Remove "Suggested Follows" from the feed

Please take "Suggested Athletes" out of the Activity Feed.

This was irritating even when it lived on the right hand side of the screen.  Suggesting local 'pros' who I've never heard of before.  Now suggesting people like my old fraternity brother's daughter and others that I'd never want to connect with, etc. but taking up valuable space in the Activity feed every time I visit the page.

Please please please remove.  It's like an advertisement that has nothing to do with my workouts or those of my community.

Or at least remove for premium users.

Thanks

Mike

  • Please remove this annoying feature that suggests people to follow. THIS IS NOT FACEBOOK.

  • On my last renewal I downgraded by plan specifically because of this.  I have gone from a raving(paying) Strava fan, promoting the product to anyone who would listen, to a user of Strava who will not suggest it to people and is starting to resent the company's direction...  It is particularly irksome in the mobile app and easy to ignore in my pc browser.

I'm unlikely to continue paid service when my next renewal period comes up.  I'm finding that TrainerRoad and Garmin fill any gaps.  I started paying for Strava mainly to support the company not for any features...

  • How sad to see that this thread is still active and nothing has changed after more than a year.

It confirms to me that my decision to cancel my premium subscription was a good one.

I can't say I've missed the features. I took the initial decision to pay for preimum more as a gesture of appreciation and support for strava than because I wanted any of the extra bits.

But this strive to become another social media player, despite such a lot of heartfelt protests from paying members has used up any enthusiasm and goodwill I had for the company.

    No regrets here...

  • Still baffled by the this issue. Over a year of pleas from strava users about having option to disable the suggested athletes and yet strava still continues to “improve” but not in a way that we’ve been asking for. So sad, this will definitely cause a lot of paid user to go to free version, maybe our money speaks louder than our words?

  • "In Greek mythology Sisyphus was the king of Ephyra. He was punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down when it nears the top, repeating this action for eternity."

Strava. The reason this suggested contacts section is so annoying is because it can Never Be Cleared. People you X just come back in a few weeks. These are never ending items that require clearing. We Strava obsessives share a common trait which might give you a clue as to why this is annoying AF!
Acknowledge that please in this thread and then tell us again you're not going to bother fixing this for paying customers....

  • How many times must I "x out" a suggested friend only to see that same exact person suggested a few days later? This happens over and over again and is absurd.

  • I have canceled my summit because of this. Strava officials ignoring our pleads, like this thread, was just fuel on the fire.

  • Dear Strava/ please give us option to disable. This is an annoying feature. I’m a current summit member but have canceled my renewal because of this issue. Year and half and still no option to disable, even for summit members.

  • This ‘feature’ is very annoying. I don’t see why it isn’t hard to allow premium members to simply switch it off. Just because I cycle with Tom doesn’t mean I need to know about Dick and Harry.

  • LOL. Not only is this awful feature still there, they even "improved" it by making it an endless list of "friends" where you can X out names indefinitely while new names pop up in their place.  What a great feature. I can't wait to X out the same 50 people a million more times.

  • Hello STRAVA!! Why have support forums if you don’t pay attention, we have been asking to remove or have option to disable. How long do we have to wait? It’s seems like our requests are falling on deaf ears, maybe we should start requesting refunds or calling our credit card companies to request charge backs?

  • Can anyone recommend a good alternative to Strava without this annoying feature? How about RunKeeper or Endomondo?

I'm also a premium user though I can't remember why I chose to pay for it.

    What are the alternatives?

  • Have any of you downloaded the Elevate browser extension?  It's free and gives you the option to remove this annoying feature on your browser.

  • Yes Elevate is great, but the suggested athletes section is not an irritant on the web page. Easily ignored, or blocked as you say. The problem in the app is that it is always present in the feed and suggestions you X just come back in a few weeks. Even free social media apps like Instagram aren't as insistent about your network. This is just poor user experience management.

  • I would also like the suggested athletes option removed but more importantly, and for safety and privacy reasons I want to be able to remove myself as someone who can be suggested to others. I know who I want to know on Strava and don’t need to be “suggested” to be added by others, especially on such a sensitive app that tracks your location and activities. There is a level of vulnerability as a woman to know that your name is being suggested to strangers out there just because of a degree of separation. I don’t need that extra threat to my safety. I’m here to track my rides with the friends I have. I don’t need this app to help me find new ones or attract weirdos.

