Classify Segments as Road or Trail Segments

Would be nice to have a feature to determine whether a segment is on a road or trail. Could be a "surface" category: Asphalt, Gravel, Dirt or a "type" category: Road, Two-Track, Single-Track. Could also be an automatic determination based on reported bike type (90% of rides used a MTB, 9% Cross, 1% Road).

This would help with segment / route discovery.

Note: Yes, you can often tell by looking at the map... but not always. And would be nice to be able to search/filter for it in the Segment Explore feature

Note: this is different from https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21054846 which wants a filter on a segment leaderboards for bike type.

  • Wouldn't work if it was just based on bike used. So many users either don't record the bike they're using correctly or there are loads of roads used by MTBs to get to/from trails. All the options I can think of have already been discussed and nothing has changed. Strava could at least start with a simple option to mark a segment as on or off road when it is created.

  • I understand, but I still want the feature. It might "not work" for you, but for me it would. I may drastically reduce my search results, but I would be happy to occasionally search just for road bike segments.

  • This is an old request but it looks like possibly there is so work being done on it? I happened to notice "surface/undefined/" when I was looking for segments:

    https://www.strava.com/segments/explore#location/Honesdale,%20PA/type/cycling/min/3/max/5/surface/undefined/center/41.6599,-75.4472/zoom/10

I've tried changing "undefined" to different things but it doesn't seem to work quite yet. Something we might be able to see soon?

  • Thanks Elle, I've shared the Survey link with my Strava Club, 2 fb pages I admin and 2 fb groups. This will hopefully capture a good response from mountain bikers in Sydney Australia.

  • It would be helpful if segments could be classified as road, off road, or mixed.   There are places where an unpaved track (towpath) parallels a road and it is important to distinguish what surface one rode on, particularly as GPS inaccuracies could put you on the wrong segment.   That said, I wouldn't want the segment classified on the basis of a subjective percentage of what surface is present.   Naturally there will be such segments (longer ones in particular) but in such cases simply "mixed" would best cover.

Also classification of rides should be kept as a separate issue.   I may use either road or MTB on either surface.  For example there are gravel/dirt paths that I routinely ride on my road bike, and roads that I often ride on my MTB.   Just because one tool is naturally faster for a particular job is not a reason to separate KoM classifications in my view.   If I can drop the MTBers while riding my road bike along a gravel path, don't I deserve the KoM?   Also vice versa on the rougher stuff.

  • Agreed with Tony - I often ride the MTB on the road, and occasionally ride the road bike on MTB trails. I think the segment should have a type, so road segments get matched as road no matter what I'm riding, and the other way around. Definitely don't like "ride" and "MTB" being separate activity types because how do you handle a ride where someone takes the road to get to the trails, or covers some trails as part of a longer road ride? Which activity type would it be? Either way, it's a ride, so the segments should reflect. I like the break down of road, MTB, and mixed as a generic catch-all.

I've shared the link with several groups and hope you get a good response.

  • Sometimes I would like to ride a long MTB segment but I can not convert it into road or separate gpx file and ride it lately. If classification of segment as a road would help, I'll be very happy of this.

  • This would be great, also for livesegments - sometimes I'm on my roadbike and then segments i have starred for MTB (on gravel) or some for running are popping up, which I don't really want to see at this moment and I have to stop them on my garmin.

  • I would like to rate segments using the Paris-roubaix system 1 to 5 stars with 5 being very rough. Why I am making this request is that the roads where I live (Adelaide South Australia) has very variable road quality and maybe the rating could shame the local or state authorities to fix the road. It could be used as a hazard flag for pot holes etc by using 6 stars for dangerous or colour the 5 stars yellow for rough and red dangerous.
