Import GPX files as a Strava Route

Lots of routes built on the sites, would like to import to route builder section and not recreate them all.

Please see our article for instructions on how to use the Strava Labs tool to upload a GPX file as a Strava Route.

At some future time, we are interested in incorporating this feature into the Strava site. In the meantime, our apologies if you receive an error message when trying to create the Route. It is mostly likely because Strava Routes is still in beta, and there is missing street and trail data that doesn't match the imported GPX.

    Thanks!

  • How about the ability to convert an activity into a route?

  • Was pretty shocked that neither importing or converting was supported. If Routes are going to be in any way useful then surely this needs to happen? I imagine these will get added to club/race pages in the future (or I hope so...) so please add this.

    Or at least comment?

  • Yes, definitely this feature is well needed.

  • I was going to ask why this isn't built in but looks like others already have,  fingers crossed

  • Yes, I'm also surprised that this isn't handled: I want to create a route that retraes large portions of one done by someone else, and the easiest way of doing so is evidently going to be to edit a previously existing GPX file. Please add this functionality!

  • Looks like this should be an essential feature for the next release, surely can't be that hard to do.

  • Since we've just got the feature to turn activity into a route... and you could just upload a gpx as an activity and turn it into a route...

Surely it can't be too much to add this?

But then again people have been asking for lock screen integration *forever*.

  • This would be very useful, especially when events release their routes in GPX format.

  • I was going to use Strava over some of the other apps.  Not having this feature - well it's turned me off.  I'll come back when it's possible

  • This is the one thing that makes me use a competitor to Strava for route planning and following. Please add it Strava!

  • Thanks for the feedback folks! And sorry we haven't responded to this suggestion yet.

We don't have current plans to implement this feature, but rest assured we think it's a very good idea.

In the meantime, you can still "upload" data to the Route Builder because we recently released the feature to make a Strava Activity page into a Strava Route. So, if you have a route you'd like to get into Strava, you can try uploading it as a Strava Activity first then make that Activity into a Route. Afterwards, you can delete the Strava activity if it wasn't something you completed yourself.

    Keep the feedback coming!

  • The "work around" above doesn't work well as when you get .gpx files for an event, they generally do not contain time information, only the gps co-ordinates. You then get the error "time information missing from file" when trying to load them as an activity. I'll be using mapmyrun till Strava gets their act together!

  • Yes we need this feature! Run keeper has it but that is the only things Runkeeper has that Stava doesn't! Go Stava, do it!

  • Upload a gpx without time data... come on Strava...

  • I agree with Aiden. Tried the "work around" and got the "time information missing from file" error, so can't import. Whilst I think the route feature on Strava beats the Garmin offering hands down, it would still be great if we could import the GPX/KML files that event organisers provide. It can't be that hard to do, can it?

Also, it would make doing things like hiking along the National Trails much easier, as they all provide their routes in GPX data formats for download to Garmin devices.

  • Hello everybody, hello Strava team,

I'm a recent french user of Strava and the first thing missing is import gpx itinerary !

I'm also surprise that Strava doesn't support this functionality. I already did my gpx files on openrunner and impossible to import them on strava.

And if I can add also one more thing :

I don't know in other countries if it the same thing but :

In France, when I try to build my itinary on strava, it's nearly impossible to do :

    - always strava calculate the distance during a long time even if it's a very short distance (less than 100 m !)

    - strava don't know all the roads and also don't know cycle roads (so I try to do in manual, I'll see what'll happen tomorrow on the road with that sort of itinerary)

So it's begin to be too much bad points to use strava unfortunately.

I've just begin to test strava and I fell : hard to use it to build your itinerary, impossible to import an itinerary.

To conclude, I'll test an other android application in the following weeks to see if there's a different on these 2 important points (impossible to import gpx and difficult to create itinerary)

  • i could work with the workaround except that once a activity is converted into a route then i can't edit any of the points…. which is very frustrating…. please reconsider this feature….

  • Chris - we're working on the feature to edit a Route that has been converted from an Activity page. Thanks!

  • Hi Elle, you still have not addressed the issue of not being able to import GPX data to Strava that does not contain time information. Many trail running competitions, and probably other sports as well, supply the route information as a .gpx or .kml file but it only contains the gps coordinates. We use this information not just for the race but for training different sections of the course beforehand. It seems to me to be a major oversight not to include this functionality.

  • OK, alternative method is to load you .GPX files into runkeeper, put in a duration time, and then export the data. The new GPX file will have timestamps for each track point.

  • Hi Aiden,

It is true, Strava does not accept files for upload that lack time data. I'm not sure if this will ever get changed, but (hopefully) we'll allow folks to upload files without time data to our Route Builder.

In the meantime, the workaround you suggest should work. Also the site GPSies.com has a feature to add a fake time stream to get around this.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • You can use Adze (for Mac) to rewrite timestamps data on gpx files. I easily solved the "time information missing from file" issue like that.

  • Yes, GPSies does work to get you a file with fake GPX data that will contain time for Strava to accept it, but you may need to edit the date.  Bonus to manually adding is it will also contain amount climbed where the manual entry does not contain that.  Bit fiddly but will work.
