For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • This is needed. I turned the wrong direction because of this (my fault I guess)...

  • This is the only feature Strava NEEDS to improve. When will it be done?

  • I'm seeing a general trend that Strava doesn't seem to care about improving basic features. Either that or they are way over their head and can't. Not looking good for them. I'm cancelling my Strava premium this app is becoming an outdated dinosaur.

  • Any idea of an alternative application that would also share the data with the "health"/"exercise" applications on iPhone ? Runtastic does not for example. Thanks for your recommendations.

  • As someone already wrote: most obviously never comes... Garmin sells gear that implements just this AND Strava segments. They won't jeopardize this tasty joint venture with a supreme bike/sports gear vendor just for a bunch of people complaining and threatening to cease premium membership (which in itself is a joke looking at the need for that to get live (!) speed display). Too much money to be made with all the other users still happy as it is.
Workaround already mentioned: export GPX and use that with offline capable biking/navigation apps. I use Komoot for this. Sad that I cannot have Strava segments displayed will riding but having navigation and live speed displayed at least

  • +1 from me. Such a basic function to have on an app like this. I'm shocked how long this post has been unresolved for.

  • Totally agree with this.  I think the only way we'll get Strava to listen is to review the app on App Store - suggest we all do this

  • It's apparent that Strava don't actually care about what a large number of their customers would like, looks like an excellent & time-tested way of losing them. I'm heading off too, gonna stick with the Garmin.

  • This is also a function in my humble opinion that an app like this should not be without. I find it basically impossible to follow direction when riding on a pre-planned route. Please Strava add this to make this a truly "complete" app.

  • This is my second and final post on this.  To all of us who have been waiting and expecting Strava to offer this feature, I think we need to move on.  I share your frustration and am baffled at why this wouldn't be a no brainer.  It's an essential function, a deal breaker.  However, this post has been going on for years and Strava, obviously, doesn't care.  They are not going to offer it and don't care if they lose customers in the process.  I have moved on.  I purchased a Garmin and it does exactly what I need it to do and Garmin is a fabulous company that understands customer service.  No, I'm not a Garmin employee or paid by Garmin.  I just feel passionately about supporting good companies and dumping those that don't care, like Strava.  I suggest everyone dump Strava and get a Garmin or some other company's GPS device that will do what you want it to do because Strava does not care and will not address this issue.

    Thanks and good luck.

  • I agree with you Brian. Stephan P. previously suggest " Runtastic / Roadbike" I am going that route as well. I just cannot use Strava the way it is.

  • This is such a shame. I have used various applications for capturing fitness workout and was starting to fix on using Strava (getting ready to pay for Premium). But having a basic feature like heads up display not available, and ignoring the community of users - leads me to think that they do not value their customers / community / supporters.

Like others, I find it confusing when cycling to mentally transpose left and right when following a route the wrong way on my phone.

Will be looking to go back to another app.

  • It's crazy that you expect people cycling in traffic to have to stare at the screen trying to work out if the next turn is a left or right..

  • [UP]

How is this taking 4 years to be done?

I developed iOS apps before and changing the map to be oriented with the heading is probably 5 lines of code.

  • My guess is because Strava and Garmin have a business relationship, Strava is not going to fix the map orientation in their navigation. I've accepted this and am still a happy Strava customer because of the multitude of other great app and website features. My Garmin Edge does far more than the Strava app on my phone can do anyway and with better battery life.

  • Actually I have given up on this but there is good news for Garmin watch wearers! There is a Mapping App available called Dynamic Watch (from the IQ Store) or here -> http://dynamic.watch/me

I have been using this for a while and whilst basic it gives me enough to follow a route (4 levels of zoom) and statistics too. At last I don't have to use my phone and Strava app for routing!

I am not sure if this works on the cycle Edge range but it works for running and on my watch Garmin 235.

    regards

    Dave

  • Is there another app which would accept a route link and then navigate it with rotation? Run Strava in the background then.

Also is it true this feature works with a paid premium account?

  • Hey,

as far as I know it does not work with premium on STRAVA. I moved to RideWithGPS for navigation and using STRAVA as a community page only to connect with friends.

    Really disappointing.

  • Just a shame that such a wonderfull app is not able to create a route map which will orientate the map in the direction you're moving. It is too dangerous when cycling while navigating using this map function of Strava...

I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpfull.

Ps. don’t bother buying premium, still doesn’t work there...

I have to export my gpx files to a different app (bikeGPX works wonderfull btw). Just to make use of such a simple feature.

Shame on you Strava. Because this has been requested for many many years (first request was from 2014🙁). You should monitor your own forums and listen to your OWN users. If you don’t listen to them, why even bother keeping up a forum...

    Hope you bother reading this.
