How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • I would like a note box, like the current Description field, that is private to me, even on my public rides.  It would allow me to store private data in here about my ride, that I do not want visible to others (even my friends), whilst the rest of the ride is publicly visible.  And option might be to make the Description field manually switchable to make private even on a public ride rather than add another field.  This would work for me.

I have two reasons for this:

If I were working to take a segment KOM, I might put in details of how I approached that particular segment, which I didn't want others to know about. Details I've wanted to record before have been things like the speed I could safely hold round a bend/corner approaching the segment and exactly where to hit the maximum power switch.  Obviously the ride needs to be public for a KOM attempt, but the way I approached it should be my private notes.

I might also put in specific medical details, again I don't want anyone else to know about, but I want to be able to remind myself about at a later date, when reviewing a ride.  This use case came to me today as I am currently on medication and noticed my heart rate and power were much lower than normal, despite my effort level being normal (and me being well rested).  I wanted to keep private notes to remind me should I look at this ride in the future and wonder why my heart rate was so low.

  • I would like to completely block a stalker from seeing anything about me for my personal safety. However, I am trying to move on and live my life, and competing in public leaderboards is important to that effort. Could you please make it possible for me to compete in public leaderboard challenges (which requires me to make my rides visible to “everyone”) without allowing him to even see a single piece of info about me?? Even though I currently have him blocked, he can still see how many times I’ve ridden in the past four weeks and what neighborhood I have listed as my home area. (Yikes!!!) and also some other info about me. Please take women’s safety seriously!!!!!!! You’ll get a lot more women subscribers if you do. I will delete my subscription if I don’t get some ability to control what this creep sees. If you have any women in your life, talk to them about someone who has incessantly contacted them. Listen to their stories. It’s so tiresome to have blocked someone from calling, emailing, and texting you, only to have them try to friend you on Strava, the one place where you come to challenge yourself and blow off the stress from being stalked. Allow to to live my life without this POS lurking at every corner of the internet. Please!!!!!!!

  • There should be more granularity in the Flyby privacy settings. I should be able to toggle it on by default for anything tagged as a race or by activity type. I should also be able to enable or disable the flyby for an individual activity, similar to the other privacy settings.

  • Flyby Feature - When you unilaterally decided to disable the flyby feature for everyone without telling ANYONE, you destroyed the usefulness of the feature altogether.  It used to be a fun, useful tool, but now there is nobody that even knows it is still available if they would go into their settings and re-enable it.

I understand the privacy concerns, but those are already taken into account with people's privacy settings of who can see their activity.  Rather than disable the feature for everyone, enable it for everyone but only for activities that are set to "everyone".  Those people are already consenting to letting others see their activity.  Those who are concerned about others seeing their activity already have the option to limit who can see it, they don't need you to do it again for them behind the scenes.

The flyby feature is great for races as a way to see how the race progressed.  It is also good for connecting with those people who you get a glimpse of out on the trail but just didn't get a chance to say hi or recognize exactly who it was that waved at you.

Again, please re-enable the flyby feature for everyone. If you are concerned about privacy, just disable the functionality for rides not marked as "everyone".  This would maintain the usefulness of the feature while also maintaining the privacy of those who want it.

  •  - Blocked Persons -

Why can a person, which I had blocked, can see my name, pictures, kilometers of the last 3 month? I suggest that "blocked" means that that person cannot see anything of my dates on strava. I suggest that blocked persons cannot find me on strava.

  • Enable changing the activity visibility settings per activity type

Not exactly a privacy issue but rather something to de-clutter the timeline: please enable the functionality to change privacy control defaults for specific activity types.

Example: Besides running and cycling, I also like to track my walking activities. Especially because there are Strava and Garmin walking challenges that I participate in. But I would rather set my walking activity default to "visible only to me" so that it still gets counted in challenges but does not clutter up my friends' feeds.

This is not as much about hiding my activities as it is about making sure I don't spam my friends' timeline with a 2.5km dog walk. If I'd do a 20 km hike, I'd gladly enable it manually for the world to see if I felt that way.

Right now, I can only either enable or disable the visibility for all my activities combined (the Everyone - Followers - Only You found in Privacy Controls) or do it one by one (an unnecessary hassle). I would still like to share all my runs and rides by default, while hiding my walks for the sake of my friends' Strava feed purity.

