Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • Whilst I understand that this might be a form of encouragement, there is absolutely no point in rewarding people simply because the fastest time on a segment was made years ago. It should serve as more of a motivating factor if you cannot get that KOM you might be after.

Absolutely disagree with this feature. If you are not good enough to get the KOM or top 10 or whatever you might be after, then you need to train more or work harder.

  • Hi

I now notice that I have stopped looking  at my Strava each morning  to see what my friends have been doing as it is just clutter. Please turn this feature off soon.  I don't think that it will take too long before the damage becomes long lasting.

  • I can appreciate that some people may find "annual" PRs/KOMs/QOMs motivating but the weight of opinion in these comments is that it is annoying noise/clutter.  Please allow us to switch this off.  I don't mind having filters for segment KOMs/QOMs to exclude or include the current year.  But I just want a simple option in my profile where I can choose to show my own PRs for "all time" &/or "last 12 months" &/or "present year".

  • elle anderson, its been 13 days, read the feedback, no one likes it, (apart from some fat some MAMILS) so just speak to your boss and turn it off. simples, strava has made a mistake now rectify it!!

  • @Giles Greening - show some respect, those of us that like the feature have good reasons why we like it that have nothing to do with being fat MAMILs. Try to look at this objectively and understand more points of view than just your own. And if you have better ideas about how to keep Strava segments fresh and worth attacking again after you already own most of your local KOMs, maybe try providing some constructive suggestions rather than just slinging mud at other riders. You seem to have a few KOMs yourself, you should be able to understand why it's important as Strava ages and segments are around for a long time, to find some way to reset and open the segment to be challenged again, to keep Strava fun and competitive like it was when it was new. There are probably other ways that nobody has thought of yet so if you have some better ideas let's hear them.

  • eric johnson, yes i do have a very good idea, delete this feature, and pay more attention to PR's because thats what really matters.

  • Giles, I've been training with a power meter for years and I know for a fact that PRs and the related time-based 2nd best/3rd best efforts are overwhelmingly influenced by riding conditions and riding partners and not fitness or effort levels. So while I accept that for many people they like seeing the PRs and it means something to them, they don't mean anything to me an objectively there is a strong case that they are not important. What is important to me, but which is not supported by Strava as an achievement, is my measured power output over the segment. If they used that rather than time, then the PR/2nd best/3rd best effort would really have meaning to me. From my perspective, the cups and achievements are already so polluted with useless PR information that I don't pay attention to it anyway. What does matter is the power curve, and I like looking at the results 'on the day' to see who the strongest riders were on the segments and what power they were making (and who they were riding with if not solo). If I had the freedom to choose what was in my ride achievements I would like to know the KOMs and season to date KOMs, achievements based on measured power over segments, and achievements based on power curve 'bests' i.e. best 2s/5s/10s/15s/30s/60s/120s/180s/240s/5min/10min/15min/20min/30min/45min/1hr/1.5hr/2hr/3hr/4hr/5hr power both for season to date and all time. And the power curve achievements should be supported for indoor trainer rides as well as long as there is measured power data. And of course 'season to date' shouldn't be fixed to start at Jan 1 because the season varies depending on where you live. FWIW I do support everyone that wants to be able to turn off seeing these things, but it would also be nice for those of us that want a quick and easy way to see the things that matter to us to have a way to do it.

  • OK Elle, Now that CX Nats are over, hopefully you're back in the office discussing how to correct this issue. As many have stated, an option not to see the Fake KOM's would be preferred. I agree with many it should be an "Opt In" feature for those who feel this will motivate them.

  • Please get rid of the meaningless empty cups that have RUINED Strava.  No opt out feature.  Just get rid of it.  Of all the things you could do to make Strava better (like make it easy to see 2014 annual results in 2015), doing this instead was  a very bad move.

  • I dislike this a lot. Please allow this useless feature to be toggled off in our set up options, I have no desire to view these lame ass meaningless awards.

  • Add a filter option in setting so I can only see what I want to see.

Filter to only see all time PR instead or 2, 3rd best time or annual PRs.

If I want to see if I'm KOM for the day then let me have a setting.

This way you keep everyone happy

  • I don't understand the uproar. If you are focusing on timed PR's, there is a good chance that you are focusing on a nonsense metric in the first place, since timed PRs are very often affected less by how well you rode a segment (i.e. power output) and more on external factors (the riders you were with, how much wheel you sucked, the prevailing wind and weather at the time).

If you come home and count up how many trophies you got on a ride, you are really just goofing around on the bike (AND THAT IS FINE, JUST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE DOING), and so what's wrong with some more goofy trophies? And if you do care about the trophies, give it some time, the 2015 leaderboards and trophies will settle down after a few weeks.

Get a powermeter and you will ignore the trophies and instead focus on the power that you were able to generate over segments. That is actually useful information.

