Samsung galaxy watch strava app sync

So I'm using my new samsung galaxy watch which with the wealth of data in the samsung health app is working out great however I have also set up to sync samsung health info to strava.   Slight issues noticed with this, If i exercise in the morning, the sync is instant, great. However later exercises don't seem to sync until the following day.  Still its getting there eventually so no big deal.   I've been reading forums and seem to agree that this might be some sort of daily api sync limit. Fine Is it fixable to make it instant?

However Just playing with the watch and learning, another issue, this time I decided to install the strava app for the watch... All i can say is useless.  Each time I use it it records a few minutes of the walk/run. Yet it shows its recording all the way till the end.  It syncs instantly but only the first few minutes then rest of data is lost.  Any Ideas? Until this is fixed The strava app may as well be uninstalled and just sync through samsung health.

If you're experiencing this issue, please try updating your app to the latest version. If that doesn't help, try re-syncing any missing activities:

    • View the History folder on your watch.
    • Select Tap to Sync on the missing activities.
    • To confirm the activity has synced to Strava, you should see a "Sync Successful" message at top of the screen and Tap to Sync will no longer appear.

  • Hi Dave,

    I too have been experiencing issues with my watch. I use the Strava app for galaxy watch and recorded 2 runs and a cycle in 1 week not a problem. Synced within seconds, full duration and no data loss. Then the other day I tried to sync my latest activity and it just won't have it. Not sure why, hopefully there's an explanation or review of this as it seems to be quite a common issue.

  • Hi.. just bought galaxy watch.. 2 runs so far .. synced quick from Samsung health to strava... BUT ... pace (1k sections) dist, time are different.. how comparable are yours?

  • Also find pace on watch as I run is all over the place?? But reasonable when recorded afterwards.

  • Samsung Health (Galaxy watch and S9 phone) was syncing to Strava automatically without any problems  for most of 2018 year. Problems started happenning sometime in January 2019. Runs are recorded in Samsung Health (phone), but never sync to Strava. What happened? I did disconnect strava from Samsung Health, and then reconnect again. Did not help. Restarted my watch and my phone - sync still does not work.

    Strava app on the watch is useless. "Settings" has very few real settings. No way to set voice announcements, screen layout, etc. No Swimming app. So I have to use Samsung watch native apps. 

    Strava tries to get me buy Summit with a monthly fee. There is no way I am going to buy anything unless the infrastructure is working. 

    Will start doing some research on strava alternatives.

  • I also have the problem. I used my Wear Os watch for a short walk. When I came home, it synced immediately but says I walked 0.14 miles for 3:30 moving time. The map shows my entire route which I know it is about a mile and a half.

    This makes using the app on the watch useless.

  • I compared my new Galaxy watch active 's recording against one simultaneously done using Strava-recording on my Huawei P20pro, and they both give very close matching results, eg: P20pro = 9.43km distance, 405m climb against Galaxy watch active = 9.46km / 411m . That's for a short hike..
    Pretty convincing, I guess can leave the P20pro at home😉
    One point I noticed is crucial , on the watch ensure the Strava app has gps signal, visible through a tiny location-symbol lighting up, before starting activity..

    Since last update of samsung strava app  (v 1.2.3) syncing failed evenif i do it manually ... anybody have the same issue ?

    is it possible to extract activity from galaxy watch for importing it manually to strava ?

    It is may be a detail but i have the LTE version ...

  • I am experiencing the same issue as Christophe D. I am unable to sync my run today even if I kick it off manually. My Galaxy watch breifly displays "sync failed". I have restarted my watch, my phone, and logged off and back onto the Strava app. Any assistance would be appreciated. System has been working properly until today.

  • Same issue as Christophe D and Brad Clauss. On my Galaxy S3 Frontier I got failure to sync, tried generic troubleshooting like Brad's measures and only then installed 1.2.3 update. Suspect culprit is API change on Android 10 or Tizen and update is an unsuccessful attempt to patch. Devs, any thoughts?

  • Same issue. Can't sync since yesterday. In history I touch 'Tap to Sync', it says 'Syncing, please wait...' ,

    but nothing happens. This did not work yesterday, and not today after Strava update to 1.2.3 latest. Galaxy Watch Active. 

    It synced OK 2 days ago.

  • Same issue for me. Like Lev, i had sync issues, then updated to 1.2.3 and am still experiencing a failure to sync. I have tried multiple times over the last 24hrs with no success.

    Come on strava, I won't get my 200km october running badge if this isn't fixed!

  • I have the same issue too. Syncing perfectly fine on Tuesday and now today nothing happens. Tried multiple times, turned off watch and phone. Everything else is working fine between watch and phone, only issue seems to be Strava.

  • Same for me. Does anyone from Strava reply to these threads so we know it's being addressed? Frustrating when you go all out in a ride only to have the data stuck on the watch. I'm worried it will be lost when they either update the app or I have to try a reinstall of the app.

  • Michael M. If you install again the app on the watch, you will loose all the data. It has happened to me. 

    Don't know why this App is so buggy. But let keep writing here, so maybe they will fix this issue for good.

  • Well. I have just been able to one-by-one sync my last four runs using 'tap to sync'.

    I think it may have had to do with the date-time on the watch. I had changed it in setting to 'synced with phone'.

    Also changed date-time on the phone to 'synced with network'. This morning I changed the phone settings back to NOT'sync with network', and then 'sync with network' again and reboot, and now I can sync Strava again. 

    I had also tried installing Endomondo yesterday, but it kept saying that it couldn't connect to Bluetooth. Now that works OK.

    It seems that having a time difference between your device and the cloud or phone stuffs up the network connections. I think I have seen this before.

    Also, on the Watch Active, I can't change the time and date 'synced with phone' back to NOT 'synced with phone' because the setting is greyed out.

    I don't know if messing with the time caused the problem, or Strava did something, but it is fixed for me.

  • Try turn off bluetooth and connect watch to wifi, then synchronize the history.  That worked for me! :-)

    But still not sync when GW is connected with phone through the bluetooth.

    I hope they will fix this issue

  • Update: this evening, I got a notification of uploaded activity from Strava. It seems the watch spontaneously resumed syncing. No reset or voodoo needed.

  • The app now has an update in the Samsung Galaxy App store that fixed the issue for me. If you're still experiencing the problem give that a try. It asked me to resync the app with my account but thankfully kept all my rides intact on the watch. Thanks Strava team!
