To add a photo taken from a real camera is exceedingly complicated!
My iPhone will not let me upload the photos from my PC to the right "place" on the phone hard disk drive, in order to be able to upload it to Strava.
Instead, This is what I have to do:

    1. Upload photos from the camera to my PC.
    2. Send e-mails with attached photos to myself, only one in each e-mail (due to e-mail MB restrictions). Eg 4 pictures takes 4 e-mails.
    3. Open my e-mail box in the iPhone.
    4. Download the photos to my iPhone.
    5. Open the Strava app in iPhone.
    6. Upload the photos to Strava

That's a lot of hassle and time-consuming. We're a LOT of people here that would prefer to only need steps 1. and 6., ie from our PCs upload directly into the Strava web app.
I strongly suggest that you Strava people reconsider your priorities and ASAP fix this!

  • Hello Everyone!

I'm kinda new here - got strava couple days ago, just figured it's perfect, and then...

…OK, so pissed, but solved it for myself in about an hour - (haven't read the whole thread - just to get clues so sorry if somebody wrote it erlier) – maybe it’ll be helpful for people who (like me) doesn’t use phone supporting strava, using strava ONLY in PC web browser…

So, there’s another way using strava on PC… by making virtual android machine (example using BlueStacks):

1.Get android Emulator (got BlueStacks), install

2.Copy your photos (in windows) to Emulator’s shared folder (for me “c:\ProgramData\Bluestacks\UserData\SharedFolder”)

3.Install in Emulator any File Manager (Total Commander!!! ;) from the shop, copy photos from shared folder to default photo folder

4.Install and run strava on Emulator, upload photos like you just made it with your phone

...I’ts terrible bug, and I know - my method is also really crappy (just thought android emulator MIGHT be usefull), so

finally – I’M THE NEXT VOICE TO CONVINCE YOU STRAVA DEVELOPERS TO MAKE IT PROPER!!!

  • Humble suggestion.

If there are economic reasons not to satisfy this widespread request from so many members:

Why not make it possible for at least premium members to update photos from their PC?

I'm a premium member, mainly to support Strava. There are very few extras worth that fee. For those hesitating to become premium members, a photo-upload -from-PC feature might be a reason to join. The investment would probably be paid back in no time...

  • It's obvious the leadership / investors of Strava either a.) don't give a #$%^ about what's going on, or b.) have no idea how to run a technology company. Either way, someone needs to go and be replaced by someone who knows what the heck they're doing. Period.

  • On the contrary, the management team know exactly what they are doing. It is clear that they have calculated (perhaps incorrectly, but there it is) that features requested by customers do not significantly improve their potential exit strategy. In the unlikely event that (outside) investors force a change in that calculation, great. Otherwise, learn -- as we all have -- to live with what is on offer. Your only recourse, if you are a Premium member, is to vote with you feet.

Offhand, I can think of three often-requested and relatively simple-to-implement features that competitors support and Strava does not:

    • Start calendars on day other than Monday.
    • Upload photos from desktop.
    • Upload HR and related data for stationary trainer activities.

If I were a Strava engineer, I would have implemented these in a skunkworks, and offered them up to management as fait accompli. If this has occurred, it has not leaked out. Sad.

  • It is true that this has been going on for far too long. There are still only some ludicrous work-arounds like using Gramblr to upload to Instagram. This is a poor user experience. If Strava is intended to provide a fun and social network for cyclists they are still falling short with the photo upload feature.

  • If your backlog is filled it means that it is filled with features that are more requested than being able to upload a photo from your website which would be surprising ! Is it that your deal with Instagram prevent you from adding this feature :) Because since you already have all the mechanism to store photos for activities adding a upload button is a one day story :)

  • *** Work Around ***

Install android emulator, for example andy. First setup will require about 5 minutes, but after you will be able to use it pretty fast each time.