  • More "Who can see" options:

Hello, while Strava has some privacy controls, it can have a lot more.

One thing I would love to be able to is to configure further who can see stuff, "Everyone", "Followers", "Only Me" is a bit too few.

I think you should look at Facebook, which both lets you configure privacy for basically every data as well as a whole lot of options in regards to how you can decide who can see it (for instance hiding/showing to specific/lists).

You should look into adding the following to "Who can see":

    • Hiding AND/OR show (rather than just show to).
    • Specific people.
    • Lists
    • Friends/followers of followers.

Privacy is important, and for some more important and even necessary than for others. Strava should be something everyone can use, even those who have more important security/privacy concerns etc. (for instance due to stalkers, violence etc).

  • The Strava Beacon feature requires you to upload your whole address book, although one probably only wants to add few contacts if at all. This requirement to upload the whole address book makes no sense and is a disproportional necessity.

I want to be able to chose one telephone number only to use the Strava Beacon feature. It would allow me to do keep my address book private and still be safe if something happens.

  • Please make the option to hide the start time of an activity to also include FOLLOWERS. It seems a simple on/off slide or radio button select option from within the activity would work. The user can have a selected default and change as needed depending on the activity.

  • A long awaited feature, listed already several times here.

I even had an interview with Strava staff 1.5 year ago about this: hide start time.

Why ? I do not like the idea to log my position on the internet, but I like segments and sharing with friends. Then the compromise to have the day and NOT the time of activities would be acceptable.

(since many years I change manually the start time of my activities using a 3rd party app to manipulate GPX files, long and tedious, and prevents me from using auto-upload features like Garmin Connect or Suunto Movescount)

  • Another vote to make Flyby feature useful again.  But I'm going to play devil's advocate here...

If the reason they disabled Flyby was for privacy and potential stalking (per article that started it) then segments must go as well.

If I pass someone out on the road and want to know who they were, all I have to do is create a segment for that area and wait an hour for the leaderboard to populate.  Then just find the recent activities for that segment and BANG I usually know where they live.

Segments must go in the name of privacy!  That or Flyby's should be made useful again.

  • I would love to select the kind of activities I share. I want followers to see runs and rides but have no need for them to see workouts and yoga. I am a full member so want to record all exercise for my training pages However don't need to share it all.

  • If I block an athlete, I should not be showing up in their “people you may know” suggestion list, especially when we have no mutual friends. I’ve also had instances where I’ve made activities viewable to my followers only, and I’ve had people who do not follow me check to see if they can see the activity, and they were able to. The fact that blocked athletes are still able to see my profile is very concerning.

  • Can you please stop giving me the "Welcome to Flyby" notice EVERY time I check flyby? I would not even have the link to flyby on my activity if I hadn't already read that stuff and purposefully went in my settings to re-enable flyby. Now I have to see that redundant notice just to check and see that yes, flyby is still mostly useless.

  • Strava has destroyed one of its own best features last year, the Fly-by, by changing it to an opt-in rather than an opt-out.  It is now a ghost town--a useless appendage.  This is what happens when nervous lawyers fearing liability are allowed to call the shots in a company.  Not a ride went by that I didn't check out the Fly-by for various reasons.  I'm truly disgusted.

  • Hi,

I would absolutely love to be able to have specific privacy settings for activity types. Perhaps you could have a "global" default, with then the ability to customize.

What this would allow me to do is to log things like walks with the kids, dog, yoga sessions, etc., without flooding my followers' feeds, while still maintaining the data. Right now, I would usually just not record those from my garmin watch because I often forget to go back in and make it private, and want my default setting to be public given that would be the most of my ride types.

    Thank you!

  • Seconding the requests to allow for finer-grained privacy controls on activities. Even if the activity itself is public, I'd like the ability to make certain things (description, location, start time, etc.) private.

  • Allow user-selected segmant Leaderboard participation without making the entire activity public

I think this is similar, if not the same as Rosemary Taylor (October 15, 2020 17:02) above, which I've upvoted. I'm just phrasing it here a different way.

I understand the privacy implications of entire activities being visible to everyone, and I choose not to allow everyone to view, but I don't see any issues with leader board participation for efforts on segments (smaller parts of an activity) that I choose, thus allowing me to be on the leader board but still keep entire activities private or for my followers. For the amount of money you are now charging for subscriptions this seems like a logical feature, since you place so much emphasis on the leaderboards. My times would but public, but nothing else about the activity would be. Obviously the segment's location would be known and it would be known that I did that segment, but only my segment time and date (not time) of effort is posted.

