iPhone 8 and Apple Watch 3

Connection errors since the March 7, 2018 update.

Up to this point, the AW and iPhone were working well. Now when I ran on Wed (Mar 7), the watch did not announce my splits ( though the option is on). When I returned to the car, the AW app said Could not save since the watch did not detect a change in location. I realized there was another workout that I had not SAVED, that prevented this. I saved it and Strava allowed me to Save, but now when I go to iPhone to upload the workout, I get "Please Check your Data Connection". I have turned off/on Bluetooth, dropped my wireless connection and back, dropped cellular and back. Still same error.

Ran Say (Mar 10) and it tracked my run (very odd new display), but got 1 calorie. Sorry but a 6 mile run burns a few more than that.

Ran this morning (Mar 12), same thing as last Wed.

Something about this new patch "With this version, you can now record heart rate and time for your workouts with your Apple Watch" probably should have said "This version kills everything the app was doing before".

Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks!

  • After reading a lot of FAQs, I have uninstalled both the App on my iPhone and on the watch. I reinstalled them both, logged back in and still receiving the "please check your data connection" and still shows 2 pending uploads.

I am disappointed by this development as I use Strava for both bike and run to keep everything in one place. I am now having to consider what alternatives are out there. I do not like Map My Run/Ride, but they work.

  • I started using the Strava Apple Watch app on my Watch Series 3 w/Cellular on Jan 1, 2018.

I really loved the audible readouts of every mile and got use to never looking at my watch.  With one of the updates say a week ago or so, the audible alerts never happen anymore for either the start/stop or splits (even though both options are ON and I've toggled them back and forth just to see if that'd make a difference.)

What I get now are notification popups at the splits instead and you have to tap the notification to get the visual detail of the last split.  I really liked the audible cues a whole lot more.

My runs are still syncing fine, but I get a lot of extra alerts even the next day to the effect "your workout is ready to upload"

So it seems like a few bugs popped up in this latest update...

  • Strava, just go back to the version that worked, work on whatever new functionality you were trying to introduce and release it when you are sure it doesn’t break everything. It’s very frustrating as a paying customer to have a product that is getting worse and losing its most useful features, especially when wanting to use the audio cues at an imminent race.

  • I am also experiencing this issue, I reset the watch back to factory and reinstall everything and still have this issue. Everything else works on the watch (phone, email, texting) so it's not an issue with the watch/iphone connection.

  • I have this issue also - during the run, everything worked okay (not always the case) - at the end, the watch said "no movement detected" but it showed my 3.2 logged miles.  I let it sit for a minute and then it saved properly.

However, when I went to the iPhone app, and went to the "You" tab, and dragged down, it showed it synching, but then said, "Please check your data connection" and it would not, and has not, synched.

    Very irritating.

  • Same problem for me today.  The app loaded my overall distance but not my map, overall time, or calorie burn.  It did get my overall distance.  It wouldn't resync. I tried deleting the run and resyncing but I got the "1 pending" with the same "connection" problem you stated.  I tried going to the setting;hisitory on my watch to resync and tht didn't work either.

  • I've got exactly same problem. Can't save because "no movement detected" and then I can't sync either... Guess need to stop being "premium" user.

  • ran 4.4 miles. The watch transferred it to my phone. And now the phone wont upload it the rest of the way. I returned a garmin watch for this nonsense? Pretty irritating to have a useless app and a watch i spent $400 on that wont do the only thing i bought for in the first place.

  • I ran once and “finished” the run, then started and “finished” a second run. Did not sync the first run before starting the second. The first did not sync for 2 days. The second synced immediately. Now I have a third run that says I burned 0 calories and shows as ready to sync on my Apple Watch. It appears on my phone as ready to sync but then I get the message to check my data connection. The phone and the watch are paired. The Strava app on the phone shows the run with only the distance recorded on a separate page. But it won’t fully sync. Now what?

  • I’m having the same issue mentioned above. I have an iPhone 8+ and the Apple Watch 3 with cellular. When I run with only the watch I get the same syncing errors in the iOS app when I try to upload the activity. Shows a pending upload and asks me to check my data connection. Tried uninstalling and it did nothing. I only noticed this issue in early May so assume some patch caused this. Frustrating. Glad I’m a premium member.

  • I got the same problem with syncing my rides from AW. Frustrated as hell. Looking for other options.

  • I've been the having the same issue periodically now for a couple of months. Seems to be once every 10 runs or so. Strava, is there any fix in the works??

  • Same issue with iPhone X.  Anybody got a fix for it?  Hate to go back to Runkeeper or Nike, but will not carry a phone on runs.

  • Same problem with my AppleWatch serie 3. It cannot record my activity. One month ago, it did loose 1 or 2 first miles of my activity, now that. Too much bugs for a normal use. Plus i didn't see any interesting new feature in the apple watch app. For example, no elevation live info. Still no reliable way to import a gpx (strava lab feature never worked on any gps i did try)

Strava seems to invest a lot in the Social part of their apps but they should care a bit more about the tracking features.

does someone use another app that is reliable or need i switch to a garmin or suunto watch ?

  • Any updates on this Strava Support?  This continues to plague my running and bike segments. Usually, signing out and then back in will get the system to work but, now it is not.  Continuing to get the "Check Data Connection" with the pending upload. My last two races were not recorded because of "No Movement Detected"!!!

