Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • This new 2015 achievements are ridiculous and there should be an opt out.  It's falsely increasing my actual achievements I should be getting.  I rode the other day and got 137 achievements for one long ride?  Really!!!!!!!!!  That a quarter of the achievements that I earned in 2014.  Stop the 2015 PR's!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Elle. Please update if this will be changed to be able to be turned off. I have already allowed my premium subscription to lapse. And will cease to use strava at all in the next couple of days if I have to continue to wade through useless data.

Please provide an update as to whether this will be able to be turned of or not. I have already allowed my premium subscription to lapse and will cease to use strava at all in the next couple of days of I would be required to continue wade through useless data.

  • I find the 2015 achievements an utter waste of time and wish Strava would give up on it. It's annoying thinking my premium fee is being used on this. There are many more important things, to me at any rate I'd like to see implemented. For example I'd love to see achievements for the fastest by age group over a segment. Give us old boys something to go after :-)

  • "Annual Achievements may still clutter and confuse the interface, "

Thanks for acknowledging the clutter and confusion caused by the new feature, Elle, but this latest change only makes matters worse.

"Strava will correctly recognize All-Time achievements the same way as before this new feature. Meaning, only segment efforts that don't qualify for any type of All-Time achievement will be awarded Annual Achievements. "

This is worse because you're conflating all time achievements and annual achievements even more.

If you won't get rid of annual achievements then you should make them totally separate. For example, called them ribbons instead of cups. Then, award and total annual achievement ribbons completely independently of all-time achievement cups.

There would still be some additional clutter from the annual achievement ribbons, but at least it wouldn't be confused with the all-time achievement cup information.

But it makes no sense to not award an annual achievement ribbon just because a particular performance also happens to earn an all-time achievement cup. My fastest time ever on a given segment is of course my fastest time this year. If you're going to award annual achievements then award them correctly! Calculate, track and display annual achievements totally independently from annual achievements.

  • I tried to find any logic, benefit or advantage to this feature.  There is none.  PLEASE revert back to the regular all-time type of PR's.  This is really an mess.

  • Some day this may be taught in business schools as an example of how a company made a mistake, didn't listen to their customers and fix it, and began a slow descent into irrelevance. I hope not. But the that's the way this is going.

  • Please remove this feature. I have yet to talk to anybody who likes it. It's tarnishing the strava image.

  • Agreed…It shows 168 pr's in january alone. These are not pr's! This is not little league where everyone gets a participation trophy. It is ok if someone can't ride a section as fast as someone else. I just don't get why anyone would even want this.

  • Sounds like I'm preaching to the choir (well at least the community choir), but please turn this 'feature' off, or at least make it an option (and while you are at it make it default to off - 'cos I don't want it)

    cheers

  • I agree - VERY annoying going for a ride and having to trawl through a multitude of "PR'Ss" that aren't even close to my actual PR's. This 'feature' should be limited to the drop down menu for filtering between "All Time" etc on a segment and not displayed in the feed. Alternatively a toggle switch in our settings to just disable the "This Year" feature entirely. Just hide the data we don't want to see.

  • Among the many things that this new feature ruins, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is (was) influenced by the number of achievements earned in deciding who gets to have kudos.  By adding the annual achievements to the all-time achievements for a new total number of achievements, this number is now meaningless.

The complaining about the "empty cups" feature is not limited to this forum.  I see it on Facebag, Twitter, and local forums, not to mention in the names people give to their rides on Strava.

  • I just found this glossary of achievements posted by Elle.  Although it's dated April 12, 2012, it has obviously been recently updated.

    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

They obviously put a lot of thought (time and money) into this, but still completely missed a few key matters.  I suspect the time and money sunk into this make them reluctant to turn it off, but that's very short-sighted thinking.

  • Hi Strava,

Some more feedback on the 2015 rewards (which I like) and how they are working.

As someone who wants to see the 2015 rewards, sometimes I am not seeing them!  Actually, I have noticed that I am not seeing rewards for starred segments, which of course are the rewards I particularly want to see! For example, this evening I got my 2015 PB on "Palatine Road sprint" (link below), but received no notification.

Palatine Road sprint, example of 2015 PB with no rewards: https://www.strava.com/segments/1012038?filter=overall

    Hope you will investigate.

    Thanks,

    Bryn.

  • So, these useless 2015 accomplishments have caused me to look a little closer at Garmin Connect. Lots more features! It's not as simple to navigate, but all kinds of useful data is rolled into the segments (including wind speed and direction).  There's much I like about Strava, but this silliness with the 2015 brownie buttons is enough to make me rethink whether this is where I want to track my performance. I'm not interested in anything but the overall accomplishments, and Strava's unwillingness to simply allow me to opt out is really aggravating. One more Premium user looking elsewhere.

  • For those that want to try a different system (like Garmin Connect) you can download all your Strava data in one simple step - just go to your Settings page, on the bottom right there is a button that when clicked will send you a email with a link to download ALL our Strava Activities. You can now use this data to upload to a different system. Took me less than 5 minutes to get all my data uploaded to Garmin Connect.

  • What is taking Strava so long to properly respond to members feedback?  Why is this 'feature' still showing? Please remove it now.  I can no longer tell if I am riding better or worse than ever.

  • Strava,

You made a mistake in implementing this to all of your users. I know its hard to undo all of that hard work, but you have to do it. You might say it will get better later in the year, but no one cares.

I don't really look at my rides anymore, let alone look at others to sort through all the junk.

Have an opt-in to see if there is demand, otherwise please turn it off.

Thanks for making a great product

  • Elle - can you please confirm whether or not Strava plans on putting the removal of this feature on their roadmap? Out of 3 pages of responses....TWO people are pleased with this.

Please realize that none of us NEED strava.  It's a nice app, it creates some fun tracking against ourselves and our peers but we do not NEED to use this.  Strava does however NEED us to make their app successful.

The bottom line is simple...if there is a need for an app for athletes that doesn't include a 2015 PR....it won't take long to develop one and if has what cyclists / athletes find useful, don't be surprised if Strava hangs out with the founders of MySpace at a small bar somewhere talking about the good old days.

  • Post 1/2: Hello everyone -

We added a view for "This Year" to the drop down Leaderboard filter on the activity page. I hope this saves a few clicks and provides more context around the Annual Leaderboard:

  • Elle,

Are you kidding us with this stuff?  Can you not tell your users are pissed?  Why won't you make this optional?

I don't want to see it in my activities!  I don't want to see it in other peoples activities!  I don't want in cluttering up my Activity Feed!

    JUST TURN IT OFF!!!!!

  • Post 2/2:

We hear your feedback loud and clear regarding an opt-out feature, or a setting to mute or disable the new Annual Achievements, allowing you to control the achievements you see on Strava. There's no doubt that this is a significant trend in product feedback, and we are committed to doing what it takes to address your feedback and tackle the big picture issues here.

We will have a more detailed update for you after we finish discussing your feedback and the possible solutions. We really appreciate your patience while we explore the options and assess the development path forward.

In the meantime, please continue to leave your comments - every piece of feedback helps us better shape this feature for you. Thanks!

For god's sake, revert to the old system while you sort out this cluster f***.  You've admitted this is a huge failure, so end it now.

  • Thanks Elle, looking forward to an opt in only or at least a one click, one time, global setting to opt out forever. Would it be possible for your team to share future ideas with the forum before rolling them out? This may save everyone a lot of time.
