Fitness and Freshness graph for Run activities

I, as most use Strava for running and cycling.  I don't know the actual calculation, but the tool Training Peaks allows you to map your TSS, IF and training stress balance for running.  This would be a great feature to add in to help with training for events.

Update: At this time, all activities recorded with heart rate data will now be included in your Fitness and Freshness calculations.

See our blog for an overview.

  • please implement :)

  • Would be great for triathlon training. Would also be helpful to be able to manually add a workout training load to capture swimming or other exercises
  • Awesome to see heart rate based fitness and freshness calculations now added for biking (without a power meter). As a runner and cyclist, would be amazing to see this added for running workouts too. I would see this feature being the most desirable thing to be added to Strava features to be able to use this app as a more well rounded training tool. Thanks!

  • Time to let Premium expire unfortunately. Strava is still great for the social network aspect but I've seen barely any development of Premium features over the past 18 months - certainly nothing to persuade me that it's worth keeping.

  • It's been two years. Why no updates? Why no ability to see why so many want this feature. I am a premium member and will most likely be dropping like everyone else.

  • Please implement fitness / freshness for running too, makes a good feature worthless without logging all activity.

  • With all due respect that is a BS answer.

    1. How can you claim to care about accuracy when you have estimated power for cycling (That doesn't take wind or group size into consideration)

    2. According to this your calculation is based on something that was later adopted to cycling https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918477-Fitness-and-Freshness-calculations-Premium- so it must work for other things too from before it was adopted.

    3. At least stop pretending that you are ever going to do this you have had years to do it. There is a big difference between "Not saying never" and "we hope to make this accessible to runners soon" so at least update the Strava Glossary entry for fitness to include your post.

  • I would like to see both the Running and Cycling put together in the one graph for Fitness and Freshness.  I would also like to have the ability to split them out.  I know this is not Training Peaks, but it is one of my main applications for tracking these activities.

  • I'd love to see this feature come to all logged activities based on the heart rate monitor. For the athlete that doesn't stay specific to cycling, this means the fitness and freshness graph is not a realistic representation. Since Strava appeals to multi-sport athletes this should be a priority!

I believe that other programs calculate training load based on time spent within various heart rate zones. It is essentially the same as what is used in the Strava suffer score. These calculations are very helpful for analysing training load and for peaking, and is useful for running alone (if you are just a runner), or more importantly for figuring out your cumulative load when you train in multiple sports, such as running and cycling.

It's too bad that Strava has not/does not plan to implement this, as it seems like it should be fairly straightforward (you are already doing the calculation for heart rate based cycling, wouldn't the same algorithm apply to running?), and the lack of adding this feature has led my to drop my premium Strava membership in favour of other software that provides this information.

  • I'm a runner and cyclist (actually tri but I can do with the swimming not taken into account for now although should be possible with manual activity?) and the current fitness/fatigue figures doesn't mean anything for me at this stage as it is totally skewed due to running activities not taken into account. Me too will have to cancel my strava premium membership and keep on using other software for the time being till running is added to strava fitness and freshness. My worry however is that this was suggested more than a year ago and since the freshness and fitness feature can now also use only heart rate and not just power meters, it should be simple to add running activities?

  • I've just cancelled my premium membership over this issue, as much as I love strava for everything else. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be doing so.

Not measuring it at all is surely the most inaccurate method. Why not implement with a little disclaimer? I mean everyone takes the fitness/freshness graphs with a pinch of salt anyway.

I don't want to run a marathon and have strava tell me I'm as fresh as a daisy thank you very much!

I can analyse my heart rate data directly from the TomTom app before my watch syncs with strava so there's literally nothing in premium worth paying for without this feature (even the heatmap can be generated using 3rd party tools).

  • A lot of runners supported Fitness and Freshness chart based on Heart Rate (Sufferscore) at this link:

Assuming that it would cover running and biking (or anything with a heart rate and suffer score) since the title didn't exclude runners.

Strava has improved for runners, please implement this to stay attractive.

  • Hi again,

It's been almost a year since the original request to have Fitness and Freshness capability will be available based on heart rate.  Surprisingly enough, I think this is far too long to wait.  I have purchased some software from FirstBeat Technologies and will not be renewing my Premium Strava membership going forward.

  • This is a critical feature for those of us who do than just cycling - clearly fitness and freshness are affected by all activities so using data from cycling only makes the results useless. Please at least implement this for running, which is your second major supported activity. It has been promised for a long time with no update on a planned release date - the glossary even states: "This feature is currently only available to cyclists, but we hope to make it accessible to runners soon."

Fitness & freshness is one of the main reasons many of us have a Premium membership - don't let down the members who are happy to pay for additional features!

  • Without this feature the premium membership is quite useless for runners. You should mention which features are not available for runners in the premium features list. So the people would know what the get if the buy premium ...

  • Can't believe this has been requested for so long, with no action on it - surely this is fairly straightforward to implement? I used a standalone tool, purely for Training Stress Balance, and I could ditch it if this was implemented for running in Strava...

  • Thanks for the reply Elle, but I personally think the lack of research to it is a lame excuse...We don't expect an algorithm that matches our actual fitness/fatigue exactly. There are always tons of factors that are not measurable with strava (illness, lack of sleep, ...), so it can never exactly match the reality for everyone.

But what I do not understand is that the same can be said for the cycling fitness/fatigue graph and there this does not seem to be a problem...

  • Hi,

    Can this be added please?

I was forwarded to this thread because this thread:

only covers bikers and not 'the rest of us'.

Thank you for your help and have a good day.

  • Yes please, I do triathlons so running and cycling please, oh and also the ability to add distance to treadmill running sessions...

  • shouldnt fitness freshness apply to any activity recorded with a heart rate monitor?

  • Hello,

Are there any updates on this?

  • I cannot understand how running activities with HR data is not part of the F&F graph. They have all the data, it should be very easy to implement according to me.

I do cross training so currently the graph is of absolutely no use to me. I should rather have spent my money with Trainingpeaks!!!

  • I got tired of waiting with no feedback or implementation from strava. Dropped my premium subscription and signed up for Sporttracks, which does what we want regardless of cycling, running, or swimming.

  • i signed up for premium this month. Now that i've seen that running (and swimming) is not included in the F/F chart i shall be cancelling at the end of the month. Thanks.

  • Still waiting (and still paying for Premium...) Strava. We won't wait forever!

Will be moving to basic strava + training peaks soon

  • This is pretty pathetic stuff from Strava. Leaving aside the fact it seems to be taking a ridiculous length of time to port over a feature that was written almost 2 years ago, the response on here is completely underwhelming.

My premium renewal is up next month - if there isn't any response on this, will just go back to free version, and start considering alternatives for training performance.

  • Not showing any effect from a hard run workout on the fitness/freshness at all is about as far from effective and accurate as you can get. Any impact on the graph at all would be helpful in gauging overall fitness/freshness. It could be an optional graph to use or not use...just saying.

  • I've just downgraded my Strava to free as well. Little option to vote with our feet if Strava is going to just ignore customer wishes on this. The explanation is so poor, and just going to annoy people, rather than placate them.

As others have said, anyone running is getting zero benefit from the graph now, what does it matter if it's implemented and hasn't got a wealth of research evidence to back it up (does cycling??) - it'd still be better than what we get just now.
