Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • In response to the power meter comments. I have a power meter and agree that looking at your power curve its a better way to judge your own performance. However, the whole value proposition of Strava is the ability to compare yourself over given segments to other people (and your own previous rides). If all you want to do is look at your own power output then you don't need Strava and use Golden Cheetah (free) or Training peaks which have much better power meter analysis tools anyway.

This "feature" makes it hard to see whether your own ride was any good(compared to yourself or others) and whilst people may take the effort to see through the clutter on their own ride, its going to severly reduce the number of people who bother to go through the rides of those they follow. This will lead to much reduced Kudos and commenting on other peoples rides and thus the whole riding community point of Strava. At which point people will move to personal training software as mentioned above ans Strava will fade away.

The radio silence we have heard from Elle of the past week makes me worry that Strava has decided to bury their head in the sand on this one and hope that time will come to their rescue by removing some of the clutter.

Please can someone from Strava respond on this thread that they are taking our concerns and at the minimum implementing an opt out feature for both the user and everyone they are followings Annual "Acheivements". There is only so long that angered users will keep their comments in this forum if you do not address our concerns.

  • Enough. Turn it off. I'm earning trophies for going slower?! Fail.

  • The 2015 Top Results feature is making Strava pointless to use.  I enjoy seeing how my segments compare to my friends and more so how they stack up to my previous efforts.  Whether or not I did it in 2015 means absolutely nothing to me.  It's cluttering the feed and just plain stupid.  Please either remove the feature or give us the opportunity to OP-IN if we want it but the default should be opt'd out.

  • I have to agree with the consensus here.  I've basically stopped looking at "trophies" altogether because when you get 100+ per ride they become effectively meaningless.  Yes, I understand they'll go down naturally with time, but we're two weeks into the year, and all my rides are still littered with garbage trophies.    I'm surprised there's no trophy for my mid-ride potty break.

  • I got a couple of top 10s on Sunday but didn't realise because only 2015 KoMs appeared in the feed. I'd like to be able to disable them and I think all time top 10s on any segment should be prioritised over 2015 KoMs in the feed.

  • Why isn't Strava responding to the negative feedback? This is a colossal blunder that cheapens everybody's efforts.

  • Does anyone else get the feeling that we're being ignored here?

There seem to be many people that are unhappy with this imposition. So far it seems that the feedback and suggestions have been reasonable and constructive. But there has been no acknowledgement.

You can't just stay silent. Make a decision and tell us what you're going to do about our concerns. But please consider our concerns (and also keep in mind that not everyone that uses Strava is a roadie).

We can then decide on how we wish to respond. After all, many of us are paying for this service so we are customers and you should be exercising some 'customer service'.

    Thank you.

  • Unfortunately Strava is not listening to us.  I appreciate that this feature might be good for some, like the mountain bikers whose trails change overtime, and those getting older or returning to the sport, but the overwhelming responses to this feature are negative.

I have now opted to not renew my premium membership because of this feature.  I urge all others to do the same.  Maybe Strava will listen when they start to lose paying members.  Vote with you wallet guys.

  • As a primarily MTB competitor (who also rides a lot on the road), I think the rational that the 2015 Accomplishments are for the benefit of MTB riders is basically BS. Like me, I'm guessing very few MTB riders value this new feature.  I get that others would like to be able to filter data for 2015.  Fine, give them a filter to do that (which I think pretty much already exists).

These 2015 Accomplishments are really not indicative of anything. I towed my 6-year-old daughter around on a trail-a-bike attached to my single speed MTB the other day and racked up six 2015 KOMs -- our average speed was about 9 mph and a week later our record is still standing. Yeah me!!!!! I feel even more accomplished than I did when I earned that participation ribbon during my 5th grade field day outing!

Seriously, I really like Strava and have made a point of signing up for Premium. I did it because I wanted to support the company because -- quite frankly -- the Premium extras are pretty useless to me. All the most valuable aspects of Strava are available in the free version. This goofy new feature (and the complete lack of response from Strava) really has me rethinking whether it makes sense to remain a Premium member.

As has been repeated so many times on this thread, PLEASE! give us the damn option to opt out!

  • Hi folks...  i confess to being at least pleased to see that there is this many complaints about this idea - a pretty impressive outpouring of feedback, when it was a challenge to find this place to even put my comments...

the concern is that Strava does not seem to be listening / responding?

if a company i worked in got this sort of feedback, we'd be hugely excited to have the opportunity to connect with such a spontaneous groundswell of opinion, and we'd be pretty focused on listening i'd have thought.

i don't know if there's a preponderance of free vs paid that means Strava doesn't seem to need to respond, but at a minimum, I'd have thought there would be a new filter that allowed you to turn the feature off...

how can any company ignore this sort of volume of feedback?