I would rather see Strava introduce individual power PRs (a lightning bolt with PR, 2 or 3 in it), because these would be the most "relevant" trophies a rider could win, but really, 2015 KOMs and PRs don't bother me in the slightest. Mainly because KOMs and PRs are already imperfect, noisy metrics (though admittedly, fun to play with sometimes!) But they are just that, fun and games. Not true measures of training and progress.

  • This is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've seen from Strava.  Please turn it off, or at least, give me the option to turn it off for my rides/runs...

  • Give me the option to turn tis off, or at least select the date where the new achievements start.  For example, I may wish to restart my achievements after the crash I had and the rehab that went along with it.

Also, let me turn off display of short segments; I'm uninterested in segments that are under a minute.  Some people may care, but I don't so please let me uncluttered my ride view from all the tiny sprints.

  • Hi Strava,

A couple of points w.r.t. the 2015 KOMs (which I like):

    1.  When I go to my KOMs the 2015 KOMs aren't shown!!  There's not much point in my chasing them down if they are not there for me (& others) to admire!

    2.  I don't seem to be receiving any notifications that I have lost any 2015 KOMs, however, it's hard to tell if this is actually the case (or not) as they are hard to keep track of (see point 1!).

I would like to see my 2015 KOMs and those of others listed in one place..., there's not much fun to be had unless the two points above are addressed.

And just to add a point I have made in an earlier post, I would like to be able to set the 2015 leaderboard as the default one, it is a pain each time I get a notification to have to, once again, select "This Year".

    Thanks!

  • I would like to be able to turn these off.  It seem like everything becomes a 2015 PR with the new year and it just clutters up my sense of progress.  Thanks.

  • I am a premium member and happy to support Strava, but this feature creates a lot of noise in reviewing a ride that's been done during multiple years.  Please turn have the option to look at this view separately.

  • Hi Elle,

There still seems very little to "review" after a simple message from your customers.

TURN THE 2015 KOMs OFF !!

This morning I rode our usual group Wed ride which is bit of a benchmark ride.

If I ride well, average over 29kms/hr , and put in some big efforts for me, I'm rewarded with a few cups for my efforts.

    That makes me happy.

This morning it was wet, I averaged just over 26 kms/hr and was awarded 79 cups FOR WHAT ???????

    That makes me very annoyed.

What is the point of that and also your "review" of customer input.

Please, please tell me what I am missing in Strava management's thought process that they think Premium customers want this feature?

Turn it off please. plain and simple.

Not an opt out either .

Turn it off and have an opt in feature for those who , WHAT EVER reason , feel they need it.

Regards (but bored with no decent reply )

    Kevin.

  • Shamelessly copied and pasted but could not have said it better.

I would like to see 2015 PR's and course records removed. If they can't be removed at least have the option to opt out of having those results appear on my activities. I only want to know how I relate to my best all time. Imagine having a CR or PR show on an activity that is much slower than your best overall times. That is almost embarrassing to me...I am sure many can relate. I am pushing to be the best version of myself..not the best slower version.

Please make this a user option!

  • Please stop the madness.  Prior to this new yearly achievement feature Strava already provided a filter for yearly status of any segment.  No reason to go beyond that.  I can't even get through the activity report emails you send out now as every single ride has a laundry list of "achievements" which in most cases are far from that.  At the very least allow for an option in our profile to turn this off. I'll keep it to this as it would appear I'm far from the only person using Strava who feels this way.  Score one more for the opposition.

  • Not much more I can say that hasn't already been said by other. This feature is ridiculous. I'm getting achievements for poor efforts. Get rid of it or at the very least make it opt in.

  • Dear Strava product manager,

It is should be clear to you by now that your users don't want this Yearly Achievement feature.

I know it's hard to reverse yourself, but I have a suggestion.

Please send this email to the community:

"Thank you for your passionate feedback regarding the new Annual Achievement feature. Based on the overwhelming response from our loyal users, we are turning this feature off while we enhance Strava to provide a filter for those who desire to opt.in or out of seeing Annual Achievements."

Keep on cycling and pile on those All-time PRs.

  • I find this new yearly achievement feature highly distracting.  The majority of the comments I have read do not like this at all.  I think Strava has created something that techies thought would be cool and now they can't figure out how to undo the program.  Hmm.  If that is the case, then could you at the very least make the 2015 achievements a totally different color (like Green) so as not to confuse people as to what is the overall and what is the yearly.  Better yet, figure out the program to get it back to how it was in the past.  PLEASE!!!!!

  • For me the "Annual Achievements" feature not only has no value, it clutters up my experience with Strava. I realize the feature must have been the result of the requests from some users, so I don't discount the value to those individuals. Could Strava at least create the ability to disable the feature, through our display settings?

  • I'm a big fan of Strava and am a Premium member. However, I want to register my frustration with the new annual PR 'thing'. It's ridiculous and unnecessary. It's such a distraction to see all those PRs etc for rides I've been doing for years. It's also confusing having to discern between the outlined ones and filled ones. You guys have messed up the beautiful simplicity of Strava with this palaver. Please reassess, and get ride of it. A lot of my mates on Strava - also Premium members - feel the same. JD.
