Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava does not include users walk/hike data to totals?

If I do a 30k walk/hike why does that not get added to total weekly/yearly distance travelled?

It forces users to list walks/hikes as runs and thus corrupts everyones overall user data. It also makes Strava's assumptions and calculations on uses personal fitness way off.

To me this is inexplicable considering every other major app does this. However, I understand there must be a reason, many people on these boards have discussed and asked for it. Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava refuse to add this?

It is the single reason I will not pay for pro.

  • I've just read through this thread and find it amazing that walking/hiking is excluded from Strava. I thought that I had not configured the software. In my summary I can see swimming, but not walking! I do outdoor activities and it's too cold in Lancashire to swim outdoors!

Strava, please can you have the courtesy of responding to either (a) let the community know that walking is not going to be included, or (b) let us know when it will be added.

I don't think that it's a simple matter of the size of the walking segment. Most runners and cyclists, especially those over 40, like to mix it up a bit and do long hikes for stamina and to break up the more intensive activities. It's therefore an overlapping activity with cycling and running, not a distinct and exclusive activity in its own right. My training stats only show about half the kilometres that I'm doing, which kind of misses the point of a piece of fitness software whose main purpose it to motivate athletes by allowing them to track their total performance, and then compare it against themselves and others.

I look forward to receiving a timely response.

PS If this thread was a timed segment, Strava, you're last!

  • There has always been something weird with the development of Strava. There are many features like this that make sense but have never been added.
Another one is being able to see a list of your best running times i.e. 1k, 1 mile, 5k, etc.. Strava already tracks the times but there’s no way to see a list of them.
I think the development team is either very small or there’s one person in charge holding them back.

  • It looks as though Strava customer services couldn't give a monkey's about what their customers want. They take your money and run. I'm going to give them another month and then jack it in.

  • After posting on this thread 7 months ago, a year after it was first posted and staying tuned as advised, I am now fed up with staying tuned and have now cancelled my subscription. Bye Bye Strava.

  • Yep, I’m done. No more premium, simply because they can’t be bothered to make 1 response. Bad business practice that’s costing them customers.

  • I would love to have hike/walk included in the totals and training log. I really don't want to have to list my hikes as runs just to get them to show up.

  • Hello.........
Why still no response from Strava? This isn’t good enough. Ignoring customer feedback is not a good business model.

  • Hi Folks,

I passed this along to our Product Managers. They're placing more attention on walkers and this community post helps them in their prioritization. Unfortunately, I don't have an ETA for when this will be implemented. Once I do have a solid update, I'll let everyone know.

  • I just canceled my premium subscription too based on the inability of Strava to fix this very simple thing. The canned form letter response we finally received after more than a year sealed the deal for me.

  • Hi Jeff. All you've done is write over the top of the previous Strava staff members message that was 18 months old. Nice work, makes it harder to see that Strava has done absolutely nothing about this for over a year while telling us, "Watch this space".

Well, we've been watching for well over a year now and nothing. Action needed before I believe Strava has any intention of making good on a 18 month or so promise.

  • The issue that puzzles me most is that the request to let a regular walk / hike count for total distance covered per month / period of time feels like a "low hanging fruit" where it comes to points of improvement.
With limited LOE, Strava could be making loads of people happy.

As a software developer, this improvement does not feel like an incredible effort to include. I mean if you can count Kms/miles in a "Run", how difficult can it be to count the same Kms/miles when the category is "Walk" or "Hike".
Unless the Strava activity model implementation is extremely weird,  I'd figure adding " OR activity_type = 'hike' OR activity_type = 'walk' in the right SQL query would get you almost there.
Anyhow, the absence of this feature is getting near to ridiculous.
I'm Glad a member of Strava reacted yesterday, let's see

  • Is this thread actually read by anyone at Strava? Or do we need to make them aware of it?!

If someone from Strava is listening, please make your presence known!

