  • Yet another vote for uploading via PC/web.

Just tried to instigate a request for this facility and been referred back to this so for what its worth I will attach it here:

There has been a lot of discussion regarding adding photos to an Activity - from a computer/PC/Laptop via the Website - over a long period now. A lot of users want this and seem to be getting frustrated at it not being available. [See 'Photos on Strava (iOS and Android app)']. However I have not seen a formal request for for such a facility. Please can you add this feature. After all, users can upload photos to their profile from a computer without a problem.......

  • [Android] Need the ability to add photos from cloud storage locations like Google Photos, OneDrive, third-party file managers.

UPDATE: This is even more important now that the decision was made to not allow web uploads. I take ride pics with a cheap point-n-shooter and getting those photos to the proper location on my phone so I can pick them from Strava is a major pain.

Other Android apps present cloud storage locations in their  Open from menus. Looking at the Android API it looks like it may just be parameter on ACTION_GET_CONTENT intent. Please at the very least, add the ability to select from cloud storage in the Android app. Thanks!

  • What are these other projects, Elle?  Can you name one that would interest users as much as this one?  I'm actually getting kind of bored with Strava.   I'll probably just start using it to track my mileage and will forget about trying to follow people's activities or spend time on the site.  Most of the comments are inane.  "Great ride bro."  "incredible effort!"  This is the kind of crap you get when people are encouraged to tap on iPhones instead of using an actual input device, such as a computer keyboard.  I find I'm just checking in every few days instead of several times a day as in the recent past.  I don't bother to snap interesting photos on the trail because you don't support my device, and it's getting to be too much of a bother to upload tracks from my Garmin.  So I'll just do that every week or so.  Just another fitness tracking app.  Yawn.

  • Folks, anyone who has ever worked in software knows what the problem is. Strava has a limited number of developers and wants to prioritize their time according to what their users value the most. ANY FEATURE requires developer time being taken from something else. Also, it is not the developers controlling what they spend time on. It is their managers who are rightfully super strict about what they authorize time to be spent on.

Therefore, our job is to inform Strava that THIS should be prioritized. I'm leaving my comment to say that photo uploads through the web interface is an important feature to me. It is one of the few ways in which I am unsatisfied with Strava and I can't think of another feature I would like implemented before this one. Please allow us to upload photos through the web interface!

  • Your post - 'Add a Photo to an Activity - Android' - clearly states

    • There is no limit on the number of photos you can attach to your activity, however the mobile app activity page will only display 6 photos while the web will show 12 at this time.

I attached 17 ( at the time i was unaware of any limits and the app certainly didn't inform of of such) however I am still only able to see 6 in the web browser.

I'm very disappointed that the pictures from my ride have failed to appear.  I'm also disappointed that I couldn't us the PC to upload pictures.  This along with this -  https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208835307-Custom-Unit-Preferences-Miles-Kg-Celsius-  are causing me to reconsider my premium membership.

  • I'm confused regarding the inability to upload pictures from my computer.  Screenshots captured while riding in Zwift show up just fine and I don't interact with the mobile app at all during those rides.  I'm guessing the reason you don't allow uploading from the computer is that the information gleaned from geo-tagged pictures is extremely valuable to Strava.  If that's the case then it might be helpful to just say it outright.  I'd love to see the ability to upload from a desktop added since there are editing tools and other programs I link pictures to which reside on that computer.

  • I think it prudent and a simple thing to add the feature that so many people (hundreds) have overtly requested. The reasons given a few months ago by Elle for not implementing this seem detached from the reality of the effort required to code this into the desktop site.

There are no reasonable issues preventing the function of PC Desktop image uploads from being introduced.

  • I copied a photo into my ipad roll from an email. On one day, it worked fine. On another day Strava could not find the photo on the roll even though it was clearly there. Tried more than once, no luck.  Buggy evidently. Add my vote for loading photo from computer option.

  • "As heavily requested as making the existing photo upload feature work better?"

Why not? People often think the things that bother them most are the most important, when in reality way many more people may be interested in some other problem. I find the photos side of things incredibly annoying, particularly as I'm a photographer. Yet on balance being tracked by girlfriend if I'm out riding on my own is actually far more important. If I want to share photos FB, my website or other social platforms are much better for it in reality.

As it happened some twunt in a car nearly killed me last night whilst going to local shops on bike. Something which made me realise even little trips like that where I ended up going to a different location than originally planned, beacon could be very useful.

  • Still a clunky and completely unnecessary workaround which only works for limited cases. Those who want to use their desktop for editing and processing their images are still stuffed. WiFi cards may not be fast enough for use or even more importantly reliable enough. More expensive too, particularly if the main manufacturer of wifi cards drops support for your card forcing you to upgrade to a newer version, which happened recently. Raw image processing may be another barrier, though Snapseed now offers raw image processing.

  • "However, being a small company, we have other projects we've prioritized at this time".

You take enough money of your premium members to hire more staff, don't give me that story. Maybe stop making pointless videos and redirect the funds to something useful.

