Edit Distance for an Activity

Can we please have an edit mileage feature.  I use a garmin watch when running but it often does not pick up at the start of the run, sometimes for quite some time, and therefore despite me running 10 miles, it only logs 4!!! Can we have the ability to manually edit the mileage.  And then show on the logs that mileage was edited.

It would also be good to edit the course, and plot the actual route taken to check the distance run.

Many thanks

  • When I ran my first half-marathon a few weeks ago, I was annoyed that Strava had my distance short, and I couldn't change it.

    Or *could* I?
I exported my run from Strava as a GPX file. Looking at it in NotePad, I located the longitude/latitude of the last coordinates. On a map, I extended my route the required hundred or so extra metres, and calculated the new end coordinates. Then I edited the GPX file. I tried uploading it to Strava, but it said it already had this run, so I did a search/replace on the date field making it the next day. Not ideal, but this file then worked.

  • Thanks, Ross! Not super complicated workaround, but not as straightforward as it could be. I don't understand why this just can't be fixed. Here is the customer service response I've received...

  • Ross, if you had deleted the original from Strava you would not have got the error saying it already existed and your full half marathon would have the correct date

  •  That is true Gordon. I kept it as I wanted to keep the comments on it. I was able to set the run as 'disabled' or some such thing so that the distance would not be recognised.

  • So this thread is still going and no fixes.

My advice is DON'T pay them, just use the free version.

I'm a Garmin user, so have a Garmin account, and before Garmin watches took over the world I used the desktop version of SportTracks and now the online version of SportTracks.    I still maintain both of them, though I have it set up that SportTracks is updated directly from Garmin (I know, you can do the same thing with Strava).      The upshot is, that I can edit to my heart's content, such a basic requirement.

I don't really give a toss about segments, it's meaningless data anyway and can easily be fudged, so leaderboards are not 100% accurate.

  • Would really like to see this?

when running on a treadmill my polar watch doesn't send the miles since I often do not modify it in flow to way after the event (back on my desktop).  These distances are needed to keep track of miles for shoes and weekly totals to meet my goals.

  • Strava - this lack of functionality makes you only a Social Media platform...not a training resource. We've been waiting on this feature for years...a spade is a spade.

This is one reason why I'd never utilize Strava as a legitimate training resource. The social media aspects of it make it a fun way to get and give feedback on your activities and the activities of others (and don't get me wrong - that's fantastic), but that's really all it can be until we have the option to clean up our data.

Nobody has time to go back and manually re-enter activities or jump through other hoops every time there's a snafu with the data that makes its way into Strava...especially when you're logging sometimes a dozen activities a week. It would also be a shame to go back and have to delete activities that contain comments, etc. from those who are following you.

Until this feature is added, I'll always use Garmin Connect as my training resource because my data is 100% correct. Strava will just be a fun way to interact with the athletic community, even if I have to admit that I didn't really run THAT fast in my activity titles.

  • I just finished my ride, just now.  During my ride I noticed that I forgot to start Strava about 3 miles into my sprint.  IT SURE WOULD BE NICE IF I COULD EDIT THIS ACTIVITY!  I am one of those people that couldn't care less about competing on Strava.  I am NOT trying to be KOTM.  I am trying to be KOMM though (King Of My Mountain) and I can't accurately do that if I can't go back and edit my activity when I forgot to start Strava or if Strava freaks out (happened to me in 2017 on my one and only Century ride!).

Thank you for your consideration Strava!  I do love you app, the social aspects, and such.  Nice work, except for the activity edit issue.

  • I swam indoor pool and polar haven't be able to find GPS signal so my entire workout end up over 1 hour and no distance. This is ridiculous.

  • Just ran my first 100k (Black Canyon) and my GPS has me short <.8 miles. The fact that Strava doesn't let users edit the distance is super disappointing. According to Strava technically I never finished... Thankfully Garmin lets me edit distance in cases like this.

  • I have a rowing machine and I cannot add a distance so for what ever time I have rowed I go 0 meters, Ridiculous STRAVA, and Im a SUMMIT MEMBER, would be nice if you could explain why you won't allow an edit option for overall distance, especially when a machine does not record t Strava, I have added photos to my activities for evidence!!!!!!!!

  • I think the easiest sell for Strava would be an edit feature where the distance could only be increased by a certain amount. Maybe 0.6%. This should give enough leeway without creating too many issues. I did a marathon on the weekend and it recorded on my watch as being 41.995km, or 200m short.

  • How the hell is this not a thing yet!? Requested in 2014?! When I swim indoors my watch doesn't pick up GPS. I don't want to have to export and edit the files that come from my watch every time I swim :(

  • It's truly shocking that nothing has happened since my post many months ago, nevermind since 2014. It's great that Strava is taking money, but not listening to its users. For one of the last remaining 'independent' fitness analytics/trackign apps, this is pretty poor. Net result- I finally cancelled my Summit membership and will be moving back to RunKeeper. They have had an edit function early on and their analytics is pretty decent, too.

  • I really don't understand why this basic functionality hasn't been added yet.

There are plenty of ways to address the possible issues that have been raised (cheating, etc.).

There are thousands of people out there riding indoors that have to delete their strava activity (or not upload it) - and then manually add the activity (which you then lose calories, heart rate info, etc.) just so the distance can be tracked.

I'm interesting in seeing how many miles a week / month / year I'm putting in on the cycle indoors and it's a huge pain that I can't edit my activity and just add distance.

