New post ideas

This is the place to suggest new post ideas.

As you know, we made some changes to our forum that will enable our small team to do a better job of engaging with you. One of these changes was controlling the creation of new posts and topics. If you cannot find a thread under which to post your comment, you can suggest a new post idea here.

Please make sure to 'upvote' the comments below that you'd like to see as individual topics.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • I don’t see an existing topic within the forums where my suggestion might fall, so I am adding it here.

For activities that come from an external source, I would like for there to be a way to automatically set the Activity Type and Gear based on the source. For example, when I record my activity in my Garmin bike computer, I want to use Ride as the activity type and use my road bike as the gear. If on the other hand I ride on a Peloton spin bike, I would prefer that to log as Virtual Ride (unless you can add a new “Spin” type) and set the gear to my spin bike. This would allow me to more easily track accurate mileage for each activity and more importantly, for each piece of gear. At present, I have to edit all of my Peloton activities to modify the type and gear.

  • Hey Tom Benzaia what you’re looking for isn’t available on Strava at this moment. We appreciate the suggestion. There is, however, a useful 3rd party site that does a great job with automations based on rules you create. I have one set up that assigns my trainer bike as the gear for every virtual ride I upload. Take a look and see if it helps.

  • Can we please have a post for the fitness and freshness features. I have a few improvements id like to suggest and I don't see anywhere suitable and don't want to just spam them everywhere like everyone else is doing.
    Thanks

  • SPORT SPECIFIC HRmax and HRzones

Why not include the ability to have sport specific HRmax/zones in your profile. Cycling to Running can be 10bpm difference or more, never the same. Making HR stats/analysis using your platform redundant for athletes training multiple disciplines. A 5min search of the literature supports this. Something Garmin, Suunto and others have included for years.

  • Hi, can you please make the route (to follow) you draw in the pro version lime green instead of dark blue with al little lining? All roads are blue and while cycling its really hard to see the difference.
    Much obliged, Kees

  • Enable virtual rides to be classified as 'workouts' or 'races'.

I can classify my outdoor run as a 'workout' or 'race', but when I do a workout or race on Zwift I cannot classify it as anything.

  • Apple Watch improvement

A lot of apps on the Apple Watch are using apple workouts in the background. The problem is that the Strava app doesn't allow to import those workouts that were recorded to Apple Health. They are just the same workouts with the same information recorded by apple workouts but with another "owner". It's even visible that is being recorded by an Apple Watch (in Apple Health). So it would be nice/better to be able to import those workouts too.

  • New Feature Request.
Integrate with Spotify and/or Apple Music to start with, and have a song highlight go with the picture highlight, for others to discover!
A new music button associated with the map will generate the option to allow access to your music provider of choice, pick a highlight song, and post to compliment the mood of the activity!
This can be enabled in personal settings, similar to the Weather display feature ---

Please make this happen! And once you do, gift a free 1-year membership to anyone who's submitted this idea :)

  • A lot of people want, just like Rob Fulton, more mountainbike content in Strava. Like he said, mountainbiking is an other discipline than just cycling. You mentioned a lot of reason why not to add mountainbiking to Strava because of the history rides, but within a few years there will be more mountainbikers than cycling people.  :-)
Please listen to the mountainbike community.

  • Add the option to tag 'utility' rides to help advocate for cycle-friendly cities

I would like to have the option to tag my rides as 'utility' the same way you can tag rides as 'commutes'. Commutes have all but become irrelevant as I still continue to work from home, but I now use this tag to record everyday rides (groceries, train station, school runs etc).

I think this is important because the data would help us advocate for replacing short car journeys with cycling. It also challenges the idea that cycling is only about individual performance and leisure and promotes the view that cycling can help address some major problems with city congestion, pollution etc. There is also a gendered element as women are more likely to do short 'linked' journeys and 'care' trips that may be easily cycled but feel like they are not worth recording let alone celebrating because they are neither about sports performance (training or racing) nor economic performance (commuting) - yet collectively they are likely to have a positive societal impact in many ways.

This suggestion links to older forum suggestions by Roland T to have the option to include your utility bike and by Glyn Potter to be able to track CO2 savings.

  • Hi !
A new need came to me after a few months break period and a running restart for which performance is far from previous active period.
I would then need to define a customised PR identification time frame, so that I can follow the progress inside this restart period.
Doing so will allow me to follow more specifically the seconds I gain day after day and PR I improve every day considering my ‘lower performance condition’
And perhaps, step by step, I will beat my previous PR !
That’s really more encouraging and helping to see short time frame progress, but still keeping in mind long time goal ;)
    Cheers

  • We share a lot of great photos.. some are taken for the Year challenge and they are beautiful but not so many look at it in the Blog post. Why don't randomly show them in the login page here on the web and in the App with the link at the Strava athlete who shot it?

Also.. please! An iPad, Mac universal App!!!

  • Jason Lamoreaux The three sub-boards under "Leaderboards and Achievements" are related to "Achievements", "Local Legends", and "Leaderboards". I don't think my use case of finding the maximum gradient is relevant to any of those. I knew about the "Leaderboards and Achievements" area, and to assume that I did not is to assume I am incompetent in a pretty significant way. Perhaps you should use the Principle of Charity rather than assuming someone you have never met is incompetent.

