Public activity with private description

I would love to be able to keep my activities public so my buddies can see what I am up to. But I would like to write descriptions about how I am feeling or just random notes without them being public. An ability to toggle the description from public to private while the rest of the activity remains public would be great!

    Hey folks,

Thanks for adding your comments and feedback. I'll add this idea to my record.

One thing to remember: just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented, unfortunately. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While there are a lot of great ideas posted, we need to be selective and balance our priorities.

    Thanks for understanding!

  • I would like that feature. I came here to add it to suggestions and found the Sas Quatch post.

    Good idea!

  • I would like this feature. An older training log I have had the option for both public and private comments. I liked the public part to share with friends, but they don't need to know about the status of my nagging injuries or GI distress.

  • Ditto. We should at least have the option of hiding the description in the Activity Feed. That appears to be a recent update (an unwelcomed one)--at least for the desktop. The description is a convenient running log for me--and I don't mind people pulling that up if they're really curious... but to have it show up in the Activity Feed with every entry, and without an option to hide it, is another big disappointment for me. It also seems contrary to the idea that these are quick "snapshots" of our activities. Maybe we're in the minority here (because many of my friends don't put any description in anyway), but I hope Strava listens to this feedback.

  • I also would like the ability to hide the description.  Strava is on the right track with the suggestion to capture things like "How did it go?  Were you tired or rested? How was the weather?"    This suggests the idea of creating a training journal to capture the highs and lows, mood, fatigue etc.... but I don't want people reading my notes.  I hope Strava picks up our feedback and values the time we took to provide it by offering this feature in the near future.

  • This is very much needed. The biggest reason I make my activities and profile private is I use the description as a bit of a personal journal. I don’t need everyone to know everything I’m documenting about my state of mind, personal health, or whatever else may be going through my head.

  • Keep the description public and add a feature for private notes.

    • Description: I felt great. So easy I could have double the miles.
    • Private Notes: A taxi drove by around mile 2 and I thought about hailing it. Need to drink less beer. Nah, that’s crazy talk.

Also, add option to make heart rate private.

  • Love Levi's idea. Public Description and Private notes as two seperate things.

  • Yep, agree with Levi's idea. At the moment I have to keep an ongoing old school notepad to keep track of mundane info.... something Strava could easily replace

  • Came looking to see if this functionality exist. Strava should definitely look to adding this. I's like to have the title of the activity public but in the description I often put my split times for intervals and how I was feeling etc. Nobody but me really needs to see this! Aside from making more posts here that Strava employees might or might not see is there any way to suggest this?

  • @eric white. Only thing I can think of is that we all send them an email with a link to this thread. I will do it.

  • I am all for this functionality. It would make it much easier to keep personal notes on your training with the activity stats. Get on it Strava!

  • I would like to add my voice in support of this type of feature! I'd love to have a public post of my run/ride to share/compete with friends but with a hidden description as I like to use my Strava runs as personal journals as well.

  • Great feature.  This would be great.  Even if we could just add some special characters preceding our private notes eg. &&private note

  • Good idea, I'd like that too.

  • Totally agree! I’d love a toggle feature to keep the activity public but the description private. Would be nice to have all my training notes in one place: I don’t love sharing what I ate before my run and how my GI tract felt during 😂, so I keep separate notes in my Apple Notes app. I bet Apple implements this into their Workout app soon. Let’s do it Strava!

  • I agree with what has been said in this thread on this subject and welcome the different angles to provide what we need. I sincerely would like STRAVA to look at  another reasoning behind the need for what we are asking for.

Levi Charles  -------- POSTED A WORKABLE SUGESTION FOR ME.

Keep the description public and add a feature for private notes.

    • Description: I felt great. So easy I could have double the miles.
    • Private Notes: A taxi drove by around mile 2 and I thought about hailing it. Need to drink less beer. Nah, that’s crazy talk.

OR JUST ADD A TOGGLE/OPTION  TO MAKE THE DESCRIPTION PRIVATE OR PUBLIC  FOR A PUBLIC ACTIVITY.

ONLY STRAVA knows or has a better idea why some members like to make ALL of their activities private.

