Settings to hide Zwift trainer rides in feed

Is it possible to hide all the Zwift rides within a Strava feed?  It feels like it's turning Strava into a video game.  There should be an available setting to hide Zwift/trainer rides out of the daily feed.

  • Yes - I think this is the only strategy. It's a shame about Strava. It used to be about actual endeavour and movement. Their buddying up with Zwift is misguided. Strava is going to be the Big Data gym app very soon!

  • Agree with Joe B - some transparency would be welcome. I paid a yearly subscription; as a customer I'd like to know the situation.

@Joe B - can you post links to the other threads?

  • @Joe B - the article seems to mean, unless Strava show a little filtering-consideration for the cyclists and athletes who have been their customers and community for years and who do not want to see Zwift activities in their feed, things are only going to get worse.

I'm really disappointed by Strava but will keep my Premium membership until it expires. There's no doubt they are the best cycling social network, but my feed is more than 50% Zwift at the minute and I don't want to see any of those activities. As a result, I'm unfollowing anyone who is not a good friend in my cycling community who posts Zwift. Sucks but I don't have other options if I want to see what I want to see.

Many thanks for posting the other threads by Strava users who do not want to see Zwift in their feeds.

  • Thanks everyone, there is clearly demand for this feature to hide unwanted activity types from your feed. The new algorithmic feed ordering doesn't seem to be enough to satisfy this request. I'll do my best to get this considered in 2018 and your continued feedback on this post is appreciated.

  • I let my premium subscription lapse a few months back. I don’t want to see these fake Zwift rides. That is not riding a bike. I originally posted this right at 2 years ago and no changes. At least let us sort the feed to get rid of fake rides.

  • @Simon H - I don't think @Elle Anderson is to blame, it's more likely that this is a "strategic" decision from the executives who are possibly eyeing up zwift as a potential acquisition, and everyone else in the company is being forced to toe the line.  I'm not paying for it though, so I don't have much cause to complain...

@Elle Anderson - Thanks for the update.  Rest assured, we will keep bugging you about this :)  If you want to give us any hints about how we might get a zwift-free feed in some way that's compatible with the company's larger plans, please don't hold back.

  • @Billly Cooper - nope, unless you use a plugin for Chrome.

I'm unfollowing lots of people, but I don't want to unfollow good friends either – all of whom haven't ridden their bikes once in 2018 and are posting more miles than me. It is a complete joke.

@Rob Cline - I'm thinking the same thing. Strava is still good for logging my own rides, but I can no longer gauge my efforts against fellow athletes because their arcade game miles count as riding on a road. So Strava has lost a lot of value as a result.

  • As a programmer, I know that this feature is trivially easy to implement. It's two lines: "if (options.hideZwiftRides && activity.type == 'zwift') { activity.show = false; }" or similar.

The fact that Strava has not implemented this feature means that there must be political reasons for not doing it. The Chrome add-on does not work in the mobile app. Unfollowing people who post Zwift rides is probably the only option.

  • +1 I would also like to be able to exclude virtual rides.

  • @Chris Heerschap I wouldn't be too worried about "Elle". In reality "she" most likely isn't a real person anyway, but a collective of employees who respond to community posts.

If you make your official replies come from a single point of contact and give it a nice young female personality it statistically reduces message board friction. Classic customer service technique.

  • Actually considering a strava cull as the mass of indoor rides is getting seriously bad in the feed

  • +1... I don't care to see people's zwift activities on my feed

  • I agree with Joe B - great suggestion. Make Zwift a separate activity type so we can compare like with like. This isn't an anti-Zwift vendetta--it's because Zwift data is polluting our real rides feed.

  • I stand corrected, Chris. I'm sure now Skoda are paying Bradley Wiggins to advertise their jalopies he's running their corporate strategy too :-)

    Hi Billy,

Thanks very much for reaching out. It's not currently possible to specify which activity types you'd like to receive notifications for, but I'll be happy to share your feedback with our Product development team.

Please let me know if I can assist with anything else.

    Best,

  • Dear strava: at least give us a Tool so we can abandon zwift from strava clubs, who want no zwift. Then at least you do something for us. At the moment i feel like strava does nothing for their users who hate zwift.

  • Feature request: I want to see my ride mileage, excluding my virtual rides. I do some work on a trainer, but I want to see how many real miles I ride each month.

  • My simple solution is to just unfollow my friends that post virtual rides, which is a bit sad but effective.

  • If you run uBlock in your browser (possibly also Adblock Plus) this has made my Strava feed fantastically better:

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ChrisHeerschap/ublock/master/ublock.txt

in uBlock preferences, under "Custom Lists", add that URL. Your feed will be waaaay simpler, and most of the "hey, TRY OUT THIS THING" stuff will be removed, as well as all the Zwift/Trainer Road/Peloton stuff.

Or wait for Strava to do something about it... 🤣

  • Thanks Chris.  Reasonable suggestion.  I would prefer to keep all of my data together, but I may do that.  I was talking a quick look at the API info a couple of days ago.  If the activities have an identifier that they are zwift, I may just run a webserver to connect a webhook into so that when I complete an activity, if it is Zwift, it would be changed to private automatically.

  • Thats not the best solution, but it's quite a nice workaround: Google "elevate for strava". It's a browser plugin (chrome, opera and firefox), so it won't effect the view in your app. But you have several options to modify the web view. You can also exclude rides or runs under a specified distance and you got a lot of extra analysis of your data.
