Segment too short?

I noticed recently that Strava won't allow creation of segments that are "too short". While I understand the desire to reduce the quantity very short segments prone to timing issues - particularly urban segments - this is definitely not the right approach for off-road, where short segments may be very technical and slow. 100m snaking carefully around obstacles in loose or muddy terrain is very different to a flat, straight section of tarmac.

A more nuanced solution is required: perhaps one that looks at the mean or mode of the listed times and removes the segment if the value falls below a threshold.

Until then... can we please have our short segments back?

At this time we do not have any plans to make changes to the segment creation threshold.

  • I'll second that motion.....

Short segments needed for MTB & eMTB.

  • I agree! I just tried to make a segment on a very steep trail climb that takes a few minutes to complete but it's telling me the segment is too short. I'm surprised Strava still hasn't got on the bandwagon for MTB'ers. We still have no "dirt challenges", etc. Everything is geared towards the roadies.

  • Yep - this is needed desperately!

  • Agreed! Tried to create an off-road stair climb segment for CX today. Takes 45 seconds but is only 0.1 miles long.

  • Pain in the arse strava has made itself obsolete for Mtb segments especially the tight steep short gnarly stages

  • agree - this is really annoying when setting segments on very steep ascents - not just MTB issue, but also on very steep short urban streets - please add it back!!!

  • Agreed, this needs to be fixed.

I create a lot of "Zwift Insider verified" segments for Zwift riders, and the new Alpe du Zwift has 21 switchbacks. Trying to create segments between each bend, but there are a few getting rejected due to length.

They may be short, but they're uphill and take at least 1-2 minutes to complete. Strava really needs to figure elevation into their metric.

  • Short segments please, and not just for MTBing. I live in a very hilly area and want to time whether I'm getting faster riding up various streets but despite a couple of streets of average 10 and maximum 28% gradients taking up to two minutes these are all deemed "too short" (and, as we all know, if it wasn't on Strava you didn't do it). Surely gradient or time to complete could be taken into account? The GPS has no problem tracking my snail's pace on these hills.

  • Exactly my local trials have got new segments and no one can set a strava segment pick it up makes it pointless to even use the app anymore. Really short sighted. Most of my mates are not bothering to even use it anymore.

Was considering getting a watch and upgrading to premium but not now. Unless this can be changed I can see a lot of mtb and sprinters leaving

  • Given the amount of complaints about this on the internet generally, I'm disappointed in Strava for not rectifying this yet. Even though its not a perk of Premium, if this doesn't get sorted soon I will cancel my premium account to stop supporting Strava any longer.

  • For myself and other cyclists who do a lot of hilly offroad cycling, strava has become useless to be able to make up any segments worth using. The only segments I'm allowed to make are too long for me.

Since Stava changed to this, I've found I don't go cycling to new places anymore. I like to do a few short segments during a ride so now I prefer to cycle in places where I have previously made some short segments. I've stopped going off exploring new cycling places. It has changed my cycling in a negative way..

The terrain and the ascent should be taken into account.

  • If Strava deleted all the older segments created prior to this change, as well as all the KOMs for those old short-segments, that is all I have left Fandango 68.

The fun of making up any new segments have been taken away from me and seems to have coincided with me losing interest in training.

I'm hoping to get some motivation back soon and get some rides in soon, and at least I have some old short segments that I made up years ago so that my rides are interesting.

What sense at all would there be to take away all short segments, Strava has already destroyed an excellent system and made no attempt to be fair to offroad and mtb cyclists.

I used to be exited to work out new segments on my offroad very hilly rides. I would really look forward to them. I go where hardly anyone else cycles, so my segments interfere with no one at all. For all of Strava's reasons why short segments should be stopped, I was just an innocent victim of the consequences of that decision.

Why don't they give an option to make short segments for private rides, then at least I could put my rides private and have the fun of making new segments back...

  • What's the point of having Strava if I can't make my own segment to time myself on a great spot I've found? Really Strava? This is pure crap.

  • I see the point of removing the short segments due to gps bla bla bla, but man it sucks big time on mtb. No more battling own times on downhill segments or through some technical section. Man this is such at turn of.

At least make it possible to make a private short segment to be able to log your own times and battle your self.

  • Please allow for shorter segments if the gradient is high. In mtb there are uphill segments thet are only 200 m or less that are technical and can take something like 2 min. Strava is then no fun! All the old sub 300 segments are still there but it really sucks not being able to create new once for climbs!

  • I understand why the inaccuracies of short segments make them less than ideal for public competition, but they can still be useful for private training purposes. If I ride up a hill 100 times and my time gradually comes down from 45 to 40 to 38 sec, I know the occasional 25 sec time is an anomaly and I'm not going to kid myself otherwise. It's still useful to see the overall progression.

I can't see any justification for disabling this for private use.

  • "Sounds like we should accept short segments above a minimum percent grade." Would be great!

  • At times when designing / building / maintaining trails, especially MTB, it helps to be able to create shorter segments... not so much for accurate timing but as good trail use data, wayfinding, etc. Please consider allowing this option as it can be quite functional outside the social media for athletes arena.

  • Mountain bikers use Strava too! Many "short" segments that may take 1-2 minutes to climb have been rendered obsolete by this arbitrary cutoff. Please reconsider.

  • What the heck Strava!? Why can't I make a segment for .2 miles of DH on my local trails??? Y'all haven't even commented on this thread since Jan. 2018!! Get your act together!

  • There's a few old short road segments I dislike because they're too short and people using the Stava app on a phone with crappy GPS recording of points every 5-7 seconds means some people at the top of the leaderboard with poorly averaged GPS points likely weren't going a ton faster, but I never flagged them for the benefit of the doubt.

Short segments absolutely need to be allowed under certain circumstances. Either Stava needs to implement logic on short segments to look at gradient or average times, and if that's too difficult resort back to letting all short segments be created until you can figure out better logic. If it's too short and too fast/quick where it can't accurately be measured users can flag them.

By the way, did Strava delete recently created shorter segments? I made one around the time of this change it's mysteriously gone. Now when I try to recreate it I get the too short message (even though it's up a hill and long enough by time to accurately measure).
