Treadmill Running Edit distance

My Garmin watch does not calibrate to the treadmills I use.

Quite simply the distances uploaded to Strava are always wrong.

I don't want to create a manual entry as it won't have data from my heart rate monitor.

The Training Peaks and Garmin apps that I use, both allow me to edit the distances that I record.

Why does Strava not offer this function?

Thanks for any responses in advance.

  • Same issue.  Apple watch to Strava from watch on treadmill.  Incorrect.  No ability to edit.  Hurting my weekly mileage calculation.

  • I have come to the conclusion that Strava isn't very good. I use an apple watch.

  • Garmin gave a demonstrably incorrect answer. Since Garmin Connect exports the uncalibrated distances in their tcx and gpx for treadmill runs, it's hard to blame Strava, unless Garmin can show that the calibrated data is actuall available to external consumers.

  • I'm not sure if this is an applicable solution for all of you, but this is how I am able to log the correct distance to Strava after my treadmill workouts:

    1. Download the activity .txc file from Garmin Connect.

    2. Open the .tcx file in a text editor program.

    3. Scroll down to the last occurrence of the <DistanceMeters> brackets.

    4. Edit the DistanceMeters value to apply with the correct distance for your workout.

    5. Upload the activity to Strava by using the file import tool.

  • Same issue with the Garmin 935. I just delete the activity on Strava and make a manual entry based on the data from the Garmin Connect App (I calibrate the watch after each run on the treadmill). Like some of you mentioned - I don't have my HR data for such activity, but I prefer a correct distance/time. I just put an additional information about my average HR and incline% in the "Comment" section of the activity in Strava.

    Best regards!

  • A work around

Unfortunately Garmin saves them calibrates. In theory next time it will be right. But I’m reality we run different paces/stride lengths each time.

So a work around that I use is,

    Options on your watch
    Settings (activities and apps)
    Treadmill
    Treadmill settings
    Restore defaults

If you do the above, it’ll ask you for the distance on the treadmill like it did the first time. It can’t save it wrong as it has no reference from the past.

Do this before each run and it should be ok.

This could be a really easy fix for Garmin. It should ask you to confirm distance each time before saving

  • I have the same problem.  Why doesn't Strava use the correct, calibrated distance and not the incorrect, uncalibrated distance?  Is this an issue with Garmin reporting the incorrect data to Strava?  How hard would it be for Strava to allow editing of the distance?

  • Same issue! I go for a run on the treadmill and the treadmill’s distance isn’t the same as the distance on the apple watch strava app. Can anyone please help? Is there a way to edit the values without having to add any manual activities??

  • Same issue for me. I’m going to depend more on Garmin Connect than I do Strava—going forward. My suggestion to Strava is not to count indoor activities in challenges.

  • Someday - either Strava will fix their website/app to work for running - or someone else like Smashrun will get bought up by a larger player and take over the market.  Strava doesn't seem to care about running/mileage/accuracy - it's a biking platform that just happens to show runs.

For the record, I came here looking for a way to edit treadmill runs too when they show long on distance - if it's short - everyone just records a 2nd manual activity called "Strava Sucks" with the extra distance.

  • Sync from Garmin to Endomondo synced correctly. I ran on a treadmill yesterday and calibrated afterwards. The run on Endomondo was the same as the calibrated result on Garmin Connect. The run on Strava had the uncalibrated result. So I presume that Strava also can solve this in the same way as Endomondo.

  • I find this frustrating too - after each treadmill run I calibrate my Garmin and then save the activity, but Strava seems to ignore the calibration and take the original Garmin data, which when running any kind of varied pace (e.g. intervals) has been consistently wrong by half a mile on 5-6 mile runs. If that happened frequently, it could really affect total distance run (e.g. for weekly/annual mileage targets) but also makes the training gear mileage count completely useless - Strava could assume I've only run 300 miles in a pair of trainers when I've actually run 350. This makes me think maybe just using Garmin Connect to track my mileage, targets and footwear usage is better - why bother paying for Summit?

  • Strava please make it so you can manually adjust treadmill distance data!

  • Same issue, but surely a Garmin problem? Garmin is pushing the incorrect distance to Strava

  • If Endomondo is able to sync correctly, this suggests that there's a fix that Strava could implement. It is also clear that Garmin is asleep at the wheel, as it could clearly ask the user to confirm mileage before uploading the data to Garmin Connect and making it available to Strava.

Disappointing for each company. Both have user forums such as these, and no response or acknowledgment of received feedback demonstrated by either organisation.

  • It is strava issue. Endomondo display correct values and data come from the same garmin (in my case FR 935).

  • The same issue, calibrating the run before saving and Garmin uploads correctly to Garmin Connect and Strava shows the information before calibration.

  • Same issue. Calibrate and save on Garmin 935, uploads correct distance to both Garmin Connect and to Today’s Plan, but pre-calibrated distance to Strava. I have to add a manual entry with the extra miles to get correct miles in my totals for the week on Strava.

People who are saying it’s a Garmin issue, how do you explain that the correct distance gets sent to Today’s Plan, and in another person’s post, to Training Peaks?  That strongly suggests it’s a Strava issue.

  • +1

My problem is that I'm trying to move from Endomondo .. a bunch of the import data had 0 distance .. but some time and other data was logged .  I just need to go into TONS of workouts and correctly map the mileage to the time (it's obvious which ones are 4 mile runs, which are 5) .. but right now these ALL say 0.

Strava folks -- please let us edit distance!