My setup is Iphone 6 plus with Apple Watch 3

  • What ever the cause this is still an issue. Here is my defect log for the developers (if someone at Strava reads these and can pass it on to those that are going to fix this). iPhone X and Apple Watch 3 w/LTE. I updated the iPhone Strava App this morning. Started a run with just the watch (left the phone at home) and had real time data during the run, distance, splits, heart rate and had both the audio and notification splits and averages. Ran 6.5 miles (first time since I started using Strava :) ) and when tapping Finish on the watch got the no change in location cannot save message. Resumed the run and went a little further and tried again, same message. Did this several times with the same result. Went back home and grabbed the phone. Tried to Finish again and got the same message. Then I got the notification that my activity was ready to upload. Opened Strava on the iPhone and there it was, overall time and distance, no splits, GPS or heart rate. from the Strava website I exported the run just to make sure I didn't lose it if what I tried next made things worse. I deleted the run and opned Stava on the watch, went in to history and sync'd the run opened the Strava app on the iPhone and had the Upload In Progress message which then gave me the Please check data connection message. I've tried multiple times to delete the pending upload and sync again from the watch and am getting the same set of messages each time. Turned the watch off and back on and rebooted the phone. Deleted the pending upload and tried again. Still the same issues.

  • Same issue for me, the AW app won't sync any of my activities, I get the 'no movement detected' error, then the 'Please check data connection message' every single time I use the Strava app on AW.  So far, nothing I have tried resolves this issue.

  • Update to my original post and maybe a work around to ensure good activity tracking. Since reading that a lot of issues stem from the Apple Watch being connected to the iPhone when starting the activity and then losing connection (leaving the phone at home) I’ve started to walk out to the sidewalk before launching the Strava app on the watch, give it a few seconds to grab GPS and then start tracking. So far, was able to track several activities without issue. If you look at your watch face as you’re walking away from your phone it will show a red X at the top that indicates the watch has lost connectivity with the phone and then for me the X goes away once the LTE has connected. Also on the series 2 my wife gets a red phone icon on the top left of the watch face when she loses connectivity with her phone.

Looking back at the few times that I’ve had GPS, data or upload issues I feel like I had launched Strava on the watch while connected to the phone, then lost connection as I left the house (and phone). Maybe this helps.

  • Ha,

same issue .... and happened to be on my fastest 5km run. Will not use Strava on Apple Watch again until I've been told this has been resolved.

  • From the watch app in the phone I removed strava from the watch, rebooted both the watch and phone, put the strava app back on the watch and that resolved my “no movement detected” issue for now at least

  • Mine is going haywire.  3 ruined runs and a ruined ride now.  Distances all wrong, time also wrong. Distances WAY out.  Please strava make it simple, it used to work ok.

Also, any chance you can set an option to use one of the watch buttons to start/stop - the screen doesnt like sweaty fingers.

  • Hope this helps as it has helped me so far. I’ve noticed after each update for Strava, I have to sign out on the phone and then log back in. This has helped prevent lost segments or the dreaded no movement detected as experienced in the past while using the Apple Watch.

  • Audio cue and missing data.

For the Audio Cue issue. Every time Strava does an update, I wait for it to update on my Apple Watch, then I restart the Apple Watch. This seems to solve it for me.

For the Missing Data issue. I don't think it has anything to do with the iPhone. I deliberately went for a km walk to the start of my run and recorded it on the Apple Watch. I discarded this activity, tied my shoe laces and started a run using the Apple Watch. First 300 metres, missing.

It's really annoying that Apple went this route, requiring every provider to make their own app.

Surely, it would have been better for Apple to provide the fitness app (like Garmin does) and then allow you to sync automatically to other providers for social sharing and tracking.

Strava's audio cues are great, but why does every developer need to reinvent the wheel?

  • I recently updated the Strava App on my iPhone 7 & am now experiencing problems recording my runs on my Apple Watch 3. It recorded my mileage & time, but when I clicked save it said cannot record bc “no movement detected.” The mileage showed 3.3 miles, so it obviously detected my movement. Eventually, I was able to save the run, but by then the time was totally inaccurate & the map was blank. (I was not connected to my phone when I launched the app on my Apple Watch.)

  • I have iphone 6+ and iwatch 3 and , up until last week all was well, now I am getting similar issue to described in other user issues. I got the no movement detected message even though it showed 7K run, then yesterday it wouldn't sync shows 1 pending upload and then you click in there hit Retry and it trys again but reports an issue "please check data connection", I have rebooted both, upgraded where I could. Looks like this is a known issue, any advice please??? it was a PB for sure and very disappointed if I can't get more stats

  • Hey Sean, sorry to read everyone is still having problems with the watch and iPhone syncing. I was finally able to resolve by deleting the app form both devices and then reinstalling. Strava will have all your past information stored, so once you login, you should see everything. Everyday when I run or ride, I hold my breath at the end, fearing this message again, but it seems to have resolved itself.

On the iPhone app, make sure under Settings...Applications,Services and Devices that the Apple Watch is checked.

  • I’ve already tried to remove the app from the iPhone and Apple Watch and it did not solved the problem for me. Still can’t save after running. Plus there is a big problem with automatic pause. Strava is putting the recording into pause while i’m Running.

I’m waiting a good price on a Garmin watch. Strava is not a serious software to pratrice sport. It’s just a social network.