  • I think anhyi sam's last comment adds another dimension to this discussion.

Not only is it annoying that we get these irrelevant and irritating notifications but our details are posted to complete strangers.

I don't see how Strava are so silent on this topic and haven't shared a position.  Just give Summit members the option to switch this off.

  • If everyone votes on anhyi sam's comment (March 9 at 20:41), maybe Strava will notice.

  • Completely agree with Sam, it's a VERY valid point. Meanwhile I have downgraded due to complete lack of response from Strava. There ARE alternates.  BTW Sam, Ride With GPS is a great alternate. Choose your friends, make your segments, go ride, better mapping, better privacy, and they listen to their customers, especially when they pay them.

  • Strava has made it very clear this feature is not going away no matter what we want. I think they're more interested in the monetization of their customers' information than customer satisfaction.

  • Brad is exactly right.  Nothing we do is going to change this, at least at our level.  But, a few months ago the WSJ did an article about electric bikes and their impact on the KOM standings.  When Strava heard about their interest, they had a "media guy/gal" contact the paper immediately.  Maybe that's the best approach now.  Of course, Strava made no effort to fix the e-bike problem, furthering their "garbage in garbage out" stance.  Strava does not allow any links, but you'll be able to find the author in the blog.

  • It is indeed shameful that this has not be acted upon.

Here in Europe the GDPR data protection aspect, as pointed out in a previous comment has been ignored completely.

    Here are some links to guides to compliance;

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation

    https://eugdpr.org/

What is of particular interest are the level of fines for non compliance, typically for a global corporate organisation such as Strava being up to 10,000,000 Euros or 2% or global turnover.

Hopefully someone in Strava may realise what could potentially be at stake and also realise that the EU are very good and efficient at bringing prosecutions of this nature and in particular such a flagrant breach of the GDPR regulations. The EU could certainly do with an easy win paycheck and I'm sure a few of their faceless bureaucrats are on Strava and will sooner or later join the dots.

    It is very easily solved;

Let us have the ability to opt in or opt out of this. And that would include featuring as a suggested athlete in other peoples feeds.

STRAVA - Don't put your otherwise fantastic organisation at risk of being forced to do this anyway on the back of having to pay a hefty fine. None of us want that.

  • Hi Brad,

Out of interest when and where did they make that clear as I'd like to see their reasoning.

We should be able to manage who they share our information with and also turn off notifications we aren't interested in.

  • I too wish to disable the “suggested athletes” in iOS app? I’m tired of these appearing in my feed and having to erase it. I cancelled my summit membership because Strava refuses to address this annoying problem

As you stated in https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000141470/comments/115000451064 :

We have work planned to show Suggested Follows only occasionally based on criteria yet to be defined

If I may suggest: maybe "Let the user decide to turn this feature OFF" would be a good criteria! I hope you receive my friendly feedback with open arms.

  • This is annoying as hell. I do not follow anyone on Strava. My following has always been zero. Please do not suggest me to follow anyone. I use Strava for the sole purpose of keeping a record of my activities. I have already canceled my premium subscription because of this. I will probably cancel my account altogether since Garmin has all the data anyway.

  • Can this feature get more annoying?  I just unfollowed someone and guess who shows up in my "Suggested Friends"?? You got it, the person I just unfollowed 1 click before.  Just an incredibly stupid feature, please, again, let us remove this!

  • Over 2yrs since this request/petition has started, yet Strava refuses to respond, even as option for paying members! They’ve done a crap ton of useless upgrade like “sponsored etc with Wahoo” somehow they’re smart enough to add that(not sure how many requests they got to get that, err but probably lots of dollars). But to ignore the plea of hundreds of paying members, come on that’s customer service at it worst -1! I do believe we need to vote with our wallets, ie cancel the summit/paid subscriptions, maybe then they’ll respond one their bottom line is affected? Strava PLEASE put an option to disable at least for paying members! Otherwise my renewal is cancelled!
