Activity Search Feature

I am starting a new thread, as many people asked about the disappearance of the Activity Search feature on a thread that had originally started about a bug about keywords within the feature. Is this feature going to be reinstated? Elle said on the other thread "We are reviewing features that were originally designed for athlete motivation and inspiration to ensure they cannot be compromised by people with bad intent. Read this letter to the Strava community. " But there has been no further comment. To me, and many other premium users this has always been a very useful tool to find rides and routes in new places. I understand the need for privacy, however we as paying customers also want these features, and we want communication from the company. There seems to have been more than enough time to fix privacy bugs and turn this back on. What is the status, will it or will it not be reinstated and what is the timeline? Thank you.

  • I agree with all of the previous comments.  The ability to search and filter routes in a specific area is great added benefit for possible Summit members.  We all recognize there may be specific privacy concerns that are being worked out, but if Strava could acknowledge and provide some sort of feedback that they are working on it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Using data intelligence (by looking at where you normally ride and what type of rides you do), Strava could even take this a step further and provide you with a list of suggested routes that you may want to try (this could also possibly be filtered by a list of one or more other riders - so the suggestions would be based on these riders routes instead).  And after you perform the rides you could provide feedback by giving an thumbs up or down that the suggestion was helpful.

  • THIS IS THE ONLY REASON TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE. I am a consultant who travels all over the world. Search activity provided me with safe established routes. I WILL NOT be renewing for two reasons - first, the removal of this service, two - the utter contempt for their subscribers shown by Strava by their refusal to comment o  or explain this action.

  • Looks like Ride With GPS is the answer.

  • In the past I used Garmin Connect and Strava to search for rides, especially when I was traveling. 99% of the activities on those sites were successfully completed by someone. Strava was better than Garmin but neither of those allow that type of searching now which is really disappointing.

99% of RideWithGPS are routes that people have created but there's no guarantee the route can even be ridden or run or is safe enough to use. But, it's the best option today.

  • Wow! I just installed Strava specifically for this feature.  I’m trying to find rides in areas were I can follow the same rout and have it guide me along the way so I can spend more time taking in the sites than staring at my phone... now I have to send hours researching and recreating routs myself.  What a waist up f time...

  • I'm a tour guide and ride all over the world...for myself I use this feature ALL the time and it's very annoying that Strava has taken it away. If it is privacy they are concerned about people can make the profile private. That AND they can also do the privacy setting so you can't see exactly where you start and finish the ride. This is honestly the largest reason I have premium...may pull it again if it's a headache to find routes.

*Currently in Bogota and looking for routes...and now this isn't working.

  • Hi everyone ...

Still sad here... but nobody at Strava give us attention...

So, I found two ways to workaround it...

A - Looking for a "segment" and then open each activity to find a route... If you had a good luck, few shots and you have done!

    B - www.wikiloc.com

Beside that, I'm going to convert my subscription to a free version when it expires...

  • If you just want to find routes, Ride with GPS still has a location search and a keyword search. It seems ridiculous that Strava can't find a way to at least correctly pull words from the ride titles of your own rides for a simple search. This is not bitcoin mining. Hire some *'ing programmers.

  • This is really annoying.  I have many friends that I follow and we share our activity data.  I know a friend did a route that I would like to do several months back.  He is happy for me to see his run and use his GPX file but..... I can't access it.  I can only see his last 3 or 4 activities.  He hasn't set the activity to private and is actually happy for anyone in the world to see it.  Why does Strava make it basically impossible to access the activity??? If people want privacy they can set their activities to private or block athletes they don't want to interact with.  What is Strava doing???

  • At this moment, exactly, I can't see anything in my feed, but I can see my own activities and my clubs activities...

I think they are updating something there... It should be working in few minutes.

In addition... I access a friend profile, then activities, and I saw his activities (all of them)...

  • Can't see friends activities in a Web browser. Only the last few. Would love to know how to see all. Can see all on a phone app but no way to download GPX from phone app.

  • Adrian...

First, go to your friend's profile... then, below the activites, you will find a graph (week by default)... You can click at each week and the activities will updated....

Easier, change week to month, and you can check all activities per month... (instead of week)...

    Sorry my bad english! ...