In my example, STRAVA will see how recently I have used a SEPARATE PRIVATE activity entry for the same PUBLIC activity..... but the difference is that the information in the PRIVATE ACTIVITY is different and more PERSONAL than in the PUBLIC version. WHY do I do this?  Because this is the easiest way for me to go to the GYM an see what I did the last time I was there. I use it as a note pad,... and associate it with my riding activity. I see no reason to keep a separate notepad in some other application. My gym activity is to support my cycling. So it is very convenient to have it in the CYCLING app.   IF EVERYONE who wishes to keep precise and important information in a note pad, to keep track of other information that would waste the time of their "Followers" to read .... does as I do. I think STRVA would see how important this is to us, and as our numbers grew, and MORE duplicate but different entries exists, and we mark PRIVATE in the description, STRAVA will begin to assess more accurately how important this is to members. ...... for reference. For me there is a lot of precise details relating to a combination of factors that improve the performance of a ride. Nutrition, Hydration.... to pick two examples. I noticed, by accident, an example combination of Nutrition, and Spinning on precise pre  workout rides has helped. I need a paperless trail associated with a particular ride, so I can compare different results on my 30kim time trial circuit.  AM I THE only one that has a need for the private notepad we are asking for? I sincerely hope not.  Until STRAVA see the benefit of this utility and how it is as important as the other "performance" enhancing bolt on items it provides, I will continue to use the TIME wasting method of producing a separate duplicate PRIVATE entry. To assist my performance improvements, and motivation.  I hope others will copy this method until STRAVA  accepts and priorities our request.

P.S I wonder and hope that STRAVA will produce an updated respond in this thread to let us know they have at least seen the latest  comments  - such as the one I have produced today. Or will it sit here for for weeks and months or longer unread. I wish I knew.

eg by updating the response made by Jeff will help.

  • +1. PLEASE!!!

A private note field is really necessary or, somehow to hide the 'description' from public view!

Post-workout notes, nutrition, hydration etc. all necessary info for effective training.

All other training apps have, why not Strava ????

  • Yes, I totally agree with this suggestion.... just makes sense so that you can have private notes about your workout and you can toggle on or off if you wanna make it public.... besides you could also have a public comment option as a default....
at the moment I am not sharing any of my workouts as they are accompanied with my private notes which I input when using Endomondo, but I have since switched to strava which is presenting me with this problem.
I am paying for full subscription but would consider stopping as this is rather annoying

  • I don't understand how this wasn't a launch feature and still hasn't been implemented.

I like to write a summary of my runs in my log. This might include swearing, venting at people who I ran with, or updates on some pain I have. With descriptions being public, this means I can't include any of this information in my log. I have coaches and kids following me which means I can't swear. People I run with also use Strava so I can't get mad at them in my log. My coach and teammates follow me on Strava which means I can't talk about some injury that I am hiding.

Instead I am forced to write a positive note and cut out everything meaningful from my logs. I have to resort to keeping a separate log just to write my actual description of the run in.

  • Probably too late to have my comment count, but I just changed all of my activities to private because of this. If Strava wants users to share their data, this is a must.

  • I concur, I have been wanting this for awhile and decided to suggest it today, and I see that many have also requested it as well.  I would like to add a description that all my friends can see but private comments about the activity that only I can see.  Seems simple enough to program so let's get on it.

  • Ended up on this page because I was looking to see how I could keep the activity public while adding training notes that are private. Kudos from friends are motivating, but I don't want followers to know all the personal details of my training. These details are very important to keeping a training log. Please add this feature. Thanks Strava

  • This is a desperately needed feature.  Considering the analysis Strava now offers,it's hard to justify this as only a social media tool.  Most people use it as a training log so it really needs some non-public note fields.

  • Any updates on when this could possibly be implemented? Seems like a super easy function to add. I used to log on running2win.com, which is a super basic version of Strava, and yet, even they had a private comments section to go along side the public comments section. They also had an optional check box for women to check if they were menstruating, for example. These are the sorts of details I'd like to add to my log privately so I can track injuries and energy, without publicizing to the world. Please please please consider adding these features!! I've been tracking this thread for years in the hopes that one day it would be added, and with all the new updates, this seems like the easiest one! I'm a subscriber and am considering not re-subscribing next year, but if this feature was added, I totally would!
