For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • I hope they will do it soon. I use numerous maps before and all had this as standard future. I was so surprised that Strava did not offer this option.

  • It’s a feature that isn’t difficult to implement. I think that’s Strava option not to, for some reason that I don’t understand.

Please consider this request. Or you aren’t capable of?

    Thanks

  • I'm glad I found this thread. Having become a bit lost in France this week on a long ride, for me, I initially couldn't figure out exactly where I was until I realised that the map was upside down. I resorted to Google maps to put me right.

Now, here I am having been considering the upgrade to Summit today but this map issue has put me right off.

I will probably simply run Strava in the background from now on. Shame on the developers!!!

  • The lack of this, and the recent withdrawal of support for Relive, have made me and a number of my fellow peddalers turn to other solutions for a biking app.

Sorry Strava, you were great but you’ve lost it.
    If you snooze, you lose.

  • Hello Strava Team,

I am a summit Member, I left the Runtastic app to come to Strava and I am very sad about this functionality is not in Strava app.

I think it is a nice system when you don't know the area where you ride. I am sure you will have more users with those functions, many persons hesitate to ride without a guiding.

I don't know what is the tech is being in this function but could you study and give to us some road map?

  • I wanted this in 2016. It is still not there, so I will need to use Trailforks for the map, and run Strava in the background to capture my heart rate data and wheel sensor, as TrailForks doesn't do those things. Sad I have to run two apps.

  • North up is great for planning. Track up is a necessity for navigation. Not having a track up option is a dealbreaker for me.

  • So, Strava guys, what's the deal - 5 years of requests (read: pleadings) to orient the map route in the direction of travel and no response? It would be nice to have a Strava reply to all of us in this string. What say you?

  • Oke while waiting for Strava to get the basics right, can anyone recommend a good app to use while riding for navigation? I will still use Strava in the background but navigating with it is horrible, because of this very small feature. Please bump this up in your backlog, thanks :)

  • Hi Wouter, I was using RideWithGPS on my phone for couple of years. The navigation feature is not for free, but you won't find a better app out there. Now I am using a Garmin Edge device, but I am still with RideWithGPS to create routes with CUEs

  • Come on guys, nearly 6 years since the initial request and still no automatic map rotation.

I won't renew my summit until this has been added, this is so basic for an app that's supposed to track activities.

  • I’ve just signed up to a free trial of Summit, but this has really put me off, it’s simply to much of a distraction when riding... Such a shame 😔

  • Anyone see the new feature?? Now you can sort your feed by "chronological" order. Like... Uh... How was it sorted before? And if I 'miss a friend's activity' because of having tooI many events come through the feed, well, that's the busy world we live in isn't it? I think everyone still following this thread should start a new feature request with this same title and link back to this one to gain a bunch of visibility.

Has anyone confirmed that the orientation feature works in paid app usage, or is it a flaw in both modes?

  • Just downloaded this app as I’m new to the world of bike riding and created several local rides which I planned to test prior to paying for the subscription. Loved the app but hate the map orientation which looks like it won’t be resolved due to politics with Garmin. Wish I’d have known about the orientation problem prior to spending hours creating routes as my 2 trips resulted in me spending too much time trying to figure out which way to go rather than focusing on the potential dangers of road travel. Good bye Strava but this app is way too dangerous for a new rider!

  • Tried Summit free trial with routes . Great feature but without map rotating to direction of travel it is too dangerous to use for navigation. Have cancelled subscription but may well return if and when implemented.

  • I'm. Summit member at the moment, on the free trial. It doesn't work for me either. I'm really surprised by this because it sort of makes Strava a social media app. Maybe Strava is trying to be the Facebook of training, but that's not what I want. I want an app that's useful for training and tracking, so now I'm looking into whether Garmin or anyone else offers a better package. I susoe t I'll find that they do.

  • let’s face it - from all the comments i’ve read and for all the years it’s been requested there is only one conclusion.
Strava don’t care have never cared and will NEVER be implementing turn by turn navigation.
Frustrating i know because it’s a feature on just about everything else out there and given it’s Strava a hugely well known app beggars belief.
it stops me from going premium and anybody who pays for it is helping to fund a group of people who given their zero response to this must just be sitting there laughing as yet another post about it appears.
so stop asking for it! - ITS NEVER COMING

  • I don't think they know how to do it. We'll have to wait for someone from Google to defect to Strava. In the meantime, I'm discontinuing premium.

  • Hello
regarding the route orientation, Cyclometer does it perfectly... I don't think it takes 10 years of R&D to do it in an app, more half a day for an average dev guy... so, it must be a strategy, but which one ?  so disappointing...

  • From the mail we received, the strategy is clear: $$$

If the map would orient in the direction of travel I might put up the cash, for now, too bad I don't care about segment leaderboards and the people on  top of it.

  • I find it strange that whatever fault on any subject you find with strava. All the support forums like this have complaints going back years all asking for improvements on the given subject, but nothing ever improves, your comments are requests are falling on deaf eyes. They simply aren't interested in anything we comment about. its simply  put up and shut up mentality. I have tried contacting them through customer support and I am sure the emails are not even read by a person, judging by the stock replies I get on any subject. They basically read Piss off we are not interested in what you have to say, in a corporate response. I have stopped my re newel to summit due to this lack of customer care.

Now with the new launch of updates they had the golden opportunity to improve and implement are improvements and recommendations, but surprise surprise we get crap that hardly anyone whats but you have to pay for it now.  Its all about money and nothing to do with the subscribers.

  • Please switch to point to driving direction. Its so dangerous when riding and having to keep looking down and figuring out where the next turn is going to be with traffic passing by. Also how to I enable audio so that it tells me when the next turn is etc...

  • The fact they haven't done it when so many users have been asking for it for so long, and it sounds like a relatively easy feature to implement, makes me think there is some kind of commercial anti-compete tie-up with Garmin or something that is preventing them from doing it.  If this is the case they need to be transparent about it, particularly when the founders are making comments about putting the subscribers at the core of the business, clearly these are empty words.

  • OK - now that you have made the promise that a subscription will fund improvements this has to be a test case to show your willingness to deliver on what the community is asking for. Please make this happen - it will really improve the rides and show us that you do care for your customer base and not just for revenue.

  • So it turns out the Suunto app that I started using after getting one of their watches allows you to create and follow a route AND it nicely turns the map in the direction of travel. It also allows you to sync your stuff to Strava.

You don't need one of their watches to use it I guess...

  • Ok so it's 2020 and I'm reading all these comments from YEARS ago asking for this feature. So glad STRAVA gave me the first two months free. As soon as I found out that the map will not orientate to the direction of travel I cancelled my premium membership. MapMyRide works great.
