Include Power data when Exporting rides from Strava

Please implement the ability to bulk export my ride data in a format the gives me back the data I put in. I own a power meter and the data I put into strava includes power data. You currently only have a function for bulk export in .gpx format which does not give me back the power meter data. You do allow export of individual files in .tcx format so obviously you can do it. If I want to give all my ride data to a coach for instance, I cannot get that info out from Strava,. This severely limits the usefulness of Strava as a training tool and will push people towards using software such as golden cheetah or Training peaks where they have full control of their data.

Sorry to hear about the frustration on this thread with the current limitations of our bulk exporter. We don't have plans to change our bulk export tool, and as many have mentioned, you can export your data individually as TCX which in most cases includes power data.

If there is a one-time situation where you would like a backup of some portion of your Activity history, I'm sure we can scrap the original files from our servers. Please submit a support ticket and we'll see what we can do.

  • Thanks for pointing this out Troy - I can definitely see where you're coming from. When I send my files to my coach I copy the original FIT files from the device before I upload to Strava. We'll take a look at our export options and see what we can do.

  • You can do this on an individual file basis: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/22555481-Exporting-your-Data-and-Bulk-Export, note the TCX export option by altering the URL.

I would love to see this featured in the bulk download as well.

  • Joe,

If you had read my suggestion you would see I mentioned the fact you can export tcx files individually.

Elle, any update on implementing this feature?

  • Totally agree with Troy. I love strava but this is one thing that is really an issue for me. We can export as .tcx but it doesn't capture the athlete's power data. For some reason the power data drops off.

  • in strava's defense, GPX only has a defined extension for cadence, but not for power (http://www8.garmin.com/xmlschemas/TrackPointExtensionv1.xsd has all the geeky details). but GPX is extensible, so strava could easily include power data, but then that wouldn't be visible to other tools, because there's no standard place to put it. unfortunately, that's how GPX is working these days, and it seems like so far, nobody ever bothered enough to create, publish, and push an extension that would cover power data as well.

  • Well, nothing says they have to choose that format for export either? They should support exporting the same formats they can import which has already been solved programmatically (since they do imports well).

  • This is a bug, bulk export should give me back all the data I sent to Strava.

  • Any movement on this?

The upload API accepts GPX containing power data, it should export too:

    http://strava.github.io/api/v3/uploads/

Strava also detects general tags placed in the <extensions> tag of each <trkpt>tag. Strava extracts:

    • cadence as cadence
    • distance as distance
    • heartrate as heartrate
    • power as power.

  • Any word on when power will be exported via .gpx? This is pretty annoying to say the least.

  • Please add this feature!  As you explain how to export a .tcx file containing all the recorded data, the code clearly exists within the Strava site - surely all you need to do is create it as an option on the bulk export page.  I agree with the other commenters to this post - the users are putting their data in, and I don't recall checking the button on a T&Cs page that said I may never be able to get the data back again.

  • Same here.  I was really disappointed to see that I couldn't export my power data in bulk.

  • Seriously. When you export from Strava, all power data is gone. And I thought I could just take all my activities from Strava into Golden Cheetah.. Useless...

  • It's silly that this hasn't been addressed yet, especially for premium members.  Like others have said, the code is there, the data is there, I can only assume my data is being held hostage at this point.

  • Strava has never advertised itself as a file storage service.   Just upload your files to a local folder when you upload to Strava.  Just like Elle.

  • So what? Strava obviously stores the data anyways when you're a premium user, why not include it in downloads?

  • Hello Guys, just add "/export_tcx" to the end of your ride, and you get the TCX File Format with including Power Data. Took my 5mins of Google ;)

URL will look like this: https://www.strava.com/activities/483975618/export_tcx and attached you see a TCX I just exported a minute ago.

  • Samuel Zürcher - You are missing the point.  This isn't about exporting a single ride as you suggest, by adding the export_tcx to the end of the url.  It's about the bulk data export.  Currently it's only available without the power information, which is what this 'feature request' is all about.  Suppose you've been using strava for 3 years with a power meter, and now you want to do further analysis with GC or some other tool.  You can't, unless you're willing to set through each activity adding export_tcx to the end of each url.  I'll excuse the wink and smile.

  • As a workaround/alternative you can use third party apps like tapiriik that will automatically sync your activities over the web APIs between Strava and various other training apps (Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, etc.). Doesn't work directly with Golden Cheetah however, probably because there's no API available.

It includes power and heart rate :)

  • I like Strava but this one missing feature is causing me to look for an alternative solution.

  • I'm also backing this feature request, my requirement is getting the bulk-exported data into Golden Cheetah. FIT or TCX bulk export would be fine, I guess.

I can see that Strava wants to promote premium accounts for advanced analysis, but those are still are long shot from what GC provides, and probably always will be.

Also, it's just common courtesy to not keep back any data that I put in.

  • Strava obviously doesn't care that this upsets a ton of people. I have found programs in the past that were able export all rides with hr/power data but can't find it again now :/
