Challenges

This is the post for all feedback and feature requests related to Strava Challenges.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • Please add a Run Climbing Challenge that is only 1000m

2000m can be hard to achieve if you don't run in a terrain with many hills or run very long distances. I can easily complete the 5k challenge every single day and the 10k several times each month if I want to but 2000m Run Climbing is much harder, I have to struggle a bit too hard so please add a 1000m Run Climbing Challenge.

  • Hello Connecticut C.
I understand you're interested in creating your own cycling challenge. As you may have seen, we launched a new feature on the Mobile App called Group Challenges yesterday. You can read about the new feature and find step-by-step instructions detailing how to create your own Group Challenge and invite your friends on our support article.

We would also appreciate any feedback regarding Group Challenges be posted under our Group Challenges thread to distinguish it from this one. We're very excited about this new feature and hope our athletes enjoy it.

  • Given the introduction of individual challenges, the comment by Crispin that "Due to the great demand on Challenges, we are unable to accommodate requests for self-serve, club-based, or private Challenges at this time" now seems overcome by events. However, the individual challenges are too limited in scope to work for a club (one would have to have follows for all club members, etc.). Please reconsider and add the ability to do group challenges. Thank you!

  • Hi folks.

I would like to have the possibility to create challenge on specific segment and specific timespan (example: 1st to last of August 2021) and specific club (or just list/group of people). It would allow me/us to virtually compete with each other and push ourselves even harder.

    Thanks for considering and upvoting.

  • I would like to see what the total percentage of users complete a challenge. Say the distance challenge each month. If it said something like 3% of total users completed this challenge

  • I've enjoyed taking part in challenges and it has gotten me into really good healthy habits. It would be helpful on the website to have a progress page for the challenges that shows a progression for open challenges and a summary tab for completed challenges and results. Unless you go into the individual challenge, the website doesn't have anywhere showing progression on challenges joined. The mobile app has basic progression information under the "You" menu option at the bottom of the screen. It's much easier to see on my laptop when reviewing where I stand  and comparing the progress of multiple challenges. Please create a "My Challenges" page on the website reflecting open challenges with their progress, completed challenges as well as missed challenges.

  • Jan KrejčíkThere already is a way to do that with how it is set up now.  It isn't perfect, but it works in a pinch.  If you open a segment on the web version of strava, you can use the list on the left hand side of the leaderboard to select the club or group you want to filter for.  You can then use the drop down menus at the top to further filter the results for "today", "this week", "this month", etc...  depending on what you want.  You have to be on top of it because once you go past the end of that time period, you won't be able to go back to the results from the previous time period, but you can make this work if you are on top of things.  Say you want to challenge everyone in your club to segment "xyz" from 12/1/21 to 12/31/21, all you have to do is make a post to your group telling them what the challenge is and then, when it gets to 12/31/21, sort the leaderboard as I mentioned above and you will have your results.  Maybe take a screenshot of it to save it or otherwise record the results. Again, not perfect, but it does work and we have used it for our club.

  • Hi All strava freaks,

What do you think of such results of challenges (attached) that we participate. From my point of view, strava staff should ban such cheaters. On the other hand I do not understand  the purpose of such behavior?

    All the best

  • @Andrzej Duks : Ideally, extreme "performances" such as this one would be eliminated by Strava before they even appear. If Strava could do that, then for extreme cases it doesn't really matter whether the activity recording was accidental or deliberate. In this case, I would love to know how someone recorded this accidentally! Did they fly on a hypersonic missile?

If it is deliberate, I assume that the person who posted it has edited the data in a recorded activity file, then uploaded it. IMO we can only speculate about why they did it. Trying to prove they can cheat the system? Trying to irritate people? Who knows?

What bothers me slightly more are the activity posts that are at least credible. When someone runs faster than a world record time, what does Strava do then? I am sure we all see this a lot - in most cases it seems that someone has either posted the wrong activity type, or has done a mixed session (e.g. walked 5K then run 5K and recorded it as a walk), or has forgotten to switch off the recording before they get in their car or on the bus.

A few months ago Strava said they were trying to do something about all of that, but I don't think it's particularly easy.

e.g. I see a lot of people who record cycle rides as walks. Sometimes the activity name tells me it was a ride, but the type says it's a walk. Sometimes people have even recgnised that the activity type is wrong, but say they don't know how to change it.  It would be great if the Strava software could detect more of those cases and perhaps make it really easy to change the activity type. It's the sort of thing either a good set of rules or perhaps a well-trained neural net ought to be able to do. Another thing I have seen a lot more recently is people who either have not set up their age correctly or have deliberately set it incorrectly. When I look at, say, Strava's monthly 10K run challenge *by age group* I see quite a few performances that I doubt many, if any, people in my age group could achieve. Again, I think it's probably an accident, but perhaps people like the idea of coming at the top of a list. Any list. These days, the whole business of how people "self-identify" might be a factor, too.

