For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

    Hey Folks,

Our New Feature Ideas thread in the Community Forums is a place for athlete suggestions to improve Strava. We love big and small ideas. If you like someone else’s recommendation, vote on it or provide a comment of your own.

One thing to remember: just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities.

    Thanks for understanding!

  • I agree. It get quite confusing when you are using it and it does not automatically turn in your direction. Routes is a great feature, don't get me wrong. We've been waiting for this for a long time, but this seems like the logical thing to do. Get on it strava team!!

  • +1 would be great to have the map turning the way you're driving, especially in cities or complex crossings this option would be handy.

I hope you're able to implement this feature.

  • Yes, this seems like a simple function which should already exist in the maps API.  Looking forward to it's implementation.  Thanks!

  • Thanks for the feedback! Sounds reasonable to me.

  • Couldn't agree more, my brain hurts when trying to turn the map in my head, perhaps a setting to choose whether to have the map as North up, or Direction up?

  • This is almost a year old and still not implemented (as far as I'm aware) .....this would make using strava to navigate rides so much nicer. Any update???

  • I completely agree!

Strava advertises 'Ride Hard' and 'Be Safe'. What better way than to allow users to 'ride hard' AND 'be safe' by preventing users from having to fiddle with their hands on a screen to orient the map??

  • Any chance the map can remain more reliably centered on your current location as well?

My position marker has a tendancy to move off the edge of the map!

  • +1 to add this feature!

Is there an official Strava Request-A-Feature page?

  • The map on the mobile app only has a North up aerial view. What would be really useful for running using the routes, is for the track to be in track/trail up mode. This could be a toggle button in the bottom left of the map view. You can manually twist the map to achieve this but requires skill whilst running. This will help tremendously when running in unfamiliar areas which is where routes come into their own. i.e. the turn coming up is on your left without trying to work it upside down that it shows right on the screen.

  • Come on Strava FFS…get this simple feature sorted!! 'Direction Up' is offered on all other similar Apps, why not you! I refuse to upgrade to Premium if North Up is the only view, makes for very irritating navigation!!

  • C'mon Strava - what's happening with this request? First suggested back in June 2014 !

  • C'mon Strava - this frustrates me no end whenever I using the Routing function. Especially now in winter when wearing gloves and I can't access the touch screen.

How about a trail up view with the dot (i.e. where you are) staying in the centre of the screen. No thumb scrolling is then required.

    Easy? C'mon.

  • +100. This is trivial (particularly on the iPhone) to use the on-board compass sensor.

  • So, what's happening with this feature? It's an absolute must for those of us that ride in unknown places. Strava, is there an official response?

  • +1 for this. Can't count the number of times I've gone the wrong way then had to pull a u-turn in the road.

Think the map should go to normal brightness when approaching a junction or turn over 60°.

  • Hi Strava developers,
Does anyone of you reads these posts?
Make this feature finally, please, I agree with all posts above (map rotated to the direction you are facing, and centered map section while driving and zooming).
Most of other apps have this feature, but I don't want use other app than Strava.
As Matej Sustic wrote: "It's an absolute must for those of us that ride in unknown places!"
This option gives "Use route"-option fully and right meaning, not like now!

And don't push me out from Strava! (Just because lacking of this feature)

...AND GIVE US FINALLY SOME ANSWER!!!

  • It's my guess that the guys who developed Strava have moved on and just happy to cream off the profits of the Premium users, I very much doubt that they will ever address this issue and I'm bored of asking now zzzzzzz time to explore other apps out there, Strava isn't the be all and end all. I read an article in Bike Plus or Bike ETC this month, a new app with Strava functionality plus a social media side like FB which enables you to join other riders, it's brainchild of an ex pro who's name escapes me, perhaps worth a look and maybe they have a 'Direction Up' function! I think Strava is the only app that doesn't have Direction Up, am I right?

  • Strava has no clue what customer service is about.  I asked them about this over 10 days ago and all I get are replies that they are busy and will get back to me.  It takes as long to send me that BS reply as it does to actually answer the question.  Then I stumbled on this blog and it sounds like Strava doesn't care to, nor plan to, address this issue.  It's a fatal flaw for me, and I would think most users.  Strava is useless if the direction of travel will not automatically adjust.  I won't be using Strava until this is corrected.

  • Perhaps switch to CycleWe....

CycleWE Cycling Community - Plan Rides, Meet Cyclists & Track GPS by CycleWE B.V.

    https://appsto.re/gb/Dqu95.i

I saw this mentioned last month in Bike Etc and Cyclist Magazine, created by an ex pro rider. Might be worth a look if Strava don't pull their thumbs out of the asses!

I agree too, it's the same behaviour you can find in any automotive navigation system!

  • Thanks everyone - we are discussing this request and it is currently under review. That means it's been added to our backlog of projects to tackle, but I don't currently have any further updates or a timeline.