  • Seriously! I cannot understand why this hasn't been implemented yet. This is five years of customers asking for the ability to edit the distance of an activity. I was a paying customer, but I am currently seeking a new app for tracking my runs because I have lost miles this year already and I want to be able to accurately track.

I'm skeptical they are even following this thread....

  • I run a lot on the treadmill and accordingly, I need to recalibrate the vast majority of my runs during the week. Because Strava has yet to accommodate its users on this one point (I still haven't heard a legit justification from them), the majority of my runs on Strava are inaccurate in terms of distance.

Today, I downloaded an app called Golden Cheetah (available for Windows and Mac OS).

    https://www.goldencheetah.org/

It allows you to upload the TCX file (it also takes gpx and fit files) from your garmin connect AND edit the data directly (fyi, the data is in KMs).  It's not a perfect fit, since your applicable HR and cadence, etc. will not match up directly to the distance, but I scrolled down to the very bottom and edited the final distance to at least have the correct mileage and avg pace. I exported the TCX file onto my laptop and then uploaded it directly to Strava and voila! Finally!!

This takes a lot of work, I get it, and it's totally NOT COOL that Strava hasn't fixed this yet, but for those who are slightly obsessed with getting accurate mileage on your Strava, this IS a legit fix.

    Good luck!

    "Hello everyone,

No good news to report, yet, as this feature is not planned. However, I've recently included this feature request in a report as a strong recommendation for the development team at Strava to consider. I used some quotes from this discussion as well. I'm doing my best to relay the information here to be considered. Thanks for your continued feedback and comments."

Its almost two years later, still the feature is not available. Any new news?

    Thank you,

  • Hello everyone,

That’s indeed really annoying that I can record only heart rate and total time spent while running on the treadmill or cycling indoors... I can not add total distance to the activity hence missing weekly goal...

  • Same problem here too. New user, I don't care about badges and challenges. I just want to track my own progress.

Looks like the Strava teamhas gone silent on this issue, and their biggest argument is "people could cheat their way into an achievement" ?

What about blocking the possibility of counting edited data for achievements and be done with it?

  • Hi David D.
I recommend a 2nd record of your runs, and more stats. SmashRun is good for that. Oh and importantly, you can amend TIME & DISTANCE! Join me here (free account is fine): https://smashrun.com/rossnixon/invite (see https://blog.smashrun.com/2019/11/20/we-did-it/ for latest blog about importing from other watches apps).

  • Any news on this annoying problem? I am pretty new in Strava and use it just for my own goals. Now in winter I run the threadmill. I want to register my km run at the threadmill at the same time I want to have the stats from my watch with pulse etc. I've bought subscription for Summit, but now I don't see the point if i can't edit the km on my runs. I end up registering manually but then I don't get correct data for summit for all I want to use that for. Going to end my subscription if its no fix for this problem.

  • I think this feature would be usefull for when I use strava on a treadmill. Both time and distance are not correct on strava app on my apple watch. (I use it for my heartrate)

Maybe it is possible to, after an indoor activity, that the app asks the distance from the treadmill and correct time. That way also the pace is calculated more accuratly.

  • Best thing for treadmill at least just delete the activity then re-add manually, same difference.  Athletes are interested in accurate data, if the tool doesn't support that don't use the tool.  I would always rather simply delete an activity than have something posted with the wrong data. Garmin Connect is my log of record. Hard to imagine how those folks doing business requirements here don't get it.  Imaging an accounting system for a business where once you enter the wrong information you could never correct the error.  Lame.

Note: at least you can edit comments here!  lol

  • I've been thinking of switching from Endomondo (I'm currently a premium member) .. and I just spent a good hour doing a test-run of importing my Endomondo data to Strava...  but I see a LOT of runs that came into Strava with 0 distance .. but a reasonable time.

If Strava made it possible for me to change th distance to the obvious correct number (eg. if it's a 36 min run .. that's 4 miles!) .. then I could get my data moved over and switch.

I'm grateful to see this multi-year thread... it means I won't bother to invest the time in moving the rest of my data and trying to clean it up to switch..

    Net net .. if I can't correct all these 0's ... I'm sticking with Endomondo.     :(

  • For swimming, this feature would be essential. Many of us don't have a watch that can measure indoor swimming distance, while it measures heart rate. I can set the distance in both Polar Flow and Endomondo, but not in Strava, so all my indoor swims have 0 kms. Ok, I could create a manual event, but in that case I won't have HR data, or I will have duplicated activities.

  • I just signed up for a 60-day trial subscription, but I will be cancelling unless Strava adds this feature. I have run some Ultras where my battery dies during the race. I need to be able to update the activity to show the true distance.

Here's how the feature should work, IMO:

    - you should be able to manually edit the distance, time, etc. of ANY activity

    - manually edited activities should not qualify for challenges, PRs, awards, etc. As a user, this part kinda sucks because if you covered the distance you want credit for it ... BUT I think its the only way to keep "competition" stats fair, so I think it's a worthy compromise.

Strava has said they are re-dedicating themselves to their athletes ... well, here is a test of that. Let's see if they finally deliver on this one...

    Acties voor opmerkingen Permalink
  • I think manually edited activities should still participate in challenges and PRs but with their original stats. However personal stats like the total weekly or monthly distance should reflect the edited fields.

It shouldn't be hard to do that right. Every field that can be edited should have two copies in the database - the original one and the edited one overriden by user. The edited one should be unset by default and when queried its value should default to the original one. For challenges and PRs the original fields should be used. For any personal stats, equipment mileage, etc - the user edited fields (when present). This isn't difficult to do right and in practice the amount of extra stored data would be negligible because it would be rare for years to override fields.