  • To anyone who has an applications development background, either solid or mediocre ones like myself, adding a separate walk/hike feature apart from the running, cycling, and swim metrics isn't really a rocket science.  For starters, this is already being offered as one of the myriad of activity types to select from when uploading one's activity.

It's just that the folks at Strava just don't want it done, for reasons only known to them.  Full stop.

This is a typical example of how an entity eventually behaves once it becomes too big, powerful, and influential.  It knows it already has the data everyone freely gave to them.  Now they can hold it hostage if it wants to and just brushes anyone aside.  Look no further than the giant social media site that keeps on entangling itself on privacy issues, but in truth is just laughing at all of us.

  • Hi Jeff, too little too late for me and I suspect many others, I cancelled my subscription and moved to another app. I still keep getting these posts emailed and will continue to read them until my subscription runs out to see if Strava ever do anything but I wasted enough money waiting over the last 2 years and won't be paying any more.

  • Unfortunately, this isn't good enough, Jeff. This thread has been going until 2017 so I'm not prepared to give anymore cash for the premium version (or whatever it's called) until the requested updates are put in place. Subscription cancelled.

  • I’m not going to go premium until this is implemented - it’s not the biggest ask to have activities for this type to be tracked in the same was as running.

The same applies for all forms of on-foot exercise, and for cycling too which has its own types.

Given how many hikers use some form of GPS tracker these days (and spend huge amounts of money on gear a lot of the time) I’m surprised that Strava haven’t prioritised this one.

  • Hi,I think i will end up cancelling my strava subscription if i do not get my walk summaries added up in monthly summary,i just cannot access it at the end of the month, when you are charging such a hefty subscription fee,ur supposed to provide access to walk summaries after that month has passed by,its not alwayss that we can go on runs, long walks are definitely better on most occasions than short runs!!!

  • BUMP Again, I just gave a +1 to every single one of the supporters of this thread, probably to no avail since Strava customer support does not appear to give a **** about what (potential) customers want.
Potential? Yes, since I'm currently on my trial month of premium, but depending on Strava's handling of the issue in this thread, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Aha, that was my thought as well when I first encountered this thread ... Long ago ...

  • This is incredible.

I just bought a Garmin watch.Their activity app/log registers all of my biking and swimming and walking heart rates - all uploads to Strava  blah blah . But I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong as the walking was not being registered as an activity on Strava in my training log. So I come to this thread.

I see 2 YEARS of complaints for a dead simple "upgrade" What are you worried about - people starting to walk? hikers using your app?

Strava is my activity "diary" and currently its doing a hopeless job given that I walk at least 3 x a week on top of 4 x Swim session and 2 x MTB Rides.

The activity tracking market is exploding - I could have bought a fit bit, polar, apple watch - whatever. You connect to all of these devices and then summarily discard Hiking and walking as a legitimate activity.

Get on with it Strava stop completely ignoring your customers.

  • Yet another request for this.  I mainly walk and cycle and dearly would love this to be reflected in my overall stats.  Going walking in the mountains next month.  Shame it wont be added to my results.   Andy   [ May 2019 - just to keep the post going!!]

  • I'm overweight. I walk and I hike. That's what I am doing until my weight allows me to run and bike. It's a shame that all activities aren't treated equally. I absolutely would be a premium subscriber if that were the case.

  • I can't believe that nobody from Strava is interested in resolving what appears to be an important and easily fixed issue. Is anyone listening? It would be nice to hear Strava' viewpoint on this matter. In the meantime, I've cancelled my subscription until it gets resolved because the statistics miss out too much of what I want to record. I'm starting to use Garmin a lot more and I find the detailed and complete information that it tracks much more useful and accessible than Strava. The social media aspect is not nearly as well covered but I'm not so worried about being King of the Mountain!

  • This is really a very poor effort Strava as a regular hiker I’m disappointed to find walks not included in your app.

Please listen to your clients !!!

or at least explain why you feel walking is not worthy of logging.
