Allow me to tag Runs as 'with baby jogger'

NB if you do want this feature added, please click the "upvote" so that the people at Strava will be able to judge its relevance!

So, I recently started using Strava.

These days, my time to run coincides with the time that I take care of Tisa, our 10-month old daughter. Luckily, ever since we have purchased a jogging stroller these two things are possible to combine. To a certain extent at least.

While I really enjoy running with the 'jogger', it is not exactly the same as running. Of course. You're pushing a stroller, you can't really use your arms, or run at full stride. Likewise, running with a jogger makes you less 'agile', so crossing streets, or moving onto and off the sidewalks causes your speed to drop to zero. And I may be working my butt off pushing the jogger up even a slight hill, but still I will not be able to match the speed of the person who just started running last month. Naturally, this is reflected in speed, and therefore, my ego starts to complain.

I think adding 'run with baby jogger' as an activity on Strava could be welcome for people like me. For three reasons (from least to most important):

  1. it will do some justification as to why my splits are twice as slow as they used to be.
  2. it will allow me to compare my times against other 'baby joggers', somewhat like the age groups.
  3. it will let me explore where other 'baby joggers' go for their workouts, allowing me to discover new routes that are baby-jogger-friendly.

I realize the demand for this feature could be very small. But who knows, perhaps you have already received more of these requests. And I could imagine it would be relatively easy to incorporate into the Strava platform.

That's it.

With kind regards, Maarten

    Hi Everyone!
Thanks for continuing to add your comments and concerns. As Elle said earlier, we don't have plans on adding this feature in the near future.

  • I'd like to heartily second this request - even just adding a function to add the stroller as "gear" would be great. I'm also a new strava user and new mom of a 6-month old.

(I'd also love to see "trail run" and "hybrid run" (for runs that cover both pavement and trail) added to the sub-categories.)

    Thanks so much!

  • Greetings Strava,

Having recently become a new father myself, I think that it would be a great idea to allow for an activity label of "Stroller" or something similar so that the many running parents can properly catalogue their workouts.  Maarten raises some excellent points with regards to the need for it, and I might further stress that stroller jogging/walking has become a major lifestyle element for athletes and their families over the past several years.  Our Thursday run groups at the local running store consist of four different stroller jogger couples, and I know that we'd all love to be able to label this type of specific activity.  Anyone will tell you that this form of exercise is a complete departure from normal running and having the ability to track times, splits, or just the mileage covered would be a bonus.

This is certainly an ever growing group of people, athletes, and parents; so I think it would make sense to give some serious consideration to adding it to the Strava world.

    Thanks!

    -Duncan

  • I absolutely agree; among my friends there are numerous runners with babyjoggers, including the submitter of this request. Looking forward to such an feature,

  • I also agree that this is a much desired addition!! I'm tired of hearing all of my baby daddy/mommy friends complain about not being able to get any KOMs/QOMs anymore because they have to run with a heavy stroller. They seem really depressed because of this and like life has lost much of its meaning. Then when they PR their stroller 10k and it doesn't get recorded as a PR they go ballistic. Therefore, stroller features really are needed for the safety of the children and mental stability of the parents. Furthermore, if this feature doesn't get added, I just might never be convinced to have kids myself, which would be a huge detriment to the human race. As a bonus, it would also be really amazing to have a stroller adjusted pace. That way I can more handedly dismiss the assertions that they WOULD HAVE BEEN faster than me had it not been for the stroller. But please, at a minimum, allow these poor people the ability to differentiate between stroller and non-stroller runs, and compare like efforts. Yea Strava!!

    Sincerely,

    Mr. Babcock

  • This is a great idea.

I don't have any kids, but if I did, I would like the ability to separate my regular run versus stroller run efforts on segments. Also, many people use Strava as helpful way to get an estimate for how long it will take them to do a certain activity, if they have a certain amount of time available. By adding the stroller option, this capability of Strava is further enhanced.

I'd like to second Mr. Babcock's idea of a stroller-adjusted pace. It's a great idea, and would be easy to implement but satisfy a lot of strava-ers with kids.

I don't think there should be any KOMs though. Seems dangerous, and like the satisfaction of being able to PR something with your stroller would be enough motivation. Save the KOMs for once the babies are hobbling around, strap a Garmin to them and then add "wobble" as another activity option.

This also works to Strava's advantage because by keeping athletic, Strava-using parents of small children happy with the product, it's reasonable to assume the kids may eventually grow up to be avid Strava-users themselves.

Adding "stroller" as a gear option is certainly easier, but I don't think it's as helpful. Come on, there's a kitesurfing activity type (I use that when I do corn mazes). Please expand Strava's user base and usefulness horizons by adding a stroller run activity type.

    Thanks!

