Ability to Set Private Goals

I would like to have a "private/public" option for goals.  When I set goals I don't necessarily want anyone else to be able to see them.  Having goals is part of my training which I prefer not to share.

  • Well, its been a year since I posted this so it's time to post it again:

I'm surprised and disappointed that after four years (five?) [now six in 2020] of cajoling, coaxing and sweet-talking, Strava does not recognize the importance of this feature and still hasn't developed it.  Perhaps, it is because of difference in worldviews between Strava developers/mgrs and Strava athletes/users.

I suspect the reason Strava has not implemented this feature is that there's a fundamental difference between Strava athletes/users and Strava programmers/mgrs.  Strava developers can't understand why someone would wish to keep training goals private since they grew up at a time and competed on teams when everyone received participation trophies.  In that world, everyone is equal, no one is allowed to standout, privacy is unnecessary.  Meanwhile, Strava athletes/users were competing in REAL races where there were REAL winners and losers.  And in that world, you keep your training goals private to beat your competitor.  In the REAL world, it's results, not effort, that matter.  I imagine some Strava developers are beginning to see this as their co-workers' careers zoom ahead of their own.

However, if it is cheerleading that is needed to motivate Strava developers then as Dave A writes, "YOU CAN DO THIS STRAVA, DIG DEEP, BE MENTALLY STRONG AND KEEP BELIEVING."

PS:  It must be said that those same Strava developers have created a terrific product.  I'm just saying that perhaps they see the world differently and consequently this feature request is never prioritized and always falls below the line.

  • After 6 years of this original post and with so many people asking the same its difficult to accpet that strava will not do anything on this, specially when is a feature only for payable plans.

Strava please give more attention to the ones that really support your business.

  • I don't use goals because they are always public.  Please add the private feature.

  • Elle, the reason that 8 out of 8 of my riding group doesn’t use Goals is that they can’t be made private. Please elevate this issue for implementation in Strava.

  • +1

I would very much like my goals to be private or at least not broadcasted to everyone!!

  • Bene Joseph B. I agree with you completely. With all the ‘improvements’ they’ve made lately, this seems like easy low-hanging fruit... but they have their top programmers working on the flash stuff, perhaps.

  • So, I set my first goal on Strava now that I have been "forced" to pay as a suscriber and I see it is in my feed. I try to set as private: not possible. Then I come here and I see that this was requested 6 years ago!!! And still nothing.

    Very disappointing customer service.

  • I also would like too see private goals on here. It doesn't seem to be an unpopular request. Maybe some clarification from the developers would enable us to understand why it is not available?

  • In 2016 Strava (Elle) said this:

" I'm sorry everyone, this feature request is not planned and is not currently being considered.

We have the difficult task of prioritizing the work that can be done at Strava to build new features and functionality with our current engineering resources. Our focus at the moment is on social features. So the ability to set a private goal has not been chosen for development.

However, please do not lose hope or consider this discussion a waste of time. I report on trending topics in our community monthly, and if this topic continues to gain traction among our members then it is more likely to be considered at a future time. Thanks. "

Nothing has happened to address this in the intervening years and it is pretyy clear that nothing is going to happen. Posting here is, IMO, a total waste of time.

  • Mark Love Rui Silva Tony Gallagher Charles C. , it would be nice to hear from them, I agree.  Indeed this thread goes back to 2014 ... wow.  I haven't seen any comment from Elle so we don't know what the status is...  They haven't closed the thread to comments or tried to hide it  ... attributing it to malcontents and sweeping it under the rug.  (I have seen this at another site from a hardware manufacturer.)   Several years back there was a long-time push to get them to allow photo uploads from non-mobile devices (desktop, laptop), and the original thread was "moved" or "migrated" at least twice by "administrators" - IIRC, about once a year/18 months or so... but there were hundreds and hundreds of requests, when you counted all of them in the (IIRC) three similarly-titled threads.  Currently there are 128 comments on this thread, and I think that they finally heeded the call from desktop-computer-photo-uploads when the comments were in the 3xx range.   If you have friends/riding partners that would like to see the feature, by all means have them speak/comment up.  Our goal is to simply communicate to Strava that they are lacking a basic but essential feature - in a persistent and consistent manner. This feature would -not- drive users away, but rather encourage users to set goals and use them to improve their athletic performance.  Isn't that what Strava is about, anyway?

