  • One more request for uploading from a PC...

  • Hi Elle,

Thanks for the reply.  I guess I must have struck a nerve--you've been silent on this topic for months.  While I appreciate that Strava has to prioritize features, can you share an example of a feature that you feel is more important to implement than this?  And do you not agree that this would be technically very easy to implement?

Let me share something with you.  I've been using Strava for about 3 years.  At first I got excited when I got new PRs and got ranked on segments.  But inevitably we grow older and less competitive, and even without that, as n increases, we are less likely to get new PRs (not to mentiion KOMs).   So the competitive features of Strava are just not that important any more.  It is now mostly an exercise log and, more importantly, a social site where my community and I can share what we have done, where we have been, and what we have experienced.  Comments and photos enhance the sense of community, and bring us back to the site.  If what you said is true--that your staff just can't find the time to implement this trivial feature--then you really need to rethink your view of what value Strava brings to its users.  There are all sorts of exercise loggers out there, but you, Strava, have a leg up on these by providing a full-fledged community for riders and runners.  It would be a shame for you to let this advantage erode away because you failed to grasp the true value you bring to your users.

If you truly intend to implement website photo uploading, then you really owe it to your users--and perhaps more importantly, to yourselves as employees and stakeholders in Strava--to prioritize this feature.

  • I've commented on this subject a number of times and finally got weary of commenting without any feedback from Strava but the last message from Shady John really reminded me, again, of how important being able to post photos is to many of us. He really hit the nail on the head. as a way over the hill senior citizen I still get pleasure from being up there on the leaderboards, getting some PR's, and once in a blue moon a KOM but the social aspect of Strava is far more important to me now. I formed a club on Strava for local riders only, something that none of the other clubs had done, generated some new routes, and went on a campaign to get more people out for our groups rides (and rides of other local groups) but the one thing that was missing is posting photos from the desktop. I share rides & info with riders all over the world and I am constantly asked what is it like to cycle in California, a place where we can ride year round, in the mountains, etc. Very few of our local members post photos, something that people in other parts of the country and world constantly ask us to share, we don't post photos because it's just too darned difficult and cumbersome. AND, most of us are using Garmin or other GPS, NOT smart phones. I started posting some photos and videos of our rides on YouTube.com & then transfer them to Facebook.com, the quality is much better than what people with phones post to Strava but it would be so much nicer to be able to post our photos to Strava. Our weekly group rides are more social than hammerfests although we do ride & climb hard at times, most of us are more interested in the ride than the PR's and we enjoy seeing photos of other's around the world also. Thanks to some developers outside of Strava I've been able to create our own challenges, an ability that Strava itself has never offered. I'm not going to threaten to dump my Premium Membership or boycott Strava, I find it it an important resource to our cyclists and I believe in paying for the service that Strava provides but I still would like to sees you add the ability to post photos from the desktop, for many of us it is a very big priority.

  • I'd like to add my weight to the request for photo upload via website.  It seems a silly omission given it can be done using the app.

I use a Garmin and usually take pictures with either iPhone or stills from a video (Fly6 or GoPro).  To add photos at the moment I load the ride via Garmin and edit it on the iPhone (after importing any photos into Photos).  Not that much of a hassle but still,  why not via the website?  Surely this this is a relatively trivial feature to implement.

  • why oh why can we add pictures from a phone app but not from a laptop. i use a garmin forerunner ten so don't/can't take pics with that i don't take my phone as its a business phone and i cant afford to loose it or the stress of trying to replace it.so i tag along with a crappy camera that i can replace quite easily only to be unable to upload them to here.

  • Seriously,

Give a good software developer a few hours and this silly omission would be corrected.

  • Stumbled on this thinking I could figure out why it wasn't obvious where this feature is in the web interface, and, oh, wait it's really not there.  Really?  Really?  I know it's the 21st century and all but maybe you could add this 20th-century capability.

  • Great news for phone app users! How about adding this feature for those of us that use a PC! It has been said over and over on this thread but still, goes unnoticed it would seem!!!

  • The inability to add photos from the website is just so strange. I would understand the opposite but...

"you could capture photos along your ride using any camera, and you would only have to transfer the photos to your phone to post them to a Strava activity through the Strava app."...

    Really?

A lot of people don't use phones to record activities. A lot of people don't shoot with phones during their training. It is just so inconvenient.