    Tony

  • This is a much needed feature. Adding a "with baby stroller" button to both runs and bike rides would be a good. Both activities are much different with pushing a stroller or with a stroller trailer.

  • Yup, they're definitely slow and in our way, but people pushing baby strollers have rights, too.  :)

Give those hard-workin' folk the button they need!  Thanks!

  • As a father of a year and a half I whole-heartedly support this requested addition to the list of Strava activities.  Pushing a jogger, pulling a pulk, a bike trailer or any other form of dragging your kiddo along on amazing runs or rides is a completely different game than just hauling your own carcass all over creation.  Make this a reality--and let us add the jogger to our list of equipment and include the child's weight.  I plan on competing in some races over the next year in the "chariot" category, and if races can include separate registration and ranking, then Strava should be able to as well.

  • I think adding a stroller activity is a great idea to keep parents motivated to exercise with their kids and see their results in a better light.

  • Thank you to all of you supporting us Parents which aim to stay in shape and have the kids enjoy the 'fast' ride. I have much more of a technical suggesting due to some recent experience. We have just upgraded my Wife's phone from Samsung Galaxy S3 to a Iphone 5s and are struggling with all the fancy features. We are one of those runners who do not enjoy strapping anything to our arms. So, we place the phone on the stroller. With the Samsung phone we had no issues at all.

With the Iphone we are loosing our activities. Sometimes, it doesnt start recording at all, some others, it records partially. I guess our arm swinging is not sufficient. It would be nice for the 'with stroller' bottom to automatically disable all this fancy instruments and leave it to the old good GPS been continuously switched on.

We are to the point that we cant take it anymore and planning to return the iphone and get a new 'old' samsung Galaxy S3 or 4.

Now, we just have to open a strava account for our Baby and start challenging other Babies on their 'stroller stats' so they can too brag to each other.

  • @Pedro:  I had those same GPS problems with the iPhone (mine was a 4, but still). It would lose GPS signal in the middle of an activity, and only occasionally pick it back up later, only to make my ride/run totally unrecognizable. But from what I can gather, it's a known iPhone issue, not a Strava problem. So I would check these out:

    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/22672524-Troubleshooting-iPhone-GPS-issues

    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/22533685-Strava-iPhone-app-and-new-iOS-7-settings

I don't have any kids, so to go strapless, I ended up buying a Garmin watch. For $100, the Garmin 10 has been totally worth it, and the battery lasts 4-5 hours.

Alternatively, you could use the old Samsung phone as a GPS only, even if it has no cell/data service, then upload via WiFi. Those features ought to still work on a deactivated smartphone.

  • In the same way that Strava reports the Grade Adjusted Pace, how cool would it be to have a Stroller Adjusted Pace, which includes a calculation based on the weight of your passengers? Should be do-able once people start submitting data and comparisons can be made. And all commenters, please click the "Me too" at the top so that someone at Strava will notice this thread.

  • Any progress on this? I'm running with a stroller now, and would like to be able to add the weight of the stroller + child to my workout, as it would have a huge impact on calories burned. Also, I expect to get a cycle trailer for him at some point, and would like to be able to add that to bike rides to get an adjusted power output.

  • Unfortunately, it seems we just have to wait for our particular demographic to grow more visible before Strava will be ready to recognize our needs. A different strategy would be to barricade the entrance to the Strava headquarters with baby joggers.

C'mon Strava, you would make us so happy!  And that for minimal effort!

NB, thanks Mike for pointing out that above all we need "Me Too!'s". I will edit my original post to include this.

  • In addition to stroller, it would be great to specify whether it is a single or a double, I slow down a LOT when I am pushing two kids (one who is almost 40lb) compared to just my little one.

  • Great addition to our community space. Thanks for sharing all your comments and votes. Interestingly, this concept has previously been proposed by parents who work at Strava.

With our large backlog of other features we're developing, I think it's a little unlikely this project will be prioritized this year. However, all your comments and votes help.

  • Awesome idea!  I would love to see a "baby stroller adjusted pace" similar to grade adjusted pace on strava.  I'm not the fastest dude but one of my goals is to someday AG pushing a baby stroller haha :D

  • Absolutely agree. Such functionality would also have the benefit of allowing us to see aggregate distance run with our dear ones, separate from overall aggregate distance.

Doesn't only apply to running either. I also have a Thule Chariot that hooks onto the back of the bike. That too sure slows things down!

  • I whole heartedly support this feature request. I currently have to add a description to my rides to know when I rode with my two boys in tow and without it. It would be awesome to have a tag and easily compare these different ride sessions.

  • Yes please! Being able to filter and only see trends etc for with/without on a certain route would be great too. I was well pleased when I did a hilly 10k with my double buggy under the hour, but it doesn't really show up amongst the other buggyless runs.
