Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • One of the killer features of the Nike Run Club app for the Series 2 is voice feedback when running without your phone.  It is pretty basic, but at least you get distance, time, and average pace.

For the beta testers out there .. does the Series 2 Strava app include voice feedback?

Seems like it would be a natural for segments and other information.  The thing I like best about the NRC app is that I never have to look at it or touch the watch while running.  I get voice updates thru my BT headphones each .25 mile, and the auto-pause works flawlessly on the NRC app.  I only have to touch the watch to start and end a run.

Hopefully Strava will build in these extremely useful features.

  • Hi all,
Before fight strava, should why "strava, runtastic, ismoothrun" announce a standalone app and until today anyone release it?
My opinion the issue is in apple OS.
Nike and Runkeeper works great? Mmmm
AW2 was a big mistake, Think change it or keep without strava standalone.

  • Any update Strava? I have been part of the beta program in the past but this time when I email to asking to join I get no reply. Is this because the focus is now on NB IQ watch ?

  • @Frerik: Yes, correct. Well, as for the health-app (I'm not using it) - it depends on whether you sync it with Strava.

The data shown is time elapsed, distance, puls and (what I believe to be) average pace for current kilometer.

  • What have people's experience of running using strava with the Apple Watch 2 been?

I get that the Gps doesn't work yet and so we need to run with our phone too, and I'm fine with that (well as long as it's sorted soon). My main problem is that even when running with my phone the run that strava is logging is massively inaccurate.

A couple of weeks ago I went on a 7 mile run - I know it's 7 miles as I have done the route many times. Strava logged this as over 9 miles so obviously the pace analysis was well off. It now looks like I have hit various personal records which I haven't.

Then a couple of days ago I went on a smaller steady run, just less than 2 miles. The distance logged by strava seems to be there or there about on this one. However when I look at the pace analysis ot shows a number of 'spikes' where I was apparantly doing 6 min mile pace. I'm a very slow runner, and can only manage 6 min mile if I really sprint and go for it - definitely wouldn't have gone this fast on a steady jog.

Has anyone else had problems like this? I have emailed strava about this but still not had a reply.

When you pay this much for a watch you expect it to be a lot more accurate. I used to use a £60 tomtom watch and found this to be a lot more accurate.
    Thanks

  • For those of you who have requested access to our beta app: We are releasing the new version of Strava for Apple Watch so soon that it's easier for us if all of you wait for the public version. However, we appreciate the offers and interest on this thread to help us test the new app.

  • DC Rainmaker released his Apple Watch 2 review today. I don't think Strava will be able to do any better within Apple's limitations than any other company can do. Here is the review:

    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/02/apple-watch-series2-nike-edition-review.html

I don't think we should be so frustrated with Strava. Apple deserves the "credit" for the issues with the Apple Watch 2. Personally, I ordered a Garmin Fenix 5. Garmin makes great watches and works with Strava.

  • @Jamielee J.Are you using the iPhone 7 / 7+ for tracking w/ Strava? There are major GPS related issues with these models. Read more over here: iPhone 7 GPS constantly changing in Maps | Official Apple Support Communities

I'm also affected by this. Swapped my iPhone last month, but the same issues as before. Now I wait some time, if a software update will correct this and if not, I'll have to swap it for so long until this issue is solved. I read about people, whom let their phones replace for seven times unit they got a working unit. Very frustrating.

Edit: So, if you have troubles w/ Strava and the iPhone 7 / 7+ it may not be Strava's fault but rather Apple's fault.

  • Hi folks,

as a part of the team who has de opportunity to test the Beta of the Strava standalone Apple Watch Series 2, I would like to share some important issues I have seen so far.

Last Sunday I had the chance to run nothing less than a Half Marathon. Precisely the Half Marathon of Barcelona, where I live: http://edreamsmitjabarcelona.com

I have to admit that I got kind of disappointed on Strava Beta. As you can see in the image I have embedded below, the difference between the real Half-Marathon distance which is 21,097 Kms and the distance tracked by the Strava Beta App using my Apple Watch Series 2 without my iPhone has an enormous difference. Almost 1,5 kms more which represents more than a 7% of inaccuracy, which is absolutely inacceptable. As a consequence, all the pace intervals by kilometer were wrong by 10 to 20 seconds. The pace of the global race shown below is 4:07 minutes/Km but the real pace was 4:23 minutes/Km which is an abysmal difference!. Obviously, that lack of reliability made me get very confused and angry, since I thought, during the competition, that I was having a much better performance that I really had. A friend of mine in the same race with a Suunto, got just some 200m of difference, very logic because you never run 100% stright and you always run some more meters at the end of a long distance race.

What I do not neither understand regarding the data in the picture is what does it mean the difference between “Elapsed Time” and “Moving Time”. I just pressed “Start” at the beggining of the race and I pressed “Stop” at the end. Zero time difference should be shown between Elapsed and Moving Time. Very weird issue. In fact the “Official Time” I got for the race organization is 1:32:21.

That being said, what I find very very poor, in comparison with other app’s like Runkeeper or the default Workout coming from the Apple Watch default app, is the zero customizable “watchface” in Strava app. What I would expect to be able to see or to have the chance to see as a minimum is:
    • Adding an ‘icon’ or something that gives both: the simbol that the satellite is being reached by the Apple Watch and the strength of that signal, exactly as Runkeeper does!!
    • Regarding Pace, speed, beats per minute, cadence,… (ideally by workout average, current kilometer, current moment) I would love to be able to choose at least 4 or 5 of these items inside the screen chosen by me freely in the watchface. The default workout app in the Apple Watch does it very well, very simple and very clear.
    • The chance to add a “lap” or a “interval” exactly as it does Apple Watch app by pressing twice in the screen or a hardware button. This is absolutely essencial for every runner when it does interval training, fartleks, etc.
    • Audio announcements: exactly as it works with the iPhone app or at least some kind of “sound” or “beep”
    • A breaf “summary” during a couple of seconds in the screen of the watch when a current interval has been reached. For example, every time a km is reached, it should appear a brief info of the Time/Pace/BPM, the same way it does Apple Watch default app.

Anyway, as I said at the beggining, please, watch out with the accuracy and the reliability of the GPS signal. This critic issue may obliged me (and I guess lots of Strava users) to change to another app.

I hope this little report have been usefull for you. I wish you the best work to solve all these issues and make Strava the best again.

  • Jamielee J. I have had similar experiences.  At first the Apple Watch with phone was working quite well for me, but then a month or so ago it started spiking and giving me crazy fast times and distances on routes that I was familiar with also.  I had to go back to using my Garmin.  Hoping the new app will sort all this out soon!

  • Does the Strava app on Apple Watch 2 also saves heart rate data or do you need an additional bluetooth heart rate strap for this?

  • Appreciate the responses from September 2016 saying early spring...and now "so soon". What is the release date? I literally bought the Apple Watch Series 2 expecting Strava to be up and running, went for a run and was sorely disappointed. Then I received an email yesterday about Android 2.0 working solo even if you use an iPhone....

    When will this be available?

  • Hi Elle,

Can I be a complete bother and ask how soon "so soon" is? I've been waiting on upgrading to the apple watch 2 because I haven't found a fitness app that functions good enough on it yet. I'm hoping STRAVA fixes that problem.