You should focus on listening to your users and trying to implement fixes to the many amateurish flaws that we point out - being able to upload photos from a computer is a very simple function, most other activity trackers can do this without issue, why do you make a song and dance about it?

Another basic function that Strava can't do is record HR data for stationary rides (which has been pointed it out by hundreds of members in this "support" forum, which you ignore), again you could sort this issue out but you'd rather just not look after your customers. This is probably a waste of time anyway, because you'll ignore this comment too.

  • Elle, That is probably the most lame excuse I've ever heard for not doing something. Give us a break, this subject has been flogged for several years now while Strava gives us little things like videos and excuses. Strava leadership obviously have other priorities so just say so. I pay my annual premium dues just to use the system and I've gotten to the point where I don't expect Strava to come up with anything new or useful. Other apps are superior to Strava BUT almost everyone I know who rides worldwide is already on Strava so you have the numbers and that's that. I see other users getting angry but I say, "chill out", Strava isn't going to give us what we want and that should be obvious so just cycle, enjoy your rides and don't waste anymore time trying to harangue them into giving us something useful that we want. Well just continue to post our rides on photos on Facebook and get on with our lives.

  • Please please add a feature to allow photo upload via PC. So many members use GPS devices and not their phones to upload activities...reading the feedback it looks like this has a huge following to make this happen. Thx in advance :)

  • This is ridiculous! What a crummy excuse "...a full project backlog through to the end of the year..." I pay real money to Strava to display my rides including my photos.

Software that doesn't adapt to user demand, fails.

I think developers I know could sort this in weeks! I suspect it's the hosting costs that Strava won't pay for.

  • Hmm. No time to implement photo uploads, but a whole lot of development time went into this worthless POS "Year in Sport"...  https://2016.strava.com/en-us/share/186798/

  • That's exactly why I discontinued my membership.  First, they got rid of google street view--an essential feature to scope out landmarks in a route.  Secondly, the made their UI worse--the first generation UI was so much better and easier to navigate.  Thirdly, no way to upload photos from my computer--so basic a requirement in any social media site.

  • It is AMAZING just how much Strava does not care about the feedback from their users. For two plus years, people have been clamoring for the ability to upload from a MAc or a PC...and Strava has literally done nothing and said nothing. Nothing.

Why on Earth anyone would pay for Premium when the SIMPLEST of functionality is missing.

    Unreal...

Does the CEO see these message boards? A better question: does he even give a sh*t???

  • Thank you Strava for adding this simple to use functionality. Much appreciated.

I would like to make the following observations:

    • Not everyone uses the mobile app
    • Although its clearly a sophisticated bit of software its a pain to use for those of us with bad eyes and fat fingers ;).
    • Despite having the ability to capture an image, a phone is not a camera.
    • Transferring photos to the phone to upload an image is a painful dodgy workaround.
    • Those of us using actual cameras would like desktop support to upload real photos taken with real cameras.

Having said that, the capability works as expected and for this I am grateful and looking forward to the rollout of this capability to the desktop version.

As a final note, the mobile version is obviously where a lot of development time has gone but frankly, I never use it. I record on a garmin and monitor on the desktop version using Chrome, Stravaplus and veloviewer. And my pics are all on the desktop, not the phone.

However since this is now the gateway for photos, I'll probably use it for that until a desktop version arrives.

  • I agree with others regarding desktop support, especially as I want to move away from using my phone for Strava photos. I take photos on my rides with a small camera, so it’d be easier for me if I didn’t need to Bluetooth them across to my Android app before uploading. On the plus side, at least I now have the option of only using my camera, so thanks for that.

Other issues I would highlight include lack of captioning ability (not all photos are worth 1,000 words) and the modest 600-pixel horizontal picture size. This underwhelming size looks okay on a sharper smartphone or Retina screen, but on a standard PC monitor lacks the same impact.  Would these scaled 600-pixel images display at 768 pixels on a large screen? I note that I can right-click ‘view image’ and see a larger photo. Accepting that this is not predominantly a photography website, just a few more pixels for landscape photos would be nice.

  • @Andrew, I've followed up with you about the duplicate photos in a support ticket.

    All -

Thanks for your continued feedback and comments. It's clear that support for website support for native photos is the leading trend. I'll be sure to share this feedback with the team, and I'll keep this thread up-to-date with further information. Thanks!

  • @Elle - oh, yes ... sorry I missed that - I concur with @Tomas on that. I also absolutely concur with his comment regarding disbelief and dismay over the fact that you guys have released the iOS/Android photo feature, but have no plans for a desktop version. +1 that the desktop version should have been first, before the mobile ones.

  • A quick update; uploading from the iphone app is pretty painless once you stab the teeny tiny edit button. That can take a while. So it works pretty well, but still it would be awesome to not have to mess about with the phone at all to load photos. I'm not going to mess about with moving images to the phone so right now I'm using images taken on the phone which given the low res is just fine with Strava. Real pics are still going on fb.

Thank you Strava for making it happen. I look forward to seeing the functionality appear in the desktop interface.
