Strava's new white color theme - Tell us what you think

What's new in Version 5.0.0 on Strava for iOS:

Strava has a new color theme that's easier to read, especially in bright sunlight. We're excited for you to give it a try and leave your feedback for us.

Read what we say on our blog, Turning the Lights On.

  • I have no idea where and how your research were done, but clearly it is wrong! I absolutely HATE the new white background and it hurts my eyes. As approaching to winter, the day time is getting shorter, it means most of my rides are in dark and it is unpleasant to look at it. Even in the day time, I still prefer the dark than white. This has nothing to do with "get use to it", this is simply a bad decision made.

I am a software developer and GUI is very important element of our application as well. I know it is not easy to please everyone, but in this case, it is clear that you have displeased everyone. Unlike desktop application, the dark or light background color scheme is sometimes hard to decide and different people has different opinions, like IDE. But for the navigation app, it is not hard to figure out that you need allow users to toggle base on the time of the day. We sometimes are constrained by the budget to develop a GUI supports both. But if you have spent time and money to create different color themes, why it is so difficult to allow users to choose? Most of hard works are already done!

Please please LISTEN to the people's feedback here. Tell your manager who made this decision to admit and listen to it actual users. "Turning the lights on" doesn't means "keep your lights on all the time, even when you sleep". Thx

  • It's horrible. I've just logged back into strava after not using it for a while. I stopped using it because I wasn't cycling so much and goth bit sick of fitness apps, but also you kept bugging me about going premium, offering a thirty day free trial, which I could only have if I entered payment details, which is something that reallly irritates me. If you want to offer a free trial, just give the bloody free trial, if I like it, then I'll enter my payment details. Anyway, this is about the white theme.
After reinstalling the app & logging in again, I see it's now a horrible, blinding white colour, with no option to have the dark theme. Why? What possible logic is there in not having an option for dark theme, it's not a major job to allow people to switch between light and dark. The comment here from the strava representative is extra irritating. It's not a "project" to just put the option of a dark theme back in the app. Just do it for goodness sake.

  • "Strava has a new color theme that's easier to read, especially in bright sunlight"... 100% NOT TRUE. Strava's failure to resolve this matter given the OVERWHELMING number of NEGATIVE comments here is DEPLORABLE!

  • About 1 year ago audible switched to a white theme, and got the same reaction. They eventually released a dark theme, happiness was restored.

    With this type of change;

1 - introduce the ability to have either a dark or light theme

2 - do a/b testing on new installs

3 - study results of which percentage of users switch or stick, you can even prompt so that users notice the two options

Then there will be actual data to say which is most popular and users can choose to override to their personal preference, or circumstance.

  • I don't like it... My perceived legibility has definitely NOT improved. I'd like it back to black as this is like a big mouthful of icing sugar with no cake... Yeugh!!!!

you say carefully researched.... With who and by doing what?

    i don't like it.

  • I won't write anything new here, but no, your new design was NOT carefully researched nor tested. And no, you do NOT understand that this is not about adjustment period nor different preferences.

I hope your revenue numbers next month will make you rethink your blind decision.

Swallow your pride and admit absolute failure.

  • The new white theme is horrible.  It is hard to read and not easy on the eyes.  Plus you changed the font size to be smaller.

Not happy with your new look, please bring back the black background or give people the choice to choose for them selves.

I  don't even enjoy looking at strava right now.

    Not a good upgrade.

  • How long is the "adjustment period"? Longer than 5 days? Because I still don't like the white interface and still have no plan on renewing my premium subscription.

  • Seems the time change is close at hand, then most all of our after work rides are dark, I was happy with the dark background.

  • "Sometime in the future, we would like to consider bringing the black background back" Well, I have now cancelled my premium subscription and at some time in the future, I may consider signing up again if the app returnes to the black format.

I call total BS on "carefully researched". Show us the research. Not one of the 30-40 people I run and ride with think this is a good thing. "A common visual theme across smartphone and PC" is whiteboard marketing department BS with no regard to actual end user experience.

  • As many other users, I really don't like the white color scheme.

It gives a cheap look to the app. It's more difficult to see the separations in the feed and it's an eye killer.

Make an option so users can switch between light / dark scheme.

