Separate Mountain bike rides from road rides

I belong to a group on Strava the group mostly mountain bikes I do both so when I road ride my mile are posted in the group as just a ride.

I end up with more mile then other people in the group.  Mountain biking is slower than road riding so mountain bike and road biking should be in a different column,  A 25 mile mountain bike will be the same as a 50 mile road ride

thank you

Joe

  • We need a way to differentiate between road and mountain bike. All the segments functionality is useless if we are comparing both kind of bikes.

I support this new feature request.

  • Also, it seems to me that (estimated) wattage should be adjusted at least at the road vs. mountain level. Far more rolling resistance on the typical mountain ride. I know it's just an estimate, and simple is good, but I think this is fairly low-hanging fruit.

Moving into more complexity, I'd like to see segments rated differently for trails. There is a massive discrepancy in wattage required to tackle a relatively smooth fire road at 10% than there is for a rooty, rocky technical climb at 10%. Suggested categories would be "Fire road or Doubletrack", "Smooth Singletrack" and "Technical Singletrack".

But mostly I'd just like to see rides separated as mountain and road so I can filter on my own rides, my friends' rides, and segments when searching for local rides.

  • Id also like to see the road and mountain bike segments separated. When I use the segment explorer to search for new trails I'd like to see just mountain bike trails - I have no interest riding on the road!

  • I agree with this group. In terms of difficulty due too rolling resistance: indoor track cycling is easier than road cycling, which is easier than mountain biking, which is easier than fat biking. At least there should be a differentiation between road and mountain biking. A mountain biker that rides  5000km a year has probably put in equivalent hours as a 10,000km road cyclist. The only fair  and accurate comparison of work would be to compare total watt expenditure per kg or lb of rider. Since that's a long way off if ever, distance should be qualified rather than simply quantified.

  • This is a very popular request that's been a complaint for a long time, as far back as 2012. If they can differentiate other activities, MTB can be just that; another activity.

I have a feeling they redirected all comments and feature request to the community as it's just a huge black hole and they don't want to deal with it.

Their response was "We use these forums to consolidate and collect feedback from our community so if there is enough interest, it may be something we put on the roadmap". I'm sure this request is at the top of the list since it's been collecting votes for 4 years.

  • I agree with Thai Nugye's post .I believe that Strava isn't really listening, as they simply direct the comments to a forum. However, please read the fine print and up vote the comments you agree with or there is not enough weight behind the comments. Perhaps that's the reason why.

The alternative is to use Garmin computers and their platform Garmin Connect, along with your closest peers. Garmin does recognize different riding styles to some degree, and it wouldn't take much for them to make it more of an open social media platform for athletic activities

  • Garmin Connect has sub categories, but you can't default to a sub category only a top level category. So, you still have to manually change it.

  • Hi.....yes, mountain and road should be separated. I fact I don´t know why Strava bundle them all together! Speed, distance and climbs are all very different. How many mountain bikers are totally non-plussed by the challenges that are utterly biased towards road bikes.

Strava, how about it then? We need to separate the fundamentally different disciplines and compare like with like. Take the Global Bike Network and the Global Mountain Bike Network, (on YouTube), as your model.

    Hello......is anyone out there?

  • I agree with this group - Strava is really missing the mark for mountain bikes.  All they would need to do is set a drop-down for road or off-road miles - similar to the way they allow you to specify race/workout/etc.  I really don't care to compare my mileage with other's road mileage.  Totally different.

I'd like to filter out road rides when I explore segments, too.

Also, I think downhill segments should allow for goals on mountain biking.  I mean, downhill is it's own SPORT in our type of riding - where people try to shave seconds off by working on cornering efficiently, suspension setup, COG/balance, etc.

Another app could really come and steal all the MTB riders away from Strava in a heartbeat if they offered similar features, but mountain-bike focused.  I'd jump ship same day that app was released.  Come on Strava!

  • Hi E Russel, I am a mountain biker. Ever since I joined Strava nearly a year ago there has been an argument about this....Strava seems to turn a deaf ear to all of it...!

Of course there needs to be a separation, your argument is succinct and clear but it is unlikely Strava will listen. You are also dead right about a dedicated MTB app. Strava seems to be very American  road bike centric indeed.

Also, why cannot my activities page default to ´My Activities¨instead of Í´m Following¨?

Commenting on Strava is like participating in a seance......"is there anybody there?"

  • PS, just a passing thought: how could we disseminate an electronic petition among MTB users on Strava to separate?

Maybe some computer whizz, (definitely not me), could come up with something that Strava might actually react to in a positive way.

  • I just started using Strava. I only have a Mountain bike and was surprised that Strava doesn't differentiate between road biking and mountain biking. Since Strava arranges user data competitively ie speed, it's a little demoralizing to see how "slow" I am compared to road bikes. I still like Strava and just remind myself that I'm partially much slower because I ride a mountain bike on paved roads. :o)

Still, it would be nice for Strava to differentiate road bike times from mountain bike times!

  • I'm transitioning from primarily road riding to 90% mountain biking. With it I am going to end my premium membership since everything on Strava is road bike centered.

If Strava separates Mountain biking from Road biking I will revisit my premium membership.

  • Another vote for separating the two, please!

Every time I'm looking to ride in a new area, I think the segment explore should be a great tool to help me find segments to ride, but it's next to useless because there is no way to choose between displaying road or MTB segments.

  • I have decided to end my premium membership when it expires this year as well due to not supporting mountain biking.

  • I never signed up to premium as Strava has never acknowledged my desire to seperate road and mtn bike segments or replied to the other wueries i have had.
Hearing from a few premium members they are treated similarly furthers my view not to give Strava a cent until they take interest in users requests.

  • Why can Strava have separate categories for RUN, Hike, and WALK, but they can't have one for Mountain Biking????

  • Done.  Account set to downgrade instead of renew.  Feedback was left for no support of mountain biking.  I'll be back if you support mountain biking Strava.

  • Just found this thread out of the same frustration! It's unfathomable that Strava has yet to understand the need to separate mountain biking from road biking! Strava, are you listening???

  • Hello Mates,

Hard to believe that it has been more than TWO years since this request has been made, and Strava has done nothing to help us. It is not the same doing 20K in a mountain bike ride /track than 20K in a light/easy road bike track.

If Strava is not going to do anything we need to move to other apps/etc. that can made what we need for our Mountain bike rides.

Any suggestions what app is the best for us?
