Mark Activites as 'Commute' from the Strava app
Most of my training is done with my Garmin device, but when I want to track my commute I usually use my iPhone. A "commute" checkbox in the app would be immensely useful.

This is coming soon!
Great news, Elle!
Any chance this support will be made available to the API as well?
As Nikita and others said, a possibility to set two places (or more) as commute-addresses. Back and forth between these will tagged as commute and be hidden from view.
Why not make it a "cascade" feature with more possibilities?
If you go between two places, one or two directions, certain rules apply. Automatic text in fields, boxes ticked, gear used, set as private and so forth.
@Tord - we already do something very similar to what you describe on the back-end, for our Metro products. I agree it would be a nice feature to have available on Strava accounts. Thanks for the feedback.

Nice to see you are planning this feature.
My watch makes it very easy to record sessions and it uploads automatically to Strava from Garmin.
It can be up to 10 sessions per week. Then i check the session on my phone but i cannot change it to commute.
The main reason is that it floods the feed for everyone else with sessions that are not really interesting.
I want to log everything but two commutes a day of 7k on a bike with a average speed of 28kph...
On the other hand i still want the automatic transfer of sessions from Garmin.
Everything is tracked today.
No extra info. Just the possibility to filter it out.
In my feed it is ok but i would like to hide it or make it private for friends and followers.
16 commutes (4 days/week, 4 cycles per day - cycle/railway/cycle)
I don't want to fill the feeds of my friends/followers with the same old short commutes every day. I have tried Google Fit and other solutions. I am currently marking my rides as private but this means they do not count for much on Strava.
Better handling of commutes e.g. a commute button in the app and a commute filter in the feed.
No extra info. Just the possibility to filter it out in Feed, Training Calendar, My Activities. A stacked bar chart for the 'This Week' chart on Dashboard
User selectable filter with default remembered or in settings
4-10/week if the weather allows it.
To not spam others feeds with my commutes.
Better weather perhaps, I track them all.
I would like to see a summary of my commute mileage. co2 saved depends on what car I drive.
As is, but with the option to filter it in my feed. To filter it so u can see only commutes would help those doing commuterchallenges.
6-10 per week
Spammin my followers' feeds
I track all commutes.
Total distance, CO2 saved, avg. commutes per month/year, top list of commutes in my area, total commute distance by all athletes in my area
Visible by default, but with the option to filter.
4-14/week depending on weather.
None.
An easy "commute" tag in the iOS app. I currently have to edit every commute a second time on the web. It's a time suck.
The same as any other ride. CO2 saved, $$$ saved, vs car, YTD miles commuted would be cool but not essential.
Most important: I'd also like the option to not view people commutes like the "Include commute" checkbox in the Training Log. Less important: I'd like them to take up smaller real estate in the Feed, but I can also see that being an issue for people who use commute rides as training.
at least 10 times per week. It can go up to 20 in a busy or very social week.
None. In fact, I use strava (and bucycle) almost exclusevely for commuting.
A default option to mark my activities as "commute" or others. The way it works now it's really inefficient and of course almost nobody takes the time to do it.
The same as any other ride.
Create separate views for commuters and riders. In fact, it can be extensive to segments: it's not the same a commuter's bike record than a race bicycle doing the same segment.
10 to 12 times per week
Spamming others feeds with my commutes
If the commutes were identified automatically by the app (with the possibility of removing the commute tag if not accurate). I see several easy ways this could be implemented:
- look if the current activity name contains the word "commute"
- compare current activity with past commute activities to see if they are similar
- allow the user to define commute zones in their profile. Every ride that starts and ends in a commute zone is tagged as commute
If there were challenges dedicated to commute rides.
distance per year and total, elevation gain per year and total, avg distance, avg time, calories burned, CO2 saved, heatmap of the routes used for commuting, stats about commutes in my area
That'd be great to have the following choices:
- not showing them
- showing them them all in details
- having a weekly summary (number of rides, distance, etc.)
An athlete could define a default option for his feeds but followers should be able to override that. For example I want to see only weekly summaries from the people I follow even though they might have chosen a different option.
If I had any achievements earned during the commute, I'd still like it to appear in my follower's feeds. Otherwise I wouldn't mind a filter that just listed a weekly summary, if possible. I can imagine how such a filter could interfere with challenges. (A 200-mile commute weekly summary does not count the same as a gran fondo, for example.)
I always title mine as "Commute AM/PM mm.dd.yy" and then put the temp and wind info in the description. Couldn't you just select "Commute Ride" as the activity type instead of using tags?My runs have the "Trending faster / slower" feedback, which I think would be of some benefit to commuters also.
Heatmaps of other commuters would be great! Many people that want to commute have struggled with finding safe routes; Whereas, the veterans know the quiet streets and shortcuts that might not appear on surface-street maps.
The day has arrived. You can tag as Commute from the mobile app:
What does this button/feature actually do? Are commutes displayed differently, can I filter them away? Tagging them is one thing, how do I make use of the tag?
Great news Elle, I am so proud :-)
Looking forward to see what cool features you will implement for the segment tag!
I agree, I find it quite fiddly to have to go through each activity on through the web service, click 'change description' and then the commute tag. Would be much simpler to simply select this option at the end of a ride.
I imagine this is the same experience of the majority of commuting athletes, and if we want a more accurate picture of the training/commutes rides it needs to be made straightforward and usable.
How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?10x per week usually. I wish it would default for my specific bike. aka my commuting bike is commute automatically. My road bike is recreational primarily and I can go back and change if want to.
What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava? I have privacy zones around work and home but I still upload my ride to strava.
