For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • I'm new to Strava and was quite shocked to find the map will only orientate "North Up". Even more so to see how many years users have been requesting this fairly obvious feature for with no progress. Not really feeling the urge to upgrade to premium if the map facility is so basic.

  • One of the last features needed to make strava perfect. PLEASE help with this one.

  • It's quite embarrassing when you lead a group of riders off course just because you were not able to interpret which way to turn from the north only oriented map. I was thinking of going premium but would hold off and perhaps look for alternative solutions till this gets implemented.

  • Why is the map routing always based on north as top? What normal person uses it this way when following visual directions. Please change to direction of travel like every other map when actively routing.

  • Just had another comment to Strava come through on my email and wonder if STRAVA actually read these comments as STARVA don't appear to have ever replied?

    Great App.

A little tweak needed on the maps - which is standard around the world for following a map..

STRAVA support.....clearly never turn up for work or just can't be arsed...

  • As someone already wrote: most obviously never comes... Garmin sells gear that implements just this AND Strava segments. They won't jeopardize this tasty joint venture with a supreme bike/sports gear vendor just for a bunch of people complaining and threatening to cease premium membership (which in itself is a joke looking at the need for that to get live (!) speed display). Too much money to be made with all the other users still happy as it is.
Workaround already mentioned: export GPX and use that with offline capable biking/navigation apps. I use Komoot for this. Sad that I cannot have Strava segments displayed will riding but having navigation and live speed displayed at least

  • So, Strava guys, what's the deal - 5 years of requests (read: pleadings) to orient the map route in the direction of travel and no response? It would be nice to have a Strava reply to all of us in this string. What say you?

  • What is happening with this request? I will have to use another app that can actually do this. Any suggestions?

  • Perhaps switch to CycleWe....

CycleWE Cycling Community - Plan Rides, Meet Cyclists & Track GPS by CycleWE B.V.

    https://appsto.re/gb/Dqu95.i

I saw this mentioned last month in Bike Etc and Cyclist Magazine, created by an ex pro rider. Might be worth a look if Strava don't pull their thumbs out of the asses!

I agree too, it's the same behaviour you can find in any automotive navigation system!

  • Your backlog? how long is your backlog? it would seem from these posts that it was first requested in 2014....i have been on strava since then and can't see that you have done 2 years work on making strava better without this issue finally getting to the top of your list??? Used the route today and got fed up having to stop at junctions to get my head around which way the map was telling me to go. You are letting us use the route but have providing us with a product that is dangerous to use whilst cycling. A reply would be great but reading the posts below i don't think that will be anytime soon!!! Shame as generally its a great product

  • My Premium renewal is coming up and I'm not going to renew until this is fixed. I can't believe it is still unresolved.

  • Yikes, going to throw my hat into the ring and say I'm pretty annoyed that I spent ages making a route each way for my commute then come to it and it doesn't really work for navigation. This is a top priority for me in an app like this, for all the fancy features it lacks the basics… Will be going back to google maps until it's updated!

  • OK guys Strava have no interest in providing turn by turn navigation and a proper map within the app. suspect their core demographic are hard core cyclists running Garmin devices so they have no reason to fix the iPhone app. So with this in mind I have a solution!!!

    1. in strava website EXPORT the route as a GPX file.

    2. in google maps website click the top left burger and click 'your places'

    3. click on 'maps' in the tabs along the top then select CREATE MAP

now you will be in the create map screen and on this screen is a big fat IMPORT button

    4. import your GPX file, give the map a name and save it

    5. use google maps on your iOS or Droid device and your imported route will be there to use!!

  • Guys, while waiting for Strava to wake-up on this...I just figured out that Runtastic / Roadbike apps have this feature. You probably need to buy the PRO app, but no monthly fee is needed to use Routes with rotating map. BTW, the Runtastic PRO app is free for iOS now. (not the Road Bike app), but works the same.

  • This is the only feature Strava NEEDS to improve. When will it be done?

  • I'm seeing a general trend that Strava doesn't seem to care about improving basic features. Either that or they are way over their head and can't. Not looking good for them. I'm cancelling my Strava premium this app is becoming an outdated dinosaur.

  • My guess is because Strava and Garmin have a business relationship, Strava is not going to fix the map orientation in their navigation. I've accepted this and am still a happy Strava customer because of the multitude of other great app and website features. My Garmin Edge does far more than the Strava app on my phone can do anyway and with better battery life.

  • Can we get an update on this new feature reuest and where it is in the backlog please?  I have the paid for the premium package because of the beacon which works fairly well but I'm regretting the purchase now looking at how long this simple request has been outstanding.

  • Ridiculous that this feature still doesn’t exist! Another feature that people actual want put to the bottom of the pile. Stop developing pointless social features and development the functionality.

  • Fairly new Strava user. On my MTB drive today in the wood I used a route that i added earlier today. I was surprised while driving that the map wasn't oriented in driving direction and though : oh well, probably just a setting, I'll check it tonight. When checking I found this forum and I'm even more surprised now. This really should be a day-1 feature...

  • Dear Jess - this post and request must have been created about 4 years ago. It has been repeatedly requested by all on this thread. You can see how many responses there have been and when it was first proposed. Don't tell us now to go and put it into another bucket. Strava have been ignoring this for years. As a result, your customers are going elsewhere and using an App that can do trackup orientation and move with the user.

    Acties voor opmerkingen Permalink
  • @Jess, could you please at least give us the actual reason for not developing that feature?

    Acties voor opmerkingen Permalink
  • Gyus, it's a waste of time. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure that it's because they made a deal with Garmin. Strava does not implement rotating maps which makes it impossible (even dangerous) to use it for navigation, but guess who has navigation devices for cyclists? Right, it's Garmin.

Ever wondered why STRAVA Live Segments provide better functionality on Garmin devices comparing to other GPS devices e.g. Lezyne, Polar etc. including the own STRAVA app?!? Well, just think about it.

They could implement rotating maps tomorrow as it is a basic map functionality, they just need to enable it. The only reason, I can imagine, preventing this is a legally binding agreement with an other party - Garmin.

@Jess, can you please confirm or correct me if I am wrong?

    Have a safe ride all!
