New post ideas

This is the place to suggest new post ideas.

As you know, we made some changes to our forum that will enable our small team to do a better job of engaging with you. One of these changes was controlling the creation of new posts and topics. If you cannot find a thread under which to post your comment, you can suggest a new post idea here.

Please make sure to 'upvote' the comments below that you'd like to see as individual topics.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • Better stat tracking on equipment (especially to guide maintenance).  For my bikes, I use a mix of miles and hours to judge when I service them.  Specifically shocks on mountain bikes and adding more sealant to tires.  It would be great to implement some kind of equipment log so you knew how many hours since last shock service or how long since you last added sealant to tires.  Right now I am doing this on spreadsheets and I have thought about using the APIs to build a BI tool to help me with it, but it seems like it would be relatively easy to integrate to the product in a clean user friendly way.

  • Add Dirt Bike / Motorcycle (off road motorcycle. gas and electric motor the same.)

Hello. Long time Strava user MTB. Can you please add Dirt Bike / Motorcycle (off road motorcycle) to the use type? There are thousands of miles trails that are used for mtb and dirt bike riding here in the US. A lot of us ride these same trails for both uses. Dirt bike riding is a healthy and extremely physical legitimate(much longer trail use history than MTB) trail activity that deserves a use type. You have already created a motorized bicycle category (Ebike). Dirt bikes (combustion or electric engine) are similar trail sport machines.

  • Hi Strava Support

This is a simple suggetion I feel that should be taken into consideration and addressed.

In the comments section when you write a comment for someone, you should add a reply button to the comment so that it becomes easier for the person to address and reply to the exact same person. What this would do is, it would limit the number or the count of comments, and would exactly know for whom the comment has been replied without tagging each time.

    Hope this is considered.

    thanks a lot

    regards

    Gauri kulkarni

  • Hey John Parkin it sounds like you may have an activity with bad date/time data from 2004 that is skewing your F&F chart. You can submit a support ticket and we will gladly investigate for you.

  • I would like a way to limit the types of activities available on Apple Watch. In the past year over a dozen new activity types have been added making it much more difficult to use the watch app and find the activity I want to use. I only use a small handful of the available options so a way to either reorder them or hide ones I will never use. There now over 30 activities available and most users probably kinky use 3-5 at most. The ability to sort or re-order or even automatically reorder based on usage history. Anything g to make it less clunky on a small watch screen

  • I would like to see the analytics features expanded so that in addition to giving stats for the total activity on the overview page, or just the average and max values on the analysis page, you could see more detailed stats per lap, segment or zoom selection on the analysis timeline.

This would provide more objective and useful review of workouts to see whether improvements are being made or if certain areas should be targeted. The way you can select laps or segments on the analysis page is really good, but there are not really many useful stats there, just the graphs, max and avg values.

Please add more stats: Efficiency Factor (Power/HR) and HR Decoupling (Pw:Hr difference for each half as % of first half) as described by Joe Friel and others, Normalised Power which I think is needed to calc these stats). Maybe these additional stats would be subscriber only.

Two ways this might be implemented:

    1. add extra columns to the "laps" chart, in addition to the basic averages. This would only cover laps, not segments.

    2. A better way to show this might be to add the new stats on the analysis page so that whenever a lap or segment id selected it shows the relevant stats for that selection, same as it does currently for Max and Avg. This would be better as can cover laps and segments. Maybe create a separate section for these new stats that could be expanded as more are added. Or perhaps show the new stats on the line under the elevation chart like you do when a segment is selected currently.

  • I want the ability to see if someone has logged a strava time TODAY for any segment(particularly the starting segments) of a specific trail more easily. Maybe even a filter for showing which trails have been ridden today. It will allow me to more easily identify if the trail is open. The reason that is important is because my local trails close when there is rain and I rely on a small website where people state whether the trail is open or closed on a given day - but it often isn't updated daily. My current strategy is finding a segment on the strava map (this is difficult to find a specific trail or segment without extensive knowledge of the area - as there is an insane number of segments that show up in my map which floods my screen with segments.) I go in to a segment at the beginning of the trail and see if there have been any strava times set today. This allows me to confirm if the trail is open or not. An example of when I needed that is anytime I'm unsure whether the trail is open or closed - due to weather.

  • Using the maps Trail feature on Strava makes it easier to find specific trails I'm looking for, but when changing over to segments - it centers the map to my current location and makes it nearly impossible to find the trail I was looking at. I want to be able to swap between trail and segment tab without the map centering in on my location. It will allow me to better look at segments on specific trails. The reason that is important is because I can better plan routes. An example of when I needed that was anytime I'm looking at new trails or even existing ones.

  • I want to be able to search for trails locally, without needing to find it on the map. A search function with a specific radius will allow me to find more trails that I'm looking for. The reason that is important is because I may hear of a trail or want to find a trail that I know about without needing to find it on the map. An example of when I needed that is when I look for trails to view strava metrics.

  • I want activities logged on Apple Watch to show up in the iPhone App as a draft so I can add photos and change the title before publishing. Or at least, upon tapping “Finish”, show two buttons (“Publish” and “Edit on iPhone”).

I often don’t have time to add the photos, description, title, etc. right after an activity, or don’t have any cell service, so I’d rather be able to push it to the app and publish when I feel ready. Publishing a generic “Afternoon ride” is simply bad UX. And if someone gets notified of my activity and gives ‘Kudos’ immediately, they won’t see any of the details once they’re added, missing the point.

