For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • So, what's happening? It's been weeks, months and years. The navigation is useless without the map navigates the direction you are facing. Are you seriously not seeing this?

Your product is awesome. But resting on this moment now will make you lose. So do something, especially things that customers need/demand.

  • Guys, this should be simple, at least it is obvious! We from premium strava need that!

  • I've spend hours looking how to enable this feature in the ios app. I could not even imagine is does not exist !

    Everybody needs this.

What are you waiting for, Strava ?

  • Only just started cycling and used strava for a route to a friends house. Great took to set the route up. I've used mapmyrun before for routes and expected it to work the same. Nope. Because I couldn't move the map while riding I lost my way and ended up going 5 miles out of my way. Needs orientation, centre of screen. Currently not as good as map my run- I will probably swap back

  • Couldn't agree more - absolutely needed feature. Route planning and importing of GPX data is THE thing. But why there is no auto map orientation is to be questioned. It's a major thing that is lacking here. I do not want to use komoot all the time for trail navigation with Strava running invisibly in the background. That is not how it was meant to be and certainly a reason for questioning why I should continue using Strava premium live tracking it if I do not see it on a ride because I have to have another app opened while cycling

  • Google My Maps does not provide navigation for imported tracks.
You can follow the route on the map if you have an internet connection during your ride but there would not be navigation guidance.
You may want to search for a dedicated app that may have that functionality.

  • Odd how strava are quick to shut down the multiple threads on this topic but not so quick in actually providing any sort of update.....

Simple feature, really should be part of base map function - any idea when this will be added or should we all simply go else where...

  • Please add this feature.  It's the one thing that forces me onto other apps.

  • Just speculating, but I wonder if the lack of urgency is related to the Strava-Garmin relationship. Seeing how smartphones really put a damper on car GPS device sales, the same thing is a threat to bike GPS devices. If the Strava app had decent navigation, I probably wouldn't have been in a hurry to get a Garmin Edge unit. So, I'd bet Garmin is happy to keep Strava compatible, but not comparable.

  • Guys, I am following this thread since exactly 1 year and still waiting for this feature to be implemented. In fact, this is the only reason I am not paying for premium as I have to pay for "Ride with GPS" to have this feature.

I suggest, we bomb this thread to the top by posting follow-ups. Ask your friends to do the same.

    Cheers

  • I am also using Strava for 1 week now and was confused there was no option to navigate properly.

Currently I am free premium but can not imagine signing in afterwards without this feature.

  • Hi Strava - what's the update on this lack of feature. Navigation on the mobile would be so useful in unfamiliar places. Heads up view, real time tracking and turn instructions. Google can do it - why can't you? thanks David.

  • Been using Strava for just over a month, without this feature I just can't see that I'd continue to use or recommend it. Its just such a basic feature that other navigation apps do. Such a simple fix letting done on what it otherwise a good app. Basics first guys then your features can shine....

  • I agree with you Brian. Stephan P. previously suggest " Runtastic / Roadbike" I am going that route as well. I just cannot use Strava the way it is.

  • Actually I have given up on this but there is good news for Garmin watch wearers! There is a Mapping App available called Dynamic Watch (from the IQ Store) or here -> http://dynamic.watch/me

I have been using this for a while and whilst basic it gives me enough to follow a route (4 levels of zoom) and statistics too. At last I don't have to use my phone and Strava app for routing!

I am not sure if this works on the cycle Edge range but it works for running and on my watch Garmin 235.

    regards

    Dave

  • Is there another app which would accept a route link and then navigate it with rotation? Run Strava in the background then.

Also is it true this feature works with a paid premium account?

  • Desparately looking for an app that does this. Probably not added because Google asks money for this functionality with their API. Most apps like Runtastic etc. don't offer this.

  • Runtastic definitely hava the functionality. I am using Mountainbike and Roadbike and often use the function.

  • What is the ETA on the "Map Orientation" resolution (so the map is oriented in the direction being travelled)?  This have been an open issue for 4 years or so....can you give us a date when it will be available?

  • Please Adrian, tell me how Runtastic has it?

I have Runtastic Pro and when using routes it DOES NOT rotate the map, it just travels along, keeping north up.

  • Hi Erik, it’s not about Runtastic! it‘s about why Strava doesn’t have it, it is now also about Stravas Customer Support not even bothering to answer a question in the Strava Support Forum after over 2 years,

You are obviously doing something wrong with your Runtastic Pro, ;-) I am Running the newest version of the App on an iPhone 6. If you look at the bottom of your full size map on your phone (see fotos) The left one is for POI‘s, the middle one for „North“ etc. the right one for the different types of maps.

and if you still have problems, the Runtastic support is fairly quick (24 hrs.)

This does indeed rotate the map as you move. At least on my flavor of android. The caveat is not being able to save a route offline unless using the paid version which is less than $40/yr.

The browser based route creator feels more user friendly too. I already felt more efficient making a route in this interface. Honestly I think all of it feels more user friendly. It might have some bugs. It's not going to be perfect. But it shows the feature being implemented and offered on a similar freemium platform.

  • Thanks Adrian!

Unfortunately the Android apps don't have the arrow at the bottom, but a location pin that doesn't have the same function.

Any update on this simple request? Not only is this basic functionality, it is also a fundemental issue of safety for users of Strava!

I agree with other users, this has been open for several years, and seems to have been forgotten. Shame. Why do Strava value social media functionality over the safety of their ever expanding user base....
