Ability to export Training log to Excel or delimited file

I like tracking my activity in Excel and producing graphs, etc.  Being able to export the training log to Excel or CSV file would be beneficial for my analysis.  At the very least offer a button that screen where you can print the log so I can enter the data into Excel.

However, exporting the data would be awesome.....

  • They don't seem to understand that it is OUR DATA.

They also limit what other non-Strava people see when you share rides as well - why can't I let my wife see the details of my workouts if I want to share that information.  Best I can do is a screen shot cut n paste.  Again, it is MY DATA.

Garmin Connect is a better app, just not as "social".

And FWIW I've mentioned this to them numerous times, including in the early days when they used to ask for user input.  Maybe it is rocket science - to them.

  • I use Veloviewer to overcome this limitation in Strava. It is great for doing detailed stats, year over year comparisons, etc. It can import all of your Strava data and show you things Strava can't.

  • Patrick S thank you.  that veloviewer (even free) looks like it will work for me.  Mike

  • Veloviewer looks promising, though it's massive overkill for basic functionality that should already be built into Strava.

  • Yep, still wanted...

Pretty sure we're all looking forward to a time when an app does all the things Strava is good at while filling in all their gaps in service.

  • I have just posted same question.  Given pretty limited analytical capability of Strava it is really important to enable bulk export of data  to Excel to enable personal analysis.  It really shouldn't be difficult!!    These questions seem to go back years?  What is Strava doing?

  • This would be a really useful feature that shouldn't be too hard to implement. These requests seem to go back years.

  • I agree with the original poster. I work with data in Excel on a regular basis as part of my job and would LOVE to be able to analyze my ride data in a similar manner.

    Thanks!

  • I have also been frustrated for some time by the lack of export functionality in Strava. So I've played around with the API and created a web app that let's you bulk export all your activities as a CSV file. You can check it out here:

Let me know how it works for you.

  • Thanks Terry, glad to hear that.

I've updated it now so that it downloads distances in miles or km depending on your Strava settings.

  • Very nice!  The first time I tried, I did not have Strava open and when it tried to access my profile it threw an error in Italian (Sessione scaduta. Effettua nuovamente l'accesso).  I opened Strave and tried again and it worked beautifully!  Thank you Martin!

  • Worked a treat and well done. Why strava couldn't have managed this themselves is beyond me, but awesome that you have done it. Mega Kudos my friend.

  • Hi Martin, Fantastic!  I was looking into the API when I stumbled on your post.  A superset of what I was looking to do.  Thanks, Steve W.

  • Thanks for your feedback Mike, Joshua, Jim and Jimbo, glad to hear it's useful! I'll try to find some time to make the app look and feel nicer now that I know it's being used.

  • Hi Martin - I noticed that you have kjoules but not calories.  I can't seem to convert kjoules to calories that matches what Strava has.  Would it be possible to include calories in a future release?  Thanks for all of your work on this.

  • Hi Folks,

Thanks for adding your comments. I understand the need for having all your data easily accessible and downloadable. I'll pass your thoughts along.

One thing to remember: just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities.

    Thanks for understanding!

  • Hello Jim. I actually export all fields that are available through the API, and calories don't seem to be part of that set unfortunately. So not much I can do I'm afraid.

  • Hi folks,

I had the same desire and some spare time, paired with interest in playing with the Strava API, so I coded an activity list Excel report generator.

    • All available data fields of the activity list are exported
    • Some more values are calculated (prefix x_).
    • Name your favorite start/end gps locations for easier filtering in Excel
    • I found it convenient  to use a second Excel sheet containing charts and a link to the tool-generated and frequently replaced data-Excel
    • Bulk modify of activity meta data like name, description, commute-flag and privacy-flag is also available.
    • Feel free to try it here: https://entorb.net/strava/

As I have a strong concern in privacy and security I decided to delete all temporary data and disconnect my app from your Strava account automatically.

Interestingly I stumbled across the calories issues as well. This data field is included in the single activity download via url /activities/<ID>, but not in the activity list via url /athlete/activitie, so it is not included in my Excel export.

Oh, and as I read above comments, I should think about converting distance and speed from km to miles as well. On the other hand, this is easily done in Excel...

    Happy running, racing and analyzing

  • Hey guys,

First of all, kudos to the others, who build such awesome tools to alleviate this issue. Here's my take on it:

    https://flink.run

Its free and offers some unique features I hope you find useful:

Select the data fields you want to export, use 15 different filters (including location with an address based search) to get the activities you need, preview data on flink, export to Excel, .csv and Google Sheets.

You can use the filters for a quick comparison online, e.g. to get information about the performance of a pair of shoes:

Another feature I personally wanted to have is an auto-update feature for you Google Sheet - it is automatically updated after you added a new activity to Strava, so no more need to export every now and then.

Maybe you give it a try!

    Cheers,

    Nicolas

  • Hi Nicolas,

it looks you took design and usability to another level, very impressive! I like the idea of using the auto-update of Google Sheet by linking it to your database. The concern I have is, that in order to do so, you need to permanently store all my activities in your database. Here I have a privacy concern, since I do not know you. Please do not take it personally, I just don't want anyone to have this very private data set of mine.

In my app I delete all user data after logout to ensure the maximum level of their privacy.

May I ask how you made the location search? I was looking for some database to search for the nearest city of the activities, but so far haven't found any that works offline.

  • Hi Torben,

Thank you so much for your feedback and kind words! I really appreciate the great work you did with your app. And a great question regarding the auto-update feature! Your activities are not stored in flink's database. There is only an in-memory caching mechanism (Memchached) limited to max one week that ensures you can use flink's features after login without the need to query Strava's API every time. In my database I only store the OAuth credentials, your name and profile picture link. If you invalidate flink's access to Strava this data is automatically deleted. The offline access to Google Sheets is NOT based on any activities stored by flink but triggered by Strava's Webhook API. After receiving the 'created' message the new activity is retrieved via API and added to you sheet via API but not stored by flink. What is stored however is the metadata of you Google Sheet, i.e. what setting you did use for selecting the filed names, but nothing more. It does however invalidate any previously cached values if the cache is still available.

To make things more transparent I have added the option to select if you prefer to have your data cached as long as you have flink authorized or only for the time of your current session:

The location search is based on the lat/lng data provided by the Google Maps location search field, I than calculate the distance between query and data based on a certain threshold or, of you select a country or region, by the bounding box of the queried location.

I hope this clarifies some of your questions!

    Best Nicolas

  • Both of these tools are fantastic thank you!

One thing that's missing - Grade Adjusted Pace - but maybe it's not available in the API?

  • Hi Adam,

Unfortunately you're right, GAP is not included in the Activities Summary we get from Strava's API. In fact also the pace is missing but flink calculates it based on moving time and distance.