  • Further to Geoff's suggestion, many people in the running community do a warm up, then a session, then a warm down.  Often their session is 1 of n, so if they are doing 4 x 1k, you will get Warm Up, 1/4 1k, 2/4 1k, 3/4 1k, 4/4 1k, Warm down.  Hence 6 activities all with the next shortly after the previous.  Can we please have a feature that it 'rolls up' activities that happen within 30m of the previous activity, and perhaps puts a little '+' symbol next to it that you can expand if you want to review it.  I expect this would also suit the triathaletes.  It would be good to be able to name the group of activities (eg, a Triathlete may wish to name it by the event name (They would typically have 5 including transitions).

  • I would love to see the Strava UI work in landscape mode on the phone when recording an activity.
I use my iPhone as a bicycle computer in my velomobile, and mounting the phone vertically does not work due to space limitations.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Rene

  • Video for the activity

I do not know where to add the content, but I would like to be able to add videos to my activity posts. They could be restricted to a maximum of 60 seconds like Instagram.

  • Wind direction and wind speed overlay as Personalized Stats Map.

I want to be able to add the wind direction and wind speed as a Personalized Stats Map combined with any of the current available Personalized Stats Map. It will allow me to do make the impact visible on performance. The reason that it is important is because I can pick my routes better to optimize training.

  • Add Disc Golf as a sport... It's similar to hiking in that you're walking in the woods, but would be nice to be able to separate.

Disc golf is a great outdoor activity to track because it involves a GPS location, time and distance covered, and heart rate fluctuations. Many people have their phone or gps watch on while they play.

PS - ultimate frisbee would be a good sport to add too.

  • Please improve Routes - the maps feature in mobile that auto suggests routes from a certain location based on heat maps is nice for creating new routes, but Strava doesn't currently offer a good way to search for and download existing routes, such as a weekly group ride. I'd love to see a repository of routes like ride with GPS has. The ability to sort them based on popularity would be great too.
And would want to be able to filter based on total distance, surface type, and proximity to my location or a specific user-defined location.

  • Hi Brad B.! As long as your activity has power data associated with it, you will have the option to choose a power-based polyline for your activity map.

Additionally, thanks for providing feedback on ways we can improve Routes. At this time, keep in mind that you can customize the Routes being shown to you using the Maps feature. You can filter by Run, Ride, Walk and select your preferred distance, elevation, and surface type.

    I hope that helps!

  • Please allow users to upload VIDEOS to their activities, not just photos.

I'd be ok if they were limited to 10 or 30 seconds. But a short video shows way more about an experience than a photo does.

If the duration or file size is limited, also add a feature to be able to crop as part of uploading to meet the video restrictions. Don't make users pre edit / clip videos before upload

  • Allow editing of existing route names on mobile app.

Ex: I created and saved a route on mobile. Now I want to change the name of it... If I want to do this on mobile I need to delete the whole route and create it again just to change the name.

  • WAZE FOR CYCLING
A really helpful feature for cyclists (and for the quality and data of Strava's maps) would be the ability for cyclists (and other sports too potentially) to real time and after rides provide feedback on the route.
    Examples:
Surface quality: Mark a section of road as under construction, rough/potholes, or fresh paved

Traffic/drivers: some roads and parts of town tend to have more dangerous drivers than others. Part of why people like heat maps is that they allow you to ride like locals... So let's go a step further and allow you to avoid roads like locals if they're known to be dangerous, by allowing riders to tag a section of road as dangerous. (It's not enough to just go by speed limit or traffic volume. I can make plenty of counter examples, where I may feel safe on a 55mph highway, if it has a wide shoulder and very low traffic. And yet I am not safe on a local 30mph road that's got a bike lane... Because of how people drive on that road). Cyclists need the ability to help each other out with this kind of info.

There could be other tags as well: great view, protected bike lane, speed bumps, etc. All the things that affect the quality of a route or segment that are more easily collected by crowd-sourced in person reports, rather than existing map info.

The first platform to build a data layer map for cycling that can account for this type of info is going to have a huge competitive advantage. I hope it'll be Strava.

  • Strava is known for its segments and KOMs

you can compare your efforts in terms of time, but why not be able to compare by power?

as sometimes people are sat on your wheel, sometimes it is a group versus solo, sometimes wind/weather dependent

this could lead to a segment leaderboard view by power :)

you could get notifications on your ride for personnel best for power on a segment

  • Better Bike Gear and ebike management would be great, having to manually go in and select gear in this day and age is a sad pands.  Here is my idea:

Update activity type to have additional types "Road Ride" and "Mountain Bike Ride" (and the rest of the possible types of bikes.)  It should be trivial for the major players to support sending the appropriate type based on what the user selected on their watch or bike computer. I.e., Garmin profile 'Default Ride Type' has all the various bike options.

In the gear area for each type of bike, one of them would be primary (defaults to on for the first bike of that type added.)  When a ride comes in for a particular type you auto pick the primary bike for that type.

You could show that mapping to the user  (ride type on one side and gear selection on the other side for each type) so they can pick what goes to what.  This would let things like virtual rides also automatically populate the proper gear. I.e., if you use your road bike on your trainer then both "Road Ride" and "Virtual Ride" could select your road bike gear.

For ebikes, I humbly suggest you are currently not doing it in a great way right now.  You can have ebikes of any different type (mountain, road, etc) so it should be an attribute of the bike and activity and not a different ride type.  I would suggest adding a flag 'ebike' to the gear and activity.  If an activity matches a bike that is marked as ebike, then you flag the activity as an ebike ride and you don't change the ride type.

Currently I have to manually adjust every single ride to populate the fields correctly which seems a bit nuts, and certainly leads to missing flagging ebike rides, since when I'm zooming the kids around I don't tend to have the time to stop and mess with strava.