    Inside android emulator:

     - open google play and login with any google account (for example create new one)

     - install google maps as it required by strava app

     - try to install strava app too, but probably will not allow to install through google play, in that case download strava apk distributive file (google it) and install manually

     - install (if not already installed) ES Explorer and start ftp server, add shortcut on the desktop for the future

     - open Strava, login to it

    At computer:

     - set up ftp connection, use total commander or whatever ftp client

Now, the process of uploading photos each time:

     - start android emulator and turn on ES ftp server

     - start ftp client on computer and transfer your photos to the android emulator directory

     - use strava app to upload it from that directory

  • Dear Elle Anderson, or any other Strava representative,

Sometimes photos taken on a ride need to be edited before posted. Eg blurring other peoples' faces (for their privacy) or simply improving the picture. Such tasks can probably in theory be executed on a small phone screen, but most of us would need a desktop computer.

But the edited photo can then not be loaded into my Strava profile...
    That is very irritating.

Maybe you should start counting the number of frustrated posts on this topic, and reconsider the priorities of Strava. Since 2015, when this thread was opened, I have not experienced ANY development of the app, that has improved Strava (even premium, such as I) users' experience even close to what an upload-picture-from-computer function would!

  • Why can I not have more than 60 photos in my profile? When I upload a new photo the oldest disappear from my profile site.

  • Looks promising, except I'm not seeing the "Add a Photo" icon listed in step "A" on any of my previous activities, nor on any new test activities I've just added.

  • Hi Elle,

This is great news, brilliant work! The new and improved segments filtering and presentation of "my results" in app also looks very good indeed.

    Keep up the great work!

    Best regards,

  • I see that the version 4.4 requires Android 4.0 and above, will this stay from now on? I still have android version 2.3.6 but it works fine for what I use it.

  • Elle, is there a #hashtag system for the manually uploaded strava photos?

  • @Tim - no hashtags for photos at this time, but it's a great suggestion :)

  • And once again, the inability of others' to cogently communicate ideas in a constructive manner has me ejecting from yet another thread.

Good luck!  100 steps forward isn't accomplished without taking 1 step first.

  • @Tomas - we really appreciate your feedback here, and just because there are no plans now does not mean that we won't develop a way to attach photos using the Strava website in the future. That is what makes feedback forums like this so important. To answer your question about a beta - we didn't have beta testing with this version of the app, but it was tested internally. Regardless, we'd still love to hear your feedback about the photo integration on our mobile app.

Thanks again @John for adding your thoughts to the thread. We'll certainly consider your perspective going forward.

  • I agree it would be nice to add photo's through strava web, but it is a step forward. Tried it out today & it worked on my iphone.  But the strava app seemed hung afterwards.  I had to delete the app then re-install it again.

  • I just went for a quick spin, took a photo while I was out. Got home, transfered the activity from Garmin to the pc. Loaded the phone app, edited the activity, uploaded the photo, then I went to add a description to explain the photo and relised there was not an option for this.

    Feedback:
    1. Needs inclusion of adding a description to each photo.
    2. Desktop support. I'm very supprised this was not released at the same time and even more supprised there is no current plans.

A new can off worms has been opened.

    1. Enable #hashtags in the description. This would be ideal for events, clubs, challenges, etc.
Photos could then appear on the respective club pages or challenge page etc.
    2. Tagging. Tag other stava users in your photos. (require privacy options for users not wanting to be tagged).

  • They missed a step in the "Add a photo A B C" - for an Existing Activity you need to hit the "pen" icon top right then add the photo.

Interestingly the photo's I added seemed to double up

  • Thanks for adding the new photo feature! To test it out yesterday I manually added a photo to a ride and then i added a different photo to Instagram.

The photo I added directly to the ride shows up just as I'd expect, but the Instagram photo is not showing up. Is it one-or-the-other? Just want to know going forward.

  • +1 on using geotagging somehow. It's just a "nice to have", after the important stuff like website uploading is sorted out, but it could make photos more cool. :-)