  • An Alternative to Live Segments

There does seem to be a Garmin Connect IQ App that could provide the same functionality as Live Segments.  It is called Xert Segment Hunter.  Unfortunately, it looks like you need a power meter to get full use out of it.  Has anyone tried it?

  • Dave Purdy It looks like Strava is not pushing for this, nad according to Derek J the more buzz we less buzz we make about this and if people dont complain, they will not put this feature as a priority. Honestly i dont understand why is so complicated for engineering to set a private goal. If it was the opposite, OK I could understand, to make something to be on feed takes more developing hours. But here we are asking for a simple solution that is to put on "mute" our goals.

What do you guys think should be the way to create more buzz and that Strava could pay attention to this matter?

  • Just gone premium for the first time, I wouldn't have bothered if I knew my goals would be plastered everywhere for all to see. I think I'll make my goals on another platform and cancel my sub.

  • Aug 14 update... Dave Purdy is right.  Crispin we're all talking about segment goals.  So I retract my "thanks."

    Crispin,

Today (Aug 12, 2020) you wrote, "Performance and progress goals are private. Other athletes on Strava will not be able to view any goals you’ve set."

Not to be unappreciative but after six years, 135 requests for it and over 200 upvotes, I think Crispin it would be more accurate to say, "As of today, performance and progress goals are private. Other athletes on Strava will not be able to view any goals you’ve set."  Otherwise, your customers might get the impression Strava is quite responsive to customer requests.

With fingers crossed, thanks for the feature.

  • Respectfully @Crispin, your second sentence is clearly and unequivocally false. “ Other athletes on Strava will not be able to view any goals you’ve set. ” The catch is —any—. Now I think I see the disconnect- there are different types of goals. I, and I believe all or most of the other commenter are speaking of “segment goals”. If I set a *goal on a segment*, then others will see that. Unless your coders have recently changed that.

  • Does the following update from yesterday  , mean Strava finally made the goals private ?

"Performance and progress goals are private. Other athletes on Strava will not be able to view any goals you’ve set.

  • I set goals on segments today and it appeared in my feed just like it has been for years.  What do I have to change in the Privacy Controls to stop goals from appearing in the Activity Feed?

  • What is truly annoying about GOALS is that they get kicked off the Garmin if you meet the GOAL.  For example, if I have a 20mph tailwind, the GOAL is easily met on that day.  The next time I sync the Garmin, the GOAL disappears from leaderboard options for the SEGMENT on the Garmin.  I have to set another GOAL in Strava for the same segment even if I want the exact same time!

    For this I pay $60 a year?

  • More testing.  I logged into Strava from my wife's free account.  I used Chrome browser on Windows 10.  The goals I set today were in her feed.  The goals do not appear in the iPhone mobile app, but I can't remember if they ever did.

  • @Crispin, your posted message dated 8/20 clarifies and does state more correctly the current situation. I appreciate your action on this and certainly we all look forward to completion of this. Thank you and please do what you can to communicate users’ desires to finish this task. We do really want it.

  • Found this thread when, like many it would seem, I was seriously surprised to see goals I'd set on sections appear in the public section of 'my' Strava.  I've no idea why such a simple and basic feature isn't made possible, or what Strava hope to gain by pissing off so many customers.

Work arounds now being considered, subscription cancellation also.

  • I recently subscribed to Strava to test it out and I can't believe that it's mandatory for my goals to be public!  If I had known that, I wouldn't have done the work to add them in the first place!  In this world of privacy-awareness it seems that Strava is taking a huge step backward.  :-/