These boards are a quite strange way of doing this, since i can't comment on other's requests. Have you considered uservoice?

  • I want people in my club to see my activities in the club feed even if they are not my followers but I don't want everyobdy in the world to see my complete profile.

Currently for club members to see your activity you need to put your profile visibility on "everyone" but I think there should be an intermediate step between only followers and everyone in the world.

You could for example add the option "followers and club members" to the profile visibility.

  • Simple 1mile blackout of home location on all Flyby routes and this feature would no longer be a privacy issue. Another option is for users to choose what can and can not be shared in Flyby.
It's a great shame Flyby was removed and I'd loved to see it back.

I've used it multiple times to get inspiration for new routes.

  • The flyby featured has essentially been inactivated because Strava has set the default to "off" and very few people know that this is the case.

I assume that Strava did this to automatically protect people's privacy, but it is absurd that when you participate in a race and then you want to connect or see who you ran with, talked to, etc during the race you are unable to do so because so few people even know that their flyby feature has been automatically disabled.  There is little to no use of the flyby feature for people that I already follow (I already know them and knew where they were in the event); it is only useful as a tool to expand community connections.

Was abuse of the previous flyby settings really a problem?  I would suggest making the default "on" or getting rid of the feature entirely.

  • Could you expand the "blocking" features of Strava? For example, I can still see someone's kudos given and comments from someone I've blocked. And a blocked individual can still see my profile photo, a few statistics, and flybys (if they are enabled). For a "block" to be fully executable, there ideally should be no ability for the blocked individual to be seen from my feed, and the blocked individual should not have access to any of my profile information. This is for safety and mental health reasons of all parties.

  • PLEASE include the simple feature of hiding start time! I am surprised to read that this feedback was submitted to Strava already years ago - and STRAVA does not care. That is such a simple thing and in my user case it prohibits using Strava as a Work Environment CLUB plattform - because it is not OK from legal perspective that supervisors or union can see when an athlete was engaged in an activitity.

Surprised that no one at Strava gets the importance of such easy thing!

  • Make additional information visible when someone request to follow

At present if I don't recognise the name of someone who has asked to follow me then I check their profile page, but if they have their page set to private this doesn't tell me anything new.

It would be helpful to as a minimum to see what clubs they're in and their list of followers/follows, so I can understand if we have a shared connection. Ideally it would be good to be able to see their activity and full profile.  Perhaps make it visible for 24 hours to the person they've requested to follow?

  • I would like to configure the default privacy of my activities in a per activity type basis.

I use Garmin Watch and my activities are automatically published on strava via their API. I would like to share my running and cycling activities with my followers but I do not want to share my workout, training, and other activities.

The Goal is that I can continue to upload all my data to Strava without having to manually update each activity I do to set the appropriate privacy level.

I hope this is something you can add to your roadmap, I believe it will be very useful to many of us who like to track our performance on Strava but only want to share certain activities publicly.

  • I would like to submit a feature request to allow an activity to be private without the link/url.  For example, I have a friend who has concerns about a stalker and would like to share her activities with others.  Currently her options are for it to be private or public or followers.  This would allow her to keep her run private but share it with certain people via the URL.

This feature could also be helpful for professional and amateur athletes to share their "private" workouts with their coaches without making their workouts public or available to followers.

  • Why am I shown a "welcome to flyby" message every single time I look at a flyby? It is absolutely insane. It makes flybys unusable. It serves no possible purpose. It is literally the worst UI I have ever encountered.

  • I would like to see the ability to move the center of the Privacy Zone circle.  Currently all you can do is click on Regenerate, but I have not found it to work at all.  The Privacy Zone stays in the exact same location any time I've tried it, and even if it did work I do not have control over where it is placed.  Ride With GPS has a great implementation of their privacy zone.  You can see the zone in a large map and then simply click on the map to move the center.  It works perfectly and is very simple to use.

The reason I'd like to see this is so that I can move the Privacy Zone so that it doesn't overlap with some segments that are nearby.  Currently those segments won't show up on my ride because of the presence of the privacy zone.  I have to reduce the size of the zone to its smallest setting to have them show up, which defeats the purpose of having a privacy zone since there are very few houses on the street.
