Segment too short?

I noticed recently that Strava won't allow creation of segments that are "too short". While I understand the desire to reduce the quantity very short segments prone to timing issues - particularly urban segments - this is definitely not the right approach for off-road, where short segments may be very technical and slow. 100m snaking carefully around obstacles in loose or muddy terrain is very different to a flat, straight section of tarmac.

A more nuanced solution is required: perhaps one that looks at the mean or mode of the listed times and removes the segment if the value falls below a threshold.

Until then... can we please have our short segments back?

Please continue leaving your comments and votes and I'll see what we can do on our end. Sounds like we should accept short segments above a minimum percent grade.

  • I'll second that motion.....

Short segments needed for MTB & eMTB.

  • I agree! I just tried to make a segment on a very steep trail climb that takes a few minutes to complete but it's telling me the segment is too short. I'm surprised Strava still hasn't got on the bandwagon for MTB'ers. We still have no "dirt challenges", etc. Everything is geared towards the roadies.

  • Agreed! Tried to create an off-road stair climb segment for CX today. Takes 45 seconds but is only 0.1 miles long.

  • Pain in the arse strava has made itself obsolete for Mtb segments especially the tight steep short gnarly stages

  • agree - this is really annoying when setting segments on very steep ascents - not just MTB issue, but also on very steep short urban streets - please add it back!!!

  • Exactly my local trials have got new segments and no one can set a strava segment pick it up makes it pointless to even use the app anymore. Really short sighted. Most of my mates are not bothering to even use it anymore.

Was considering getting a watch and upgrading to premium but not now. Unless this can be changed I can see a lot of mtb and sprinters leaving

  • Still no sign of any changes looks like strava has definitely taken a backwards step

  • I think 200m long for +- 15% or higher will be fine.

  • Given the amount of complaints about this on the internet generally, I'm disappointed in Strava for not rectifying this yet. Even though its not a perk of Premium, if this doesn't get sorted soon I will cancel my premium account to stop supporting Strava any longer.

  • For myself and other cyclists who do a lot of hilly offroad cycling, strava has become useless to be able to make up any segments worth using. The only segments I'm allowed to make are too long for me.

Since Stava changed to this, I've found I don't go cycling to new places anymore. I like to do a few short segments during a ride so now I prefer to cycle in places where I have previously made some short segments. I've stopped going off exploring new cycling places. It has changed my cycling in a negative way..

The terrain and the ascent should be taken into account.

  • Unfortunately the utility of short segments bumps into the limits of GPS accuracy. Maybe that 45 second CX stair segment takes you 45 seconds and somebody else 30. Toss in a few seconds of uncertainty for GPS tracking (and wide variations based on phone and watch models and chip generations, sampling rates, etc) and how useful really are those comparisons, either to other athletes or your own efforts?

As is I've seen people track activities in multiple devices and then keep whichever had the better segment times!

  • Agreed, this needs to be fixed.

I create a lot of "Zwift Insider verified" segments for Zwift riders, and the new Alpe du Zwift has 21 switchbacks. Trying to create segments between each bend, but there are a few getting rejected due to length.

They may be short, but they're uphill and take at least 1-2 minutes to complete. Strava really needs to figure elevation into their metric.

  • I see the point of removing the short segments due to gps bla bla bla, but man it sucks big time on mtb. No more battling own times on downhill segments or through some technical section. Man this is such at turn of.

At least make it possible to make a private short segment to be able to log your own times and battle your self.

  • I tried to create a 100m long segment today. No joy unless I lengthened it out to just over 300m!

It averages 36% and took 4min.

Lengthened out to an acceptable distance, it only averages 19% and takes another minute.

  • Like I said in another post, if this is going to be the rule - for no longer short-segments, then Strava should delete all the older segments created prior to this change, as well as all the KOMs for those old short-segments. It's not fair that I have to compete for a KOM on a short-segment that cannot be altered because it's "too short for accuracy". Bolocks!

  • If Strava deleted all the older segments created prior to this change, as well as all the KOMs for those old short-segments, that is all I have left Fandango 68.

The fun of making up any new segments have been taken away from me and seems to have coincided with me losing interest in training.

I'm hoping to get some motivation back soon and get some rides in soon, and at least I have some old short segments that I made up years ago so that my rides are interesting.

What sense at all would there be to take away all short segments, Strava has already destroyed an excellent system and made no attempt to be fair to offroad and mtb cyclists.

I used to be exited to work out new segments on my offroad very hilly rides. I would really look forward to them. I go where hardly anyone else cycles, so my segments interfere with no one at all. For all of Strava's reasons why short segments should be stopped, I was just an innocent victim of the consequences of that decision.

Why don't they give an option to make short segments for private rides, then at least I could put my rides private and have the fun of making new segments back...

  • Please allow for shorter segments if the gradient is high. In mtb there are uphill segments thet are only 200 m or less that are technical and can take something like 2 min. Strava is then no fun! All the old sub 300 segments are still there but it really sucks not being able to create new once for climbs!

  • The fact is that Strava doesn’t care. The roadie world is big enough for them to exist without us. I’m now looking at decent alternatives and as soon as I’ve found something that ticks the boxes for me I’ll close my strava account. I’ve already cancelled my premium account.

  • Seems like it. Adding a segment category (Road or MTB) and apply different rules for min length or do exception from min length depending on segment gradient does not seem technically advanced.

I also cancelled my premium membership. Where I live there are many short MTB climbs and Strava used to make my riding there comparable with previous rides (it still does on old segments) but I am now barred from creating new segments which sucks.

  • Sorry, I lean strongly the other way on this.  I look at today's ride, a 1 hr ride on Acadia Carriage Trails, and all I see are (mostly) 1-4 mile segments.   Ridiculous-  these are sprints on a course that screams for endurance times.  My course was 54 minutes, 12.3 miles.  I want to see who can go that long, not who can sprint 3 miles.   I would love to see others' performance on the entire run- Don't give a f- that I am 54th overall on a 1 mile uphill.

  • Not sure what you mean D Alexander. You can already create whatever segment you want as long as it is longer than 300 m (0.19 miles). So if you want to check endurance on a longer segment, just create it? This thread is for the opposite. When you want to check your sprint performance on a short hill for example you cannot create a segment shorter than 300 m.

  • And you can hide segments you don't want to appear on your Strava page or device. You have the choice. With the ban on short segments, you don't have a choice.

I like (and make) long segments (up to 40km or so loops), but also use short segments a lot.

  • Hmmmm-  what I mean (and proviso that I am a new user) is that the runs here in Acadia Park are dominated by short 2-4 mile segments that Strava has accepted for public use, and therefore long segments over the same roads are now prevented from public view by Strava.  Sure I can see my own private segment, but cannot open it to competition from others-  Strava bars this.

Again, from what I understand.  Annoying as heck-  I am a competitve 60yo long distance guy-  I want to see what times others post on my 50 minute segment.

Stated another way, if I were to hide the short segments on these carriage trails, there would be no others to view.  I will double-check that tho-

  • A simple answer could be for Strava to add an option to only show segments of a certain length or distance that the user chooses.

So if you don't want short segments, then you could specify that any segment less than a time (or distance) you choose, will not be shown in the segment feed.

Same as if you only want shorter segments shown, then specify all segments to be 1 or 2 minutes length (or whatever you want to pick) to be shown and not to show any longer ones. Or you could choose to show all, short and long segments.

If Strava did it this way, there would be no need to ban anyone from making short segments.