As for what I think of it, I would rather people just got it right. When they don't, it's not exactly a life-or-death matter but it does make it harder to use Strava to compare performances with others.

  • Bonjour,

je ne comprends pas pourquoi l'activité "raquette" no compte pas pour le challenge marche 50 km. La randonnée compte, elle.

    Hi,

I do not understand why rackets activity is not part of wlaking 50 km challenge. For instance, hiking activity is included in challenge...

  • I want to be able to create a challenge based on a route, including the number of times the route needs to be done to achieve the challenge. It will allow anyone to encourage other people in the same area to experience a route and improve their performance over time. Furthermore, more users can become aware of the route and increase their engagement.

  • In following with the request to structure the request:

I'm looking for monthly rowing challenges which are similar the standard running challenges (these are created it seems by "The Strava club".  I realize in principle these are really actually the same as individual monthly "goals", but ultimately, the same could be set for running challenges. There should be monthly challenges (100km,4 200km, 500km), there should also be individual challenges like 10k, 21097m and 42195m for a single session.

This can help people to get motivated for training efforts in the same way that running and cycling challenges helps.

Alternatively, how to we as create a club that would be able to set challenges (in the way that Strave Club does it?)

  • Why aren't there any winter sport challenges this year? I really enjoyed the February Snow Sport Challenge last year and was hoping to see more of this, not less! The only winter challenge this winter has been a Salomon nordic ski challenge that ended in mid-January before we got a decent amount of snow in Ontario. Running and riding challenges are great, but we could use a little more diversity in the sport options across the whole year!

  • Hi Peter Thomas! Thank you for your feedback on the Challenges interface and I apologize for the trouble finding your Joined Challenges. I will pass along your feedback to our Product Team. However, please keep in mind that from the Challenges page on web, you should be able to scroll throughout the page and find tiles in the gallery that show "Challenge Joined" - referencing your active or upcoming challenges. Example:

Additionally, you can also see your joined challenges from your Strava dashboard (https://www.strava.com/dashboard) on the righthand side of the page. Example:

    I hope that helps!

  • Swimming requests:  1) Can you create a function that allows a swim to be designated as a race?  This exists for running but not swimming.  2) Can you pretty pretty please give us a monthly swim distance distance challenge?  You offered this in October of 2020 and it was awesome!

Walking/hiking requests:  1) Would it be possible to include distance walked/hiked in the yearly totals as its own category? This could help distance trail runners to calculate training load more accurately in the app.  It would be so useful!

General requests:  1) The year-end summary is fantastic, but it would be so helpful if there was a static way to compare yearly totals from year to year.  2) As so many others have stated, the challenges joined by friends published to the activity feed needs to be addressed.

  • Mike Nottingham - Hi, yes I agree with you. I didn't consider that the results cannot be separated in different leaderboards. But by the way, what's the point of leaderboards in this area if I can't win anything anyway. Especially since, as is well known, there are enough frauds or fake entries that you can't rely on anyway. So I would just remove these Leaderboards from these kind of Challanges.

  • Challenges accepting only moving time is frustrating. During a mountain bike ride or ski tour it will shave significant time off of my activity even though I am not really stopping and my heartrate is still high during any brief stops (I am guessing the amt of time it takes for my gps to pick up that I am moving again is slow). The time it takes for uphill travel for these types of activities is significant. By the end of a challenge my 'elapsed time' is often more than double what Strava views as the 'moving time' that is counted towards the goal.

Strava, these sports take dedicated time and energy regardless if I am in constant motion. Additionally, having to drive 1hr+ out to mountains only to have the app tell me they are only going to count half an activity is disheartening. If I want to complete a challenge like this, I am going to have to do double the trips just to balance the unnecessary time deductions.

  • Hello, would it be possible for you not only to count the virtual rides in your own cycling challenges, but also with the ebike. Specifically, I mean the 400km a month challenge, or 50km in a row. Those are your own challenges and you can't win anything. I see that as a motivation for Ebike cyclists too. There are enough people among your subscribers who, like me, cannot travel longer distances or climb higher without an electric drive for health reasons. Unfortunately, these individuals are currently excluded from Strava challenges. You can only attend the general ones like Le Col. I think it would be good if Strava's 50 km in a row challenge and Strava's 400 km a month challenge were expanded to include the e-bike segment.

  • Update 6/21/2021: We've recently launched a Group Challenge feature which allows you to create challenges with your friends!

For more information please see: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360061360791-Group-Challenges

    ---

Due to the great demand on Challenges, we are unable to accommodate requests for self-serve, club-based, or private Challenges at this time. As of now, Challenges are only run in conjunction with Strava and are done in partnership with endemic and global brands in running or cycling.
