Manually add Distance for an Indoor/Stationary Activity

When uploading indoor activities like indoor cycling or treadmill, no distance appears. Only HR. Would be useful to activate a field in wich we can type in the distance

  • Hi All,

You could try my solution below:

One of those unlucky ones who trains indoors, tracks HR with my garmin but does not have trainer who would connect with garmin device as well - so only HR and time data is available from workout.

As a sort of solution I wrote a little .vbs script that would add distance to exported .tcx files. This would make the activity look like it was performed at the same speed (distance/time) but you could have HR info in the activity as well.

    How to use it:

    1) Go to https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48009657/trying-to-write-script-to-loop-through-and-edit-tcx-xml-file and copy the last piece of code. Paste it to your text editor (ex. notepad) and save as .vbs file.

    2) Export your activity from your tracker account (ex. garmin connect) as .tcx file

    3) Run newly created .vbs file and enter full name of exported .tcx file (ex. C:\Users\YourUserName\Downloads\ExportedSample.tcx), press OK and enter distance in meters, press OK again and wait for a moment (up to 10-15 seconds).

    4) Import the file to strava and check it out!

  • People on Zwift get distance tracked for their stationary bike sessions. It makes me wonder if Strava's refusal to implement manual editing of distance is designed to encourage people to buy into Zwift.

There's no question this is NOT a technical challenge, it is a business decision.

  • Elle, instead of declining a request that seems important to the community, many of whom pay for the app/interface, why doesn't Strave put its innovation cap back on and noodle on some solutions...

Here's one, allow users to manually add mileage, but exclude the run (where GPS data isn't used) or ride from KOM/QOM results... Boom, solved it.

At the end of the day, many of us were drawn to the diary aspect of Strava... I would be shocked that the bright minds at Strava are unable to determine a viable solution.

  • I couldn’t give  💩 about KOM on Strava I simply want to be able to track ALL mileage.......

a bigger point is the is the fact that Strava doesn’t seem to be interested in addressing this issue, or even having dialogue with its customers.......

Wow, this request is about to celebrate its 4 year birthday? Surely the Strava team could figure out a way to make this happen. I'd LOVE to be able to add distance to my indoor rowing workouts.

  • In some cases when using stationary trainers, there is power data, but no speed data, and consequently no distance. Since you have the power estimation feature from speed + elevation data, it should be relatively easy to do the opposite of that, and estimate distance from power data.

I'm sure one of your programmers would love programming that.

    I would ;-)

  • With Endomondo you can add kilometers to your indoor cycling activity. I switched back to Endomondo because Strava has not done anything about this since 4 years...

  • I really hate not being able to edit the distance for a run. Looks like I'm not alone, but Strava is just ignoring us. This is why Strava is not and will never be my primary tracking location. Garmin and even MapMyRun (yes, some people still use that) are far superior.

  • I've been a premium member since 2011.  With the prolonged lack of the ability to do this simple task, which other exercise tracking logs support, I will not be renewing my premium membership.  But I suspect Strava really doesn't care, or they would have fixed this.

As others have pointed out, just don't include files with distances but no GPS in competitions.

  • Wow, just got onto Strava a couple of days ago... This lack of permissibility to manually enter meters rowed on an ergometer, or miles pedaled from a bike on a trainer, or distance from any indoor equipment that has a properly calibrated system to this tracking application is really hard to understand. Quite unfortunate for such a robust community to be asking for this simple allowance, that non-GPS tracked exercise be included alongside other metrics captured real-time, and not receive it - quite ponderous. Wow!

  • Did you notice that we just passed 4 year mark on this issue? Isn't it amazing?

Best ever showcase for customer orientation. I know what would be my reaction if I was the CEO or the PR person for Strava... Happy to hear from anyone higher in the "stack" in Strava what's this whole thing is about?

    Happy living under the rock!

Unfortunately, the only way of sending a message is to comment any activity.

  • Actually, the only effective way of truly sending a message to the cabol that runs Strava is to take your money elsewhere. It’s the ONLY language they understand. Even though Strava is cheap, it’s basically a social media platform with some crude fitness metrics thrown in for the hell of it. It’s low-grade robbery ... and given Strava’s disconnected arrogance on this and other deficiencies, they KNOW they are robbing you.

  • It seems like the issue is accountability.  Strava wants to keep distances HONEST, so you can't just change it if you feel like it was inaccurate.  I get this and respect this move.  However, we can currently add "Manual Activities" that don't "count" for challenges, etc.   I think the problem isn't "Not allowing editing of indoor activities", I think the realistic solution is improving the "Manual Activity" feature to incorporate recorded metrics.

Why can't we maybe record HR/power into an activity where the other metrics (distance, etc) are user-inputted.  Maybe allow users to MERGE a manual activity with a recorded activity tagged "indoor".  I think there are a few solutions here that don't require Strava to sacrifice the reliability of data any more than the current Manual Activity does.

  • Strava - Why can't this feature be included?  HR Data is imported with Indoor Cycling activity but you can't add distance.  You have to delete the activity and add it manually, but then you have no HR data.

  • It's crazy that one cannot add distance - makes strava no use as a training log.  Training Peaks superior.

  • Too funny...  Just signed up for TP Premium...  Will likely jettison Strava as not being able to record workout metrics makes it a tool of questionable value.

  • Great new fitness feature.  Now I get to choose whether I want to get my fitness profile from my HR data or have an accurate summary of my distance that includes all my treadmill work.  Perfect.  Not.

  • This missing feature is holding me back of buying a premium account -.-. I want to track my indoor cycling activities and be able to add distances. I don't want to participate in any challenge with my indoor cycling...

  • I’m relatively new in Premium... but will be a short-term subscriber if this feature doesn’t get resolved. When I’m traveling, I can’t always run outside, and my Peloton doesn’t fit in my suitcase... and I don’t want to choose between login HR or miles when I’m in hotel gyms. C’mon, allow for manual editing of distance, and then set an exclusion flag on those records so that they don’t count towards community records/competitions.

  • Jaap.. just cancel your subscription now like the rest of us did. This thread is 4 years old and STRAVA is not going to implement this feature.
Strava has been reduced to marketing and sales department

  • 233 comments and unresolved since January 2014 ...

During winter the bulk of my running is on treadmill; until this is fixed going back to premium subscription is out of the question.

  • Well, since I cycle on road, MTB AND Spinning I am cancelling my Premium Subscription and sticking to Garmin Connect. Strava looks good but doesn't want to respond to my full requirements. AND I'm paying for it while with GC it's FREE!!! Bye-bye...

  • "Premium was well and good, but we knew we could improve – it’s in our sports DNA"

I ask you, strava employees, not to use words that you do not understand.

The improvement is not in changing the name of the premium plan to another. Improvement includes listening to what users need.

  • Would be really helpful as these stationary activities don't do anything to affect my "fitness and freshness" which I personally track as a measurement. It makes it invalid. I can't ride trails for days at a time when it snows so I go to spin but it looks like I did nothing for days in the Strava calculations. I don't even care if it adds to my mileage

  • Jeepers.... either add it Strava or give a very plausible explanation as to why not. This seems ridiculous! We are paying for the product and we want this.

  • Please this is so basic- either add the ability to add HR data manually in manual activities or the ability to add distance to .tcx files uploaded to strava...

  • Please add this feature (manual entering distance) at least for indoor activities! I want to have all my time, hr and distance data in Strava.
