Define segment by start and finish only

Segments are the greatest fun on Strava.
It would be great if we could define segments just by start and finish.
That would make some orienteering challenges possible. (Over or around?)
In addition, in the nearby dense and well-developed network of paths, I always choose a few different routes on my standard runs to a local hilltop. With standard segments I cannot compare my efforts over the years.

  • Absolutely.  There is also another application, commuting rides.  On a commuting ride you might take different routes and compare the times, but you start and end in the same location.

  • I see what you are saying, but in my opinion, the challenge of a segment is not just to find the fastest way from point A to point B, but to find the fastest way to do it on a specific route.  Different routes between the same points can be very different and, as such, can't really be compared.  They are better off as separate segments.  You would likely end up with a lot of mountain bike segments dominated by road bikes that just took the paved road between the two trailheads.

  • I agree with Jason. I want to know if I am getting faster on a certain route. If I find a short-cut, I don't want that to count.

  • For some segments in cities it could be very helpful. A lot of segments are straight lines and due to gps errors I sometimes miss a segment. Although I’ve run a straight line. But my entire gps path was 10 meters next to it.

  • Yes and no, it comes down to how Strava executes this option.

Maybe some "gates" along the segment, rather than the current tightly prescribed GPS track? In defining the "start", "finish" and one or more "gates" that have to be completed you could take out the road cyclists with a gate on the MTB route, without losing the MTB rider that deviates slightly / has a dodgy GPS signal that eliminates them from completing the current segment in full.

I paddle (kayak) and would like to use segments on water, but the river is wide and the fastest route varies with wind / tide. We are allowed (encouraged) to use the ideal path but then it doesn't match up well enough with the GPS segment. If we could set a start, finish and one or more gates at fixed points (eg turn buoys, bridges, etc) we could have a leaderboard.

  • Its a request that has already been made in sorts as a point-to-point one but Ben's idea of gates in-between would make this theoretically possible... Would be a great feature!