  • Well, the workaround for this is to post journey photos/reports elsewhere and use Strava just as stats storage. Like posting on social network, adding photos there and just including links to Strava workouts.

Of course this diverts great deal of social interaction from Strava website.

  • Also understand that you've shut out all Windows Phone users from uploading photos :-((

How about this for an idea: put all the amazing stuff on hold until you've provided basic functionality for everybody.

  • Dear Elle, since there is already a photo upload available for mobile devices it shouldn't be a big deal to implement photo upload from the web. Strava has become my favorite activity platform for various reasons but you should not forget about customer satisfaction while being exited about new features to come. Please consider my comment as a simple request to close this gap.

  • +1 for website based photo uploads.

I've been using an abomination of a workflow to get camera photos onto an iPad and upload them from there.  Now I can't even do that easily, as the latest iOS Strava app doesn't seem to want to navigate to any photo folders other than "Camera Roll".

  • Sorry - I just came back from holidays and I can't add photos from my rides via PC? And in the app I can't choose pictures neither from DropBox nor from Google Drive? What the .... ist this.

I don't shoot pics with my smartphone - soooo complicated. Maybe I should use stoneplates again... :-(

  • Nice to see how much Strava cares about their customers and users.  Been posting in this thread for over a year now and still nothing.

Open your eyes Elle!  This is something important to us that we really need.

How much longer will this go on?  How many more users have to post in this thread about how they need this feature until something gets done?

If you never use customer feedback, how do you expect your company to be able to compete with competitors when all your users leave Strava for something better?

  • What happened?  I can't browse though my photo albums now?  How on earth am I supposed to upload photos if I can't access them?

  • Well, this ignores the occasions when the photo is taken by a 3rd party and and provided as a computer file which I would then like to upload to Strava. It makes no sense to transfer high resolution files to a phone (mine is a windows phone anyway) to get it to Strava.

  • I have commented here before, since then my premium membership renewal has been due. I LOVE STRAVA. use it every day. i loved the extra data you get as premium but just cant see where my money is going if nothing else is being improved. I cant justify supporting a company that seems to ignore the desire of its users. (or is willing to respond with a justifiable answer to why this feature is not supported). No membership renewal from me. (besides there is a chrome add-on which gives all the benefits of premium and more for FREE) :D

  • Is Strava actually developing something? The whole development process is very stagnant with no visible improvements to the service.

I don't understand how such a basic features like uploading photos from your PC or more detailed and sensible reports (how many meters I have climbed last month on my hikes?) are not still available.

Did they fire all developers and are in maintenance/money grab mode only?

Maybe I have a surprise for you, this won't work...

    /facepalm

  • Please add me to the list of users who would like to add photos from their computer. The Beacon feature is interesting but is still not as powerful as something like the  "Real Time GPS Tracking" app on android. Hence, I think the ability to upload photos from a computer should have been prioritized over the Beacon feature.

  • "Beacon is almost completely superfluous.  Android has various tracking functions, and apple has find my phone.   I've done this for years already.

The only win for Beacon is that you can limit their access to finding you, but not wiping your phone."

Although I find the inability to post photos from computer absurd, Beacon is not however pointless. It's a very simple and easy way for people to track you. Other methods I have tried are impractical e.g. find my iphone with allows access above and beyond the job in hand, difficult to use by either myself/the other people or don't even work. This is clean and simple as it's integrated into my recording on ride on phone. I gather the feature was also very heavily requested.

  • Well, there are 280 comments posted in this thread.  I think it likely that around 100 of those posts have a mention of browser-upload, requesting that feature for PC users.

An actual thread in Support  for this capability are at this URL:  https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216931447-How-do-I-add-photos-to-an-activity-from-my-computer-   ... But that thread has been closed by moderators.

This request is not from "a few users", but I'm guessing the majority of users would like this feature.   Sharing is probably the most exciting thing one can do w Strava, and nothing shares more immediately than a photo.

@ Elle: how about a poll?

  • Hi

Please understand that many people, as me, are using not a phone to track our activities, but a Garmin device or something more advanced (which include heart rate monitor) that has no camera integrated, hence there are no ways of upload pictures being made with a compact camera, for example.

  • I think it's a big one for development, I'm currently running an old iphone with an old version of Strava so I can't upload from there even if I sent the pictures across to the mobile.  It really can't be that hard to add it the desktop site?
