For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • Can we get an update on this new feature reuest and where it is in the backlog please?  I have the paid for the premium package because of the beacon which works fairly well but I'm regretting the purchase now looking at how long this simple request has been outstanding.

  • Ridiculous that this feature still doesn’t exist! Another feature that people actual want put to the bottom of the pile. Stop developing pointless social features and development the functionality.

  • What is the ETA on the "Map Orientation" resolution (so the map is oriented in the direction being travelled)?  This have been an open issue for 4 years or so....can you give us a date when it will be available?

  • If I‘d had known about this problem beforehand I wouldn’t have bought the premium version, Runtastic has it in all of its App‘s Komoot has it, TomTom, Garmin etc. all have it as Standard and yet Strava can’t even be bothered to answer a question on the issue in its own support forum? You should be ashamed! I for one will not be renewing if this problem is not solved!

  • Please Adrian, tell me how Runtastic has it?

I have Runtastic Pro and when using routes it DOES NOT rotate the map, it just travels along, keeping north up.

  • Hi Erik, it’s not about Runtastic! it‘s about why Strava doesn’t have it, it is now also about Stravas Customer Support not even bothering to answer a question in the Strava Support Forum after over 2 years,

You are obviously doing something wrong with your Runtastic Pro, ;-) I am Running the newest version of the App on an iPhone 6. If you look at the bottom of your full size map on your phone (see fotos) The left one is for POI‘s, the middle one for „North“ etc. the right one for the different types of maps.

and if you still have problems, the Runtastic support is fairly quick (24 hrs.)

    have a nice weekend ;-)

This does indeed rotate the map as you move. At least on my flavor of android. The caveat is not being able to save a route offline unless using the paid version which is less than $40/yr.

The browser based route creator feels more user friendly too. I already felt more efficient making a route in this interface. Honestly I think all of it feels more user friendly. It might have some bugs. It's not going to be perfect. But it shows the feature being implemented and offered on a similar freemium platform.

  • Thanks Adrian!

Unfortunately the Android apps don't have the arrow at the bottom, but a location pin that doesn't have the same function.

    Regards, Erik

  • Fairly new Strava user. On my MTB drive today in the wood I used a route that i added earlier today. I was surprised while driving that the map wasn't oriented in driving direction and though : oh well, probably just a setting, I'll check it tonight. When checking I found this forum and I'm even more surprised now. This really should be a day-1 feature...

Any update on this simple request? Not only is this basic functionality, it is also a fundemental issue of safety for users of Strava!

I agree with other users, this has been open for several years, and seems to have been forgotten. Shame. Why do Strava value social media functionality over the safety of their ever expanding user base....

  • This map rotation function is necessary when driving in unfamiliar terrain while using the route saved in the Strava. Please Strava make it possible!!

  • Hi Jess,

Thanks for this official Strava comment: “Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities. Thanks for understanding!“

What you probably mean: while a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable we only implement those ideas which our users are probably going to pay extra for. This way we can make even more money out of this app. Thanks for paying for all these useless “social” features.

  • Just got this from Jess at Strava: Our New Feature Ideas thread in the Community Forums is a place for athlete suggestions to improve Strava. We love big and small ideas. If you like someone else’s recommendation, vote on it or provide a comment of your own.

One thing to remember: just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities.

    Thanks for understanding!

I do not understand! A feature that every other App that is similar to Strava has, even in free versions! A feature that is also safety orientated, a feature that Users want and need, a feature that was asked sbout over 2 years ago and didn’t even rate an answer, that above is no answer it’s just a regurgitated standard answer that comes with the company’s computer.

  • Dear Jess - this post and request must have been created about 4 years ago. It has been repeatedly requested by all on this thread. You can see how many responses there have been and when it was first proposed. Don't tell us now to go and put it into another bucket. Strava have been ignoring this for years. As a result, your customers are going elsewhere and using an App that can do trackup orientation and move with the user.

  • @Jess, could you please at least give us the actual reason for not developing that feature?

  • @Chevalier P.
Because they need to be selectieve and balance their priorities, what a joke.

I use this app for navigation: BikeGPX. Easy to upload gpx files and simple to use. Because they probably do care about a good user experience...

  • Gyus, it's a waste of time. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure that it's because they made a deal with Garmin. Strava does not implement rotating maps which makes it impossible (even dangerous) to use it for navigation, but guess who has navigation devices for cyclists? Right, it's Garmin.

Ever wondered why STRAVA Live Segments provide better functionality on Garmin devices comparing to other GPS devices e.g. Lezyne, Polar etc. including the own STRAVA app?!? Well, just think about it.

They could implement rotating maps tomorrow as it is a basic map functionality, they just need to enable it. The only reason, I can imagine, preventing this is a legally binding agreement with an other party - Garmin.

@Jess, can you please confirm or correct me if I am wrong?

    Have a safe ride all!

Please understand that we are not asking you to implement everything. We are asking you to prioritise a simple but important safety feature available in almost every other competitor app requested over 4 years ago as you can see via this thread.

Please listen to your user base and not the £££ related to useless social media functionality...

  • Very strange Strava doesn't include the rotation of the map in their app. No way you can easily ride a route if you have to concentrate all the time where to you need to turn. Also being able to see your current speed and distance driven seems a minimum info to get.

  • Coming to the end of 2018 and this is still an issue! After recreating a popular sportive on Strava’s Route creator because I couldn’t upload the file from ride with gps. I gave up halfway because the damn thing wouldn’t face the direction I was heading. Basic issue back in 2014, still a basic issue now.

  • Well, I suppose it has to do with money. Such a simple feature with popular requests wouldn’t get stuck on the backlog if it wasn’t the case. And I don’t mean the money required for developing it. It’s a actually very simple.
Guess Strava shows everyone they are not willing to invest in licensing of a feature or amending contracts that restrict them from doing so in order to “just” come up with a feature that is considered bread and butter, which would thus not create any more commercial value for them.
Just to say it here, I’d be more inclined to spend money on an actual useful feature like this than the “nice to have” one they are currently trying to sell.

  • I’m adding my dismay at the lack of this basic functionality. I recently moved from MapMyRide (which has this function) to Strava. This is so basic.
I may just go back to MapMyRide.

There’s been zero feedback on this. Perhaps Strava don’t care?

  • @Barry: go back to MapMyRide mate, Strava doesn’t give a shit what you think, they don’t care for your safety, as long as you pays yer money they couldn’t give a damn!!!!

  • I'm pretty sure, that Strava don't care about basics - this tread started 5 years ago. They care more about summits because it is a money.
