Treadmill Running Edit distance

My Garmin watch does not calibrate to the treadmills I use.

Quite simply the distances uploaded to Strava are always wrong.

I don't want to create a manual entry as it won't have data from my heart rate monitor.

The Training Peaks and Garmin apps that I use, both allow me to edit the distances that I record.

Why does Strava not offer this function?

Thanks for any responses in advance.

  • I run on a treadmill with Garmin treadmill activity setting.   But when I calibrate my watch after the run, before saving, the run is saved properly with the calibrated pace.  But the run is still saved with the original incorrect calibration.

  • I’m having same problem.

What’s the point of having Strava Support if they don’t respond?

  • Fair enough but Strava should still let us edit the distance for treadmill sessions. I have the same issue for indoor cycling. Yes, it can mess with challenges, but in my opinion, indoor activities shouldn't count for challenges for the same reason why we're having this discussion: tracking distance indoors is inaccurate.

  • Same issue. Treadmill says 5.2 KM. Garmin Connect says 5.2 KM (after I calibrated it before submitting on my watch). Strava says 4.4 KM. That's an 800m difference. Can't change it. Even after deleting the activity and reuploading the tcx file.

  • Having the same issue. I ended up just deleting the synced activity and manually inputting the correct time/distance. But it would be nice if there was an easier way to fix this!

  • Just started using Strava and it is kind of pointless if you cant edit distance for activities like treadmill.

I would have rather gone and paid for Strave summet then a foot pod that i only need for Treadmill.
It has been 8 months since this was posted so guess they are not going to fix it.

  • Upon reflection, I actually think it is a Garmin issue not Strava.
The Garmin device asks to “Calibrate and save” but when you choose that option it “saves” first (which is when I think it syncs to Strava) then it “calibrates” which makes the Garmin info correct but Strava info incorrect.

Either way Strava should still respond, but I think we need to send this thread and our issues to Garmin for action.
    Cheers.

  • In my case I am doing the save and calibrate at the gym. Later when I get back home I will upload my activities to Garmin and then the integration with Strava takes place. Nothing will be sent to Strava before Garmin gets it.

  • I also have the same issue. Furthermore the Treadmill Data is not synchronized from Garmin to Strava. Luckily I'm still in the free subscription period. Might have to look for another provider (sad as many friends are using Strava..).

Would be great if someone from Strava could provide a short feedback (postive or negative).

    Thank you in advance!

  • @saidou - not really....if strava just let you edit the distance then problem solved and no knowledge of file types etc would be relevant.

Treadmill stuff doesn't count towards Contests or anything like that so no reason they can't just make it editable....it's hardly complex to do, it's one line of code.

  • I have this issue as well :-(

I run on a treadmill with Garmin treadmill activity set. When calibrating my watch after the run, before saving, the run is saved properly with the calibrated distance. In Garmin Connect the correct distance is displayed. I sync my activities with TrainingPeaks and Strava. The upload to TP works fine. But the upload to Strava doesn't work as expected.. Strava displays the incorrect distance.

  • I'm not sure if this is an applicable solution for all of you, but this is how I am able to log the correct distance to Strava after my treadmill workouts:

    1. Download the activity .txc file from Garmin Connect.

    2. Open the .tcx file in a text editor program.

    3. Scroll down to the last occurrence of the <DistanceMeters> brackets.

    4. Edit the DistanceMeters value to apply with the correct distance for your workout.

    5. Upload the activity to Strava by using the file import tool.

  • I have the same problem.  Why doesn't Strava use the correct, calibrated distance and not the incorrect, uncalibrated distance?  Is this an issue with Garmin reporting the incorrect data to Strava?  How hard would it be for Strava to allow editing of the distance?

  • Sync from Garmin to Endomondo synced correctly. I ran on a treadmill yesterday and calibrated afterwards. The run on Endomondo was the same as the calibrated result on Garmin Connect. The run on Strava had the uncalibrated result. So I presume that Strava also can solve this in the same way as Endomondo.

  • If Endomondo is able to sync correctly, this suggests that there's a fix that Strava could implement. It is also clear that Garmin is asleep at the wheel, as it could clearly ask the user to confirm mileage before uploading the data to Garmin Connect and making it available to Strava.

Disappointing for each company. Both have user forums such as these, and no response or acknowledgment of received feedback demonstrated by either organisation.

  • In case you have inaccurate indoor training distance data from your Garmin watch (mine is a Forerunner 245), here's a work around that worked for me.

For my Garmin Forerunner 245 watch, when I used my treadmill, the watch had to be calibrated to read what the treadmill reads.

Today, I did a 4.63 km run on my treadmill, but my Garmin watch said it was 6.83 kms which is obviously a large error.  I did the correction on my watch after the workout.  I synced this to Garmin Connect and it was accurate on Garmin Connect, but the issue is that Strava doesn't see the calibrated result and posted 6.83 km.  This is a known issue with Strava/Garmin that has not been fixed yet.

    Here's how to correct:

    1.  In Garmin Connect (on a computer), go to the activity that you want to export and select the settings symbol (gear) and "Export to TCX".  Save this file somewhere where you can find it.

    2.  Open this website:

    3.  Choose the TCX file you just downloaded.

    4.  In "Methodology", select "Scale only (enter scaling factor below)"

    5.  In "Distance scaling factor (default 1.0)", enter the factor to correct the distance.  In my case it's 4.63/6.83=0.6779

    6.  Click "Submit"

    7.  Select "Export TCX"

    8.  It will give a default name titled "out", but you can change it to whatever name you want.  This is the file you need to upload into Strava.

    9.  In Strava (website), select the + button next to your profile picture to allow you to add an entry from a saved file.  Select "File" and then "Choose Files" and select the file that you saved.

    10.  The corrected distance will be displayed and your heart rate info won't be lost!

  • Since my post above I too have bought a footpod. I can confirm that it will immediately resolve the distance and pace issue. Cost me about $80AUD on Ebay. STRAVA still does post 'total time elapsed' so if you take breaks in between treadmill sessions upload each separately. My thanks to Keith Randino for the footpod suggestion.
