For mobile Routes, Orient the map in the direction you're moving

The new routes feature is great now that it is view able from the iphone, but it would be really nice if the map rotated to the direction you are facing. I don't care about turn by turn directions, but using a directional, centered map sections of roads where you need to make a lot of turns would be very helpful. This would be great it I could open it occasionally while its mounted to my stem.

  • Very strange Strava doesn't include the rotation of the map in their app. No way you can easily ride a route if you have to concentrate all the time where to you need to turn. Also being able to see your current speed and distance driven seems a minimum info to get.

  • Coming to the end of 2018 and this is still an issue! After recreating a popular sportive on Strava’s Route creator because I couldn’t upload the file from ride with gps. I gave up halfway because the damn thing wouldn’t face the direction I was heading. Basic issue back in 2014, still a basic issue now.

  • Well, I suppose it has to do with money. Such a simple feature with popular requests wouldn’t get stuck on the backlog if it wasn’t the case. And I don’t mean the money required for developing it. It’s a actually very simple.
Guess Strava shows everyone they are not willing to invest in licensing of a feature or amending contracts that restrict them from doing so in order to “just” come up with a feature that is considered bread and butter, which would thus not create any more commercial value for them.
Just to say it here, I’d be more inclined to spend money on an actual useful feature like this than the “nice to have” one they are currently trying to sell.

  • I’m adding my dismay at the lack of this basic functionality. I recently moved from MapMyRide (which has this function) to Strava. This is so basic.
I may just go back to MapMyRide.

There’s been zero feedback on this. Perhaps Strava don’t care?

  • @Barry: go back to MapMyRide mate, Strava doesn’t give a shit what you think, they don’t care for your safety, as long as you pays yer money they couldn’t give a damn!!!!

  • I'm glad I found this thread. Having become a bit lost in France this week on a long ride, for me, I initially couldn't figure out exactly where I was until I realised that the map was upside down. I resorted to Google maps to put me right.

Now, here I am having been considering the upgrade to Summit today but this map issue has put me right off.

I will probably simply run Strava in the background from now on. Shame on the developers!!!

  • The lack of this, and the recent withdrawal of support for Relive, have made me and a number of my fellow peddalers turn to other solutions for a biking app.

Sorry Strava, you were great but you’ve lost it.
    If you snooze, you lose.

  • Hello Strava Team,

I am a summit Member, I left the Runtastic app to come to Strava and I am very sad about this functionality is not in Strava app.

I think it is a nice system when you don't know the area where you ride. I am sure you will have more users with those functions, many persons hesitate to ride without a guiding.

I don't know what is the tech is being in this function but could you study and give to us some road map?

  • Oke while waiting for Strava to get the basics right, can anyone recommend a good app to use while riding for navigation? I will still use Strava in the background but navigating with it is horrible, because of this very small feature. Please bump this up in your backlog, thanks :)

  • Hi Wouter, I was using RideWithGPS on my phone for couple of years. The navigation feature is not for free, but you won't find a better app out there. Now I am using a Garmin Edge device, but I am still with RideWithGPS to create routes with CUEs

  • Any idea of an alternative application that would also share the data with the "health"/"exercise" applications on iPhone ? Runtastic does not for example. Thanks for your recommendations.

  • @Adrian, @David, and @Ruud - I hear your frustrations, but please understand that we cannot implement everything, while we would love to.