    Thank you

  • Unfortunately this will be my last post before cancelling my premium membership and deleting the app. Elle I'm really sorry that no one at Strava seems to want to listen to real life feedback from actual users of your product. Having been in the IT industry for 20+ years I am very well aware (as your development team should be) what UX is (User Experience). I'm also very well aware of best practice on accessibility for sites and apps something which the team at Strava either ate not aware of or simply don't care about. There is NO sensible reason for having a unified interface across PC and mobile. They are different devices and have different uses, user journeys and therefore require a different UI. Best practice also dictates use of fonts and colors. Despite your comments to the contrary you simply cannot have considered these points at all in making the changes you have. If you'd like done free consultancy around this before myself (and no doubt thousands of others) cancel our memberships please let me know. Regards, Lee

  • I was proud of my Strava app and shared it with new or existing cyclists .The enthusiasm is gone with the new white "wash".  If anyone has read Malcolm Gladwell "the tipping point" in the development team they should do so. A lot of cyclist never interact on Strava forums. They just started swopping to the Garrmin app. The problem is the same with myself, we keep both apps with the wish that Strava will revert back to the old colour schem. Once everyone is accustomed to the Garmin app you might never see these cyclist again,The interaction on the Garmin app has picked up tremendously since we got "white washed". Someone paid a design team a lot of money for a new design , now its not so easy to say we made a mistake and paid for something waisting our money. Of the hundreds o f cyclist in the Durbanville, Cape Town area we are still unable to find anyone who likes the new "white wash""

  • A month on & the views of the customers are pretty overwhelming. staggering how Strava are just ignoring so many peoples views. I have cancelled my premium subscription, I refuse to pay money to a company that treats its customers so poorly. Hopefully you see sense & reverse this colour scheme change  quite soon.

  • I find with the white background it is very difficult to read considering the print is grey and small. Also the white doesn't contrast well with the maps. It does well with pictures, but not with Maps since most of these are white as well. Please bring black back! Or at least that we can have the option of white or black.

Thank you. I otherwise think Strava is great.

August 15, 2016 - The day Strava launched Version 5.0.0 (which changed the "dark" theme to the "White!" theme) - is one of the saddest days in cycling history.

Strava is 100% misguided in its efforts. Strava is self-admittedly moving in a "trendy" direction set by Apple and it's absolutely deplorable... "Over the years we’ve transitioned from a skeuomorphic design - with an interface and buttons that mimic real-world objects - to a sleek digital look. This has followed the evolution of Apple’s iOS interface. And our new lighter app is another step towards a Strava for iOS that looks and feels like the iPhone’s native apps."

The new "White!" theme is the most sterile, unimaginative, elementary app interface I have EVER seen. It is NOT "easier on your eyes", it is in fact FAR MORE STRENUOUS on the eyes - due to a lack of one simple element - CONTRAST. Strava, instead of changing an interface that wasn't broken simply for the sake of changing and copying Apple's latest designs, why don't you focus on INNOVATION. You have always been MONTHS behind the curve on releasing highly requested iOs App features such as photo uploads, club leaderboards, and comments, just to mention a few.

Strava - Loyal Strava Premium members have spoken here on this forum - letting you know just how TERRIBLE the new interface is. You need to listen to them!

  • Any way you look at it, this is lousy customer service. This is just like the changes to default activity names.

Strava: "We want to know what you think!"

Almost every comment: "We don't like it"

    Strava: "We aren't changing it"

Why bother asking us if our feedback doesn't matter? All the assumptions on either side are pointless - the proof here is this thread. Strava asked for our feedback, it's almost entirely negative, and they don't seem to care.

I really think Strava is just angling to be bought out by Garmin or some other large company.

  • Well, I've already voiced my displeasure on the white theme and wanting the option to switch back to the black theme previously, and I've had more time to adjust to it, to see if it would "grow" on me.

I can honestly say that it hasn't changed for me and I still dislike it and would love the option of going back to the original theme.

    Thanks.

  • Strava needs to cater to all types of riders, therefore the app should never have been locked to just pure white.

I personally prefer the black theme all day, everyday. I am sad to see it gone.

I hope in future revisions the option to turn it black will return.

  • Only amateur riders would use strava during their ride. Anyone who seriously ride/run/swim would only use strava after trainings. Seems strava hits bottleneck on user growth inside the professional tri-sports community and now prefer to make it a amateur app. Come on! Then why we use strava? Make an amateur version to expand your market share.

  • This is a familiar story, it's just like the change to activity names that nobody liked...

Strava: "We value your input! What do you think?"

    Customers: "We don't like it."

Strava: "Great! Here's another copy/paste of the default blurb about passing it to the team!"

    (Nothing at all ensues)

  • Hate it. Deleting. This is not about an adjustment period. I can no longer read it without reading glasses. Clearly everyone who "carefully researched" this design was under the age of 40. At least I didn't waste my money on premium. This app is completely useless. Well done Strava.

  • Lee articulated this really well. Mobile and desktop are different contexts and Strava did not unify the interfaces, they just made the app white. My premium membership just expired and I chose not to renew it yet. I feel confident the developers will course correct and I will be happy to sign back up when they do.
