Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • Fulco, maybe you're not reading.  We're after native support for the Series 2's built in GPS and not rely on the iPhone's GPS to enable us to run without taking the phone :-)

  • @fulco We are about using the native GPS of the Apple Watch. I guess everyone here knows, that there is a AW app, but until now you have to keep your iPhone with you to use it.

  • Maybe you should learn to read Fulco before criticising everyone. That is the existing app which requires the iPhone to be along. What we ALL want is an app for the new watch that means we can leave our phones at home. Pretty clear if you read this thread.

  • Your link doesn't provide the answer people are looking for.  This thread is about Strava making use of the local Apple Watch Series 2 GPS (i.e. not needing to tether with your phone).  That link doesn't suggest anything has changed.

  • Fulco:
you should read better! We all know that there is a Strava-App for the Apple watch.
But the new Apple Watch Series 2 has in-built GPS. So now we are all waiting for Strava to release a new or updated app that allows us to run/bike without having to take our Iphones with us. A STANDALONE app! Possibly with audio-feedback and segments-feature.

  • @Fulco de Vente - That's not what this request is for. We understand that there is an existing Apple Watch app, that has existed for a long time. However, the Apple Watch 2 includes an integrated GPS (AW1 did not), and we are awaiting an update to the Strava app to use the GPS on the watch, so that we do not need to run/cycle with the phone.

Please read the thread...there are 3 pages of comments explaining the functionality that everyone would like to see in the Apple Watch app that does not exist in the current version of the app. The app was designed for the original Apple Watch (which did not have a built-in GPS) and therefore requires you to bring your phone along on any workouts. Apple Watch Series 2 has a build-in GPS and we would like Strava to update its Apple Watch app to utilize that built-in GPS so that we do not need to bring our phones. In addition, there is no swim mode in the current app, so the choice is to use Apple's Workouts app (which can't export workout data out to Strava) or some other 3rd party app for swim workouts.

  • @Elle Anderson can you share what the team has found out in the last two weeks of looking into this new feature/integration?

  • ^That's the old app. Doesn't work with the native GPS of the watch.

  • Fulco, Strava has an Apple Watch app, but it does not use the GPS on the watch, it uses the iPhone GPS. This thread is about supporting the native GPS on the Apple Watch Series 2.

  • @fulcodevente - the discussion here relates specifically to support for Series 2 (with watch-based GPS). As Elle (from Strava - see top of this thread) has said, they are looking into it, but haven't yet said what their plans are for support of Series 2. The link you helpfully provided relates to Series 1 support (which requires that one carry their iPhone and the watch in order to track an activity with the GPS).

  • Fulco de Vente, that is a link to the current version of the app for Apple Watch. It still requires the iPhone to function.

  • Used Pear today on the Apple Watch 2 - completely independent of the iphone - works very well and uploads to Strava - it's a free trial for a month after which I will stop using it.

If Strave are looking into this - can you implement customisable display options? e.g. Garmin sports watches allow me to display Lap Pace and Dynamic Pace at the same time so I can accurately manage my speed. I would love this display option to be available on an independent Apple Watch 2 app. The Pear app proves the Watch processor is now up to instant updates.

  • Oh and I was using Pear at the same time as listening to a playlist on Bluetooth headphones. The processor easily handles it and an hour run uses about 12% of the battery - no problem!

  • Fulco de Vente- the app still requires you to carry the phone. This feed is about the Series 2 Apple Watch with GPS onboard. Strava needs to update the app to allow you to use it without the phone.

We're all aware Strava has a Watch app.

  • Cmon Strava sort your stuff out! This should have been supported from day 1.

I am seriously considering ditching strava and just sticking to apple health to track all my activity

  • Took my first swim with Apple Watch 2.  Need some Strava integration badly.   Lap counting works on Apple Watch 2 but can't figure out how to get workout into strava other than manual entry to transcribe the activity.  Since Strava publishes to Activities on Apple Watch 2, you also get a double entry in Activities (1. From Apple Watch 2 Workout reporting Swim Laps and Distance 2. From Strava publishing back to Apple Activities what you did)

  • @Fulco de Vente

Strava Apple Watch app doesn't even work if the paired iPhone is outside the AW2 bluetooth range.

AW2 embedded GPS is not recognized...

  • For information, screen lock is possible when using strava AW app with a workaround.

    - Launch strava activity

    - Press the crown button to go back to the main face

    - Swipe up the screen to the control center

    - Click on the water drop to lock the screen

After one or two minutes strava app comes back automatically on the screen

To unlock, just turn the crown

    I hope it helps...

  • @fulco Fulco knows what this forum post is about; it has been made clear many times. He is trying to do what is commonly referred to as "Trolling." He is just trying to get a reaction out of people, and it is taking away from the discussion of this feature that we all very much would like to see.

  • Just like everyone else here, I would love native GPS and swim support for the Apple Watch (series 2.) Currently there is another app that uses the Apple Watch's GPS and automatically syncs to Strava (PEACH), but there is no support nor connected app for swimming.

  • It's been mentioned in two different posts that Pear Sports has the ability to sync runs to Strava.  I can't find any way to do this and there's nothing on Pear's site.  Anyone know how this is done?  Thanks

  • Finally back running this evening after quite a while out injured and got chance to use my shiny new watch !

I would love to have used strava but it's not really practical to take an iphone plus out on a run ! so i had to make do with apple activity

I didnt read all of the messages earlier but there is a way to get the data into strava but you can't get the map data. if you are happy to just get heart rata, splits etc then you can download an app called spectarun workouts.. you then load the app and it pulls the activity data automatically, this can then be exported as a tcx onto your computer and then upload it to the strava website..

apologies if someone has already mentioned this

  • Hi Strava

The metrics now available on Apple Watch series 2 are everything I need, essentially, distance, time, current pace and average pace. If you could replicate that on your updated app it would be fantastic. Other threads on Strava iPhone performance have mentioned that the notifications which deliver average pace do not always come through on the watch, therefore if, like Apple you could include these metrics on the watch face, everyone is a winner. I look forward to the updated app with GPS

    Kind regards

  • Unfortunately no updates from the Strava end in regard to supporting the native GPS on the Apple Watch.

As has been previously cleared up, you can still use the Strava app on the Apple Watch but you need to bring your phone with you.

I would also be curious to hear more about the Pear app and the ability to sync to Strava if anyone cares to share!

Stay tuned, and know that this thread will be the first to know of any developments.

  • Elle .. Strava is listed as a "Connected Partner App" in the Pear app, much like it is in other apps.  Once you complete a run, the watch syncs to the Pear app, and then in a few minutes it syncs to Strava.  The Pear app appears to not be doing any smoothing of the GPS track, as it is somewhat all over the place after syncing to Strava.  The funky GPS track also seems to result in a greater distance on Strava, and thus a lower average pace.

Here is today's run using the Pear app and then auto-synced to Strava.  This run was more like 5.5 miles, than the 5.7 reported in Strava:

    https://www.strava.com/activities/751518696

Here is a link to the Pear app.  I have been using it for a few weeks on all of my runs with Series 2.  It is stable, but has the drawbacks listed above.  Also, if you hit pause on a run, you lose all of the map/gps data prior to the pause.

Here is a screen shot of the Pear app where you connect to your Strava account:
