Add E-Bike to Gear and Then Default to the E-Bike Activity Type

I've got access to an e-bike and will likely be getting one, so I went into my settings, into my gear, and entered a new bike. In there, I only saw the options for road, mountain, TT, and cross. It would be really, really convenient to have "e-bike" added to this list, so that when that bike is chosen on saving a ride, Strava knows to also change the activity type to e-bike ride. As it is right now I will have to make the same two changes each time, and that's annoying when it doesn't have to happen.

I don't want to be able to change my default activity type to e-bike, as I still have plenty of good old-fasioned bikes which I will still be riding.

  • I have exactly the same question. I have both a regular and an e-bike, but when I choose e-bike, I cannot choose the gear. same if I quick edit the activity, no gear selection. however, if you edit the entry (full editing) then there is a gear that appears, but if you change it, it changes type of ride from e-bike ride to ride...

  • Same here! I would love to have my eBike added as "Gear", but there seems to be no such option..

Any chance to have this changed any time soon?
    Thanks!

  • Adding e-bike as bike type and then defaulting to e-bike as the ride type when that bike is used is such an obvious need that implementing it ought to be a no-brainer.  It would make it easier for those of us who ride e-bikes and it would also help to prevent accidentally allowing an e-bike to show up in regular biking leader boards.  It's hard to imagine why this has not been implemented already.

  • Ditto! I was entering the very same suggestion when I saw this title. Heartily agree, especially given that on one occasion I plugged in the Garmin, but forgot to go into Strava immediately, so when I eventually did, it was to face dings and flagged activity from irate normal bike KOM holders.

  • Also, agree with other comments.  I just bought an EBike for those cold dark winter commutes coming up to stay motivated riding to work everyday.  It would be nice not to have to go back and change from bike default to ebike everyday.

  • Bueno administradores de Strava, ya es hora que agreguen la opción de EBIKE como opción por defecto. Gracias

  • I'd like to know the answer to this also. Don't want my segments flagged for mechanical doping.  :)

  • I agree also, but I would like to be able to set e-bike as my default activity as well. As a result of commuting on my e-bike, hours on my e-bike greatly outnumber the number of hours I spend on my fat tire or my road bike.

  • I have both road and Eroad bike now.  Im really bummed I cant use Strava anymore.  I uploaded the ride and edited it to E bike ride but noticed I was showing on the leaderboard with a ton of new PR's so I quickly deleted the whole ride.  Anyone know of a different activity app to use?

  • @Greg - We can take a look at your activities, but you should not show up on the bike leaderboard if you've changed your activity to e-bike. Please write to our team here

  • I agree, I have an ebike now and would love to have all my rides for the ebike default to ebike rides....

I also noticed when I changed my ride to an ebike ride I lost all my analysis of speed and heart rate! *very sad*

And why not ebike leader boards as well? Then I can see all my analysis :)

  • Jenny, you obviously have a type I Ebike. The type II Ebikes do have a throttle and do not "require" any manual pedaling. Type II E-mountain bikes are not allowed on trails (at least not on our trail) and shouldn't be an issue on Strava but type II E-roadbikes of course are allowed on roads so they could easily show up in Strava segments for pedal only bikes. Most people who don't know anything about E-bikes are simply uninformed and don't understand the the difference between type I and type II (and III) E-bikes...and they certainly don't understand how much effort a type I E-bike requires. Seems the issue on Strava is we have to post our E-bike rides as such so they don't show up on pedal only Strava segments...hopefully we are all working toward that goal to keep the peace and promote cycling (of all types).

  • Back to the original thread topic...

So...sorry to post this if someone has already posted this somewhere else...but I just found out I can set my Garmin activity profile to E-Bike and it will post to Strava as E-bike so I don't have to edit every ride.

From the Garmin 530 user guide:

Updating Your Activity Profile: You can customize your settings and data fields for a particular activity or trip.

1 Select Menu > Settings > Activity Profiles.

2 Select an option: (I use Train) > Default Ride Type > eBike.

Also...if you are using the Strava App (not a Garmin)...I found a tread on this forum (I couldn't copy/paste the link but search "Change the main activity") that answers the question of how to set your default activity type to Ebike:

To change your default activity from a "Ride" to an "E-ride":

    1. Tap on the orange circle with the + sign in it to record an activity

    2. Select Record Activity

    2. Tap on the Bike (or shoe or whatever you last activity was) icon above the orange START button

    3. Tap on the E-Bike Ride

    4. It will say “Most Recent” next to the sport you wish to have as your default

Your next ride should default to E-bike.