[oh, i think the 'everyone wins a prize' trophy idea is a really bad one, by the way!!]1

  • Well if Strava is not going to respond us, we can try to follow the Money. These guys http://sigmawest.com/t/gregory-gretsch made a venture capital investment in Strava to the tune of $3.5 million in 2011. I honestly think this feature is going to be detrimental to their investment. Perhaps if enough of us contact Greg directly at greg@sigmawest.com, we can get some traction on this issue.

  • Please turn the feature off, until you can make a way for it to be opt in (or out).  I like the suggestion from another user:

    ===

Please send this email to the community:

"Thank you for your passionate feedback regarding the new Annual Achievement feature. Based on the overwhelming response from our loyal users, we are turning this feature off while we enhance Strava to provide a filter for those who desire to opt.in or out of seeing Annual Achievements."

    ===

When revising the feature, some suggestions while I’m here (also shamelessly lifted):

    1.  Provide an option to select the date where the new achievements start.  For example, a rider may wish to restart achievements after a crash and subsequent rehab; or a two year absence, or whatever.

    2.  Provide a switch to turn off display of short segments – while some may care about segments that are under a minute, perhaps a good filter for those that want an uncluttered ride view free from all the tiny sprints.

    3.  To address the ‘freshening’ of segments that have been long owned by someone or reducing the challenge for a regular ride, have an optional “see only recent (last two years, 12 months, 6 months, whatever) trophies” switch for a ride?

    4.  Perhaps add a field which allows you to track “% of a ‘mark’” (where, for example, ‘mark’ is your personal best, or a target mate you are chasing, or the KOM or whatever…)

Thank you – hopefully someone is listening!

+1 to lots of your commenters, but specifically:

    +1 @Craig .

    +1 @Eric Johnson

  • I hate yearly PR and KOM Strava has implemented this year. It's annoying, clutters the page, and has absolutely zero meaning. Please take it away!

  • Good morning,

We've released an improvement to the "Top Results" section of the activity page, where the highlighted achievements are shown for the ride. Previously, Annual Achievements were appearing in the "Top Results" section when there were existing all-time achievements. Now, you'll see your most significant achievements, as determined in order or priority from:

    • All-time KOM/QOM, Overall top-10
    • All-time PR
    • Annual Overall
    • Annual PR

So, your Activity page will now show your three best achievements highlighted under top results. Next up for a similar change are the achievements highlighted in the Dashboard's Activity Feed. These are minor fixes meant to help with achievement visibility, and only address a few of the feedback comments shared here.

    Achievement Priority:

I also want to clarify the way we prioritize achievements, meaning the order of priority we use when a segment effort qualifies for more than one achievement. For example, a segment effort could simultaneously qualify for a 5th place all-time overall, an all-time PR, and a 2015 annual KOM. In these cases, we prioritize all-time achievements over annual achievements. This means that if you receive an 1st, 2nd or 3rd place all-time PR that also qualifies for an annual achievement, the all-time PR medal will be shown.

This information is not meant to solve the issues and feedback raised here, but hopefully the context is helpful. Annual Achievements may still clutter and confuse the interface, but Strava will correctly recognize All-Time achievements the same way as before this new feature. Meaning, only segment efforts that don't qualify for any type of All-Time achievement will be awarded Annual Achievements.

We hope you continue to leave your feedback about Annual Achievements, as we are combing through the comments to determine how we can make this right. Please understand that we are listening to your feedback, and we thank you for your patience!

  • Elle Your update doesn't satisfy the request to make this an opt-in feature. This is what the majority would like to see as a fix! Is this something you're still working on? If it's not an option, please let us know. If not, I'll also need confirmation I will receive a credit for the unused portion of my premium membership. This was renewed a week before the release of this feature, which if I knew had known about, I would not have signed for another year.

  • Elle,

I'm with Charles.  You need to make this optional.  I do not wish to see it and most of the comments repeat that feeling.  I appreciate that you are diluting it, but diluted dirty toilet water still smells like...  well you know.  What is so hard with making this an optional feature, or removing it totally?  You have lost me as a premium customer, Charles and others will be leaving shortly.  Please just admit this is a failure.  You had a great product, but not currently.

  • Please, please, please remove this awful feature from Strava, or make a switch in settings where one can choose not to display this stuff. It serves no purpose whatsoever and it only emphasizes that Strava is all and only about speed, which it not should be. From all the features I have seen in Strava this is the worst ever.