  • Rodolfo and Adrian,

This post is about the inability to search for ride activities posted publicly by anyone. I used to be able to use several attributes to find rides that met my needs. I've found activities in or near Derry, Northern Ireland; Singapore; Penang, Malaysia; Aprica, Italy; Oklahoma City; Denver; and elsewhere mostly in the U.S. It helped me find routes with the kind of distance and elevation gain I was interested in. It also helped me find rides with keywords like "Ride the Rockies" or "Gran Fondo Pantani" but that search feature was arbitrarily removed by Strava sometime in the last year or so. It was especially helpful in locations where I wanted to ride but had no familiarity with the area. I found many activities I could use to download a GPX file and follow the route with my GPS. Now that the feature has been removed, one of Strava's big advantages is gone. Very disappointing. I tweeted Michael Horvath about this today but I doubt if it will do any good.

  • Yes, I will NOT be giving Strava one more red cent if this feature isn't restored immediately. I'm up for renewal in four days so I'll be just going back to the free service since there doesn't seem to be any reason to pay for a service any longer.

  • Jeff, can you give us any reasoning as to WHY this is not planned? Why are you limiting the ability to search through activities, especially ones that are tagged as public?

  • Don't know what an upvote is supposed to be but it seems crazy that Map My Ride has no problem implementing a global search engine for members routes. Indeed their platform is all about that. (Oh and by the way the feature is free...) Stravas' route builder is still in Beta and the GPX to Route Strava Labs feature is buggy as hell. It should be at least easier to import GPX route files into Strava so members can use the Strava Routes to full advantage on their head units..

I am a paying member but there seems to be no real customer support or development going on a Strava.. Is there a reason to keep paying for a premium membership.. Please tell me why.. convince me to stay..

I think we deserve to be treated like adults and be given a proper justification for this situation since we are paying users.

  • Well if simple GPS navigation and route generation and SHARiNG is what you need then GAIA GPS May meet your needs. It has amazing mapping options and you can generate / plan routes and make them Public if you like. Turn on a layer on the map view and you can see all shared routes and tracks. Just not any of that club social challenge stuff Strava has. You can also download maps for off line navigation. I drank the Coolaid and signed up for the 5 year discounted plan. Meets my needs perfect.

  • Yep you drank the Kool Aid that GAIA GPS is not a cycling app.. doh.. Surely if you were going to go elsewhere for mapping it would be RWGPS  (Ride With GPS) They already have a searchable public library.. You can synch your Garmin to it and it's free... (Well for what you need it for anyway..) That's my go to when looking at new places on my travels.. It's just so frigging frustrating that Strava has the lions share of logging but can't get it's act together on a decent mapping app let alone making it easier to import routes from other sources..

I still have not understood why the route search option disappeared.. Its a feature they used to have..

  • This sucks so badly. I came back to cycling after 1.5 year break after my child was born and what? Strava removed one of my top most used features while exploring new places for riding. It's good heatmaps lasted.

  • I'll give my (pointless) vote for having the search re-instated.  Same as everyone else - you're going on holiday, you want to see what sort of rides people do.  It used to be great to be able to search on length of ride (distance or time) starting from near a location.

I thought with the Routes feature, there might be something there - but no, you can't even search for routes.  No way to make one of your own routes public (just in case they're thinking about privacy)

I've been paying them for Premium/Summit for so many years now - but I think the end is in sight. It seems all they want to do is add Training Plans and discount for products I don't want - and remove all of the useful stuff.

The most popular requests, Strava simply ignores.

So why waste our time "up-voting" for features that Strava used to have, but remove - or refuse to enhance. It's better to start "down-voting" by not paying for a product that doesn't deliver.

  • No communication when they removed the function neither any update on what happens next. Strava takes us for a fool, I will definitively not renew their so-called "summit" until it has been fixed. But for now: it sucks!

  • Thanks for this thread.   I am also interested in trying to be able to find interesting new running routes when visiting new places.  Here are a couple of useful links for people:

    1)  This page explains pretty well (for the uninitiated, like me) how to use the Route planning tool on the site (including the heatmaps), to plot out a new route (based on what seem to be popular running routes).

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918387-Strava-Routes

    2)  Looks like Strava is actually keen to find useful ways for people to plot new running routes (based on its large database).  There is an interesting new tool in the App that will create a route based on an area of interest you circle on a chosen map area on-screen.  Still in Beta and from my first experiment with it, it is still probably not yet great at distinguishing busy roads from pleasant paths (and ideally preferring the latter).  But as the article shows, Strava is very focussed on finding a good way to provide "new route finding" functionality.  (I don't know if Strava has yet advertised this new Beta tool, but I was able to find it in the App by going to Record, then the Routes icon on the lower left, then click on the + icon...and click on the Pen icon to circle your area of interest to run in.

    https://www.wired.com/story/strava-route-builder-for-mobile/

Hope this info is useful to people!