I end up stressing about getting all the details in as fast as possible once I do upload to make sure nobody sees it before I do. This is ridiculous imo and not how any other social media app is designed. Imagine if Facebook would just post “good afternoon” immediately every time when you click add post, and you have to edit it in order to say what you want.

  • I would like to submit a request for the addition of "<" and ">" navigation buttons to scroll to my previous and next activities.

Quite often, I am editing several activities during a single log-in, and it would be more convenient if I could edit 1 activity, and with just a single click, get to the next or previous activity and edit it. Currently I need to mouse-over "Training", then "My Activities" to bring up the entire list of activities, before clicking again on the one I wish to edit.

Garmin Connect allows me to do just what I had suggested. I find it more convenient.

  • Hi, I think it would be cool to be able to bring components out of retirement in the gear section. For example, I like to switch between my flats and my clipless pedals and would like to be able to keep track of the KMs i have done on both. The other one that would be cool is my bike supports different sized shocks and forks and was wanting to keep track of the hours ridden on both sets of suspension. One place where i think this would need revision is with third party apps such as hubtiger

  • When using the web browser page of "My Activities", instead of the current checkbox filter for commute activites, would it be possible to have a choice between:
    -All activities
    -Exclude Commute activities
    -Commute activities only

The mobile app (Strava for Android) has a similar but reverse problem where commute activities can be included (show all) or excluded (all activities but commute).
It is not possible see "Commute only" on the mobile app. A similar choice between the three mentionned above would be appreciated.

  • About hiding stats from activities

Looking at other athletes' HR, pace, power, etc. is truly useful for many users in order to learn from the effort of others, but it's something which is being hidden increasingly (specially HR).

I understand the idea behind that feature, but hiding things should have a consequence. Strava should somehow encourage users to share their stats.

Maybe hiding stats should prevent users from seeing others'?

  • As a legacy, paying user, can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go back to allowing segments under .4 miles in length (0.64 km). Many of your paying fanboys and girls are getting older and rounder but can still "compete" in shorter segments. Seeing as how you can still accurately time legacy segments under .4, it doesnt make sense why you changed the rules now. Its only going to alienate a chunk of your users and make using the app less worthwhile.

  • It would be nice if you could add the sport: Cycleball (Radball) to track the manual tiped in activity (training or Challange). Every other sport is also available.

    Thank you :-)

  • Add the option to track maintanance services.

I renew my chain every 1.500Km to avoid more expensive damages at the gear. When i have the option to track it and tipe in the next intervall for change to get an automatic genered mail, it would be very helpful.

    This is only one example!

    Tires, Break pads, etc...

  • Customized heart rate & power zones:
    1) Would it be possible to add the feature of customized heartrate zones per sport? Now you can only set 1 set of zones but this differs between for example cycling and running.
    2) Could you provide the option to manually define the 7 power zones? Now they are based on FTP but I would like to manually overwrite this based on lactate test data which is more accurate.

Garmin Connect already provides both features.

    Thanks, Augustijn

  • Respiration Rate support for Strava?

On Reddit, it says, Respiration is not supported by Strava yet:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/bz6b2c/does_respiration_rate_data_export_anywhere/

this is a pitty. I appreciate the Respiration Rate on my Fenix 6 very much. I use it for breath mediation. It is not very accurate, but still very helpful, and it can be recalibrated, as I described on my blog:

    https://petergamma.org/fenix-6-respiration-rate-calibration/

It is possible to stream data from Strava to Home Assitant. There is a GITHUB project available for this. It is highly desirable, that Strava also supports respiration rate. In Home Assistant, data can be recalibrated. Without Strava supporting respiration rate, it is useless for me personally, and I can sell my Fenix 6 with respiration rate support to another person, and buy a Vivoactive 3.

  • Would a feature be able to be added to the gear section where you can see "real" mileage and "virtual" mileage as a separate tab? Also being able to choose components that are used across both ie. no rear wheel for a direct drive trainer so it doesn't accumulate extra mileage, cassette is different so that doesn't either, etc.
Would be super helpful for maintenance as the chain isn't going to get a hammering indoors like it would on a wet, gritty road.

  • I'd like to see an 'average' line in the segment leaderboard (specifically for my results but if it's available across all the results that would be helpful too). I ride regular routes and cross the same segments frequently. It's good to see KoM and my previous best etc and sometimes I target a segment to see if I can beat my previous, someone I'm following or (less frequently) the KoM but occasionally I just want to know whether I'm improving against my previous rides.
It's possible to run an eye across all the dots representing all the segment times but if there were a line showing the average for all my attempts at the segment (potentially customisable for a time period like power profile) then I could see if I'm actually improving on the segment when I'm just riding at pace rather than gunning it for the segment.

  • Attended Activity/Event comparison

Often we meet likeminded athletes at races and events. We follow them on Strava, as one does, but then after a couple of months we may seem to forget where we met them, who they actually were and why we followed them in the first place... clogging up our feeds with 'Randoms'

A cool feature would be if we could pull up an athlete and see which events, runs or races we may have attended together. A kind of snapshot timeline or overview of what activities you attended together and when you started following each other etc.

This not only provides a reminder of who they are but could also allow us to compare progress from when we last attended an activity together, encourage friendly competition and future meetups at events.

This can also be extended to other athletes who we may still intend to follow. It would be really interesting to see if we ever attended the same event as a rising star or a sporting legend should they have visible privacy settings.

  • I want to be able to hide lap data. I use laps as event markers on my rides, as guides for reviewing my camera footage without having to watch the whole recording, usually for things like dangerous/aggressive drivers and close passes to report to traffic police. This makes them completely useless as actual lap metrics.
