Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • Had my 1st Pear watch only run this week.

The GUI it's ok, all data incl. evaluation and map will be recorded and youncan sync to Strava. But my 8k run synced only 1.4k to Strava. Didn't looked into it right now, butnguess it's fixable.

What me sucks is that the buttons don't work for pausing and resuming the training. You have to swipe the screen and click the icon. Really hard during running wit a pace of 12 - 16km/h.

Using GPS watches (Timex, Garmin, Polar) since years as a semiprofessionell runner. For the apple watch the killer running app is still missing. If Strava or an other vendor will deliver one I'll see hard times for Polar and Garmin coming.

BTW: Used for my 26k run today the apple workout app, supports the buttons and this is more important for me than evaluation and easy Strava sync.

workout/health data can be synced to Strava using steak workout (no evaluation, map data and you have 1st to export a .tcx and import into Strava than). Good enough for the moment for me until someone offer a better app.

  • Thanks for sharing @Bob and @Carsten. Very helpful.

That is correct that Strava doesn't smooth the data from an uploaded file. To me, the activity you linked to looks like typical GPS accuracy issues, where the signal strength is weak or the GPS is only connected to a minimum number of satellites.

  • I'm brand new to Strava... recorded my first ride today.  Love the app.  I ordered an Apple Watch 2 series last week figuring that it would be compatible to Strava, but just now learned it's not.  To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.   Consider this another vote for lyncing the two!   And an update from your Oct 3 Official Comment would be greatly appreciated!

  • can we get a little more product roadmap/plan info here please? "looking into" isn't helping. just got my Apple Series 2 watch and am now considering other, non-strava, options for the first time since... well... strava :).

this obviously isn't a technical challenge, but I'm curious if Apple won't permit Strava from doing this, in favor of cramming people into their own Activity app.

  • Just bought my Apple Watch 2 (AW2) today and was excited to go for my run for the first time without having to hold my iPhone! Tried using the Strava app and it would not work without the iPhone... I had to resort to using the native Apple Workout app on the AW2, but unfortunately I can't upload it to Strava easily :(.

My friends and I all use Strava to track our progress for our 2017 Marathon that we are all going to run together. I am looking forward to an updated Apple Watch Strava app that doesn't require an iPhone to track a workout!

Keep up the great work Strava Developers and I hope a new version comes out soon :D

  • Honestly, at this point, if @Strava just enabled the ability to read Apple Health's Workouts (same as MFP, Garmin, etc.), I'd be happy as a temporary fix. If we could sync between @Garmin and @Strava apps before, I don't see why this would be difficult. Right now, when using my new Apple Watch though, the @Strava app is worthless to me. I'm not going to run with my phone.

If @Strava doesn't update soon, I'll be cancelling my @Strava subscription and moving along to something like Runkeeper, who has already updated their app...

  • New app out today (v5.5.0). Sadly it does not look like it will offer what we are looking for. :(

  • At this point I don't know what to suggest - is there a phone support line we can call? because this forum is fucking useless

  • Why bother having a forum when the people from Strava refuse to participate in the conversation in any meaningful way?

  • Come on Strava, I convinced my friends Strava was the way forward and they moved away from run keeper!
They are now considering moving back!
    At least update us???

  • I tried Pear and I'm fairly disappointed. Interface is poor and it's hard to know which click means start (it's actually the question about Bluetooth headphone support). First run tracked ok but had to use Strava to crop it as start and end were wrong. Second run sort of tracked. Came up as zero kilometres but if i go into Pear I can see my route. Strava has nothing. Heart rate info also missing but on Apple Heath the average heart rate is recorded so I think this app is pretty much and alpha product at the moment. With that in mind I will temporarily go back to Fitbit with Strava which does generally work.

  • Did someone say Runkeeper had updated their app to use the Apple watch 2 gps?

They haven't yet either i'm afraid, as although I use Strava to keep all my running data, I find RK far better, and if they come back quicker with the gps working on the watch, they will win my vote!

  • Any news Strava? Hoping for at least the ability to sync swims from my Apple Watch 2 with the rest of my Strava workouts!

  • I've cancelled my Apple Watch order until I know that Strava will support it without using your phone. Is there a possibility that it will be supported before the end of November?

  • Seriously Strava - can you please provide an indication of your plans with regards the Apple Watch 2. I can't imagine what strategic advantage you would lose if you confirmed your plans, given that Pear already run native on the watch. Try to imagine how frustrating this is to your Apple Watch 2 owning user base? Let me give you a clue - ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING!!!!

  • Just so you all know, while we wait for Strava :) Nike released their standalone app today. You can use it, then use an app called RunGap to sync to Strava. Tried it tonight and it worked for me.

  • FYI - Nike released an updated version of their Nike+ Run Club app today with support for the watch's built-in GPS. I'm hoping that means other apps will get updated soon.

  • Others have mentioned that Runkeeper supports Apple Watch 2 GPS.  I've not found this published anywhere, and in my tests, that's not the case. Anyone else?

  • Well, Nike did it!
Today (Friday) the Nike AW2 will is released, so they updated the Nike NRC App. Now you can use it without the need to carry your Iphone with you. It works with the watch's GPS. Actually it's a very basic app but it works.

Now Strava and other companies (Runtastic, Runkeeper, Endomondo, ...) are challenged.
Every day they don't update their app might be the day a customer leaves and changes to Nike.

  • Sorry folks, you know the deal. When we are ready to release news about Strava and the Apple Watch 2 standalone GPS app, you'll be first to hear about it. In the meantime, we're making progress on this topic at Strava HQ, so thanks for your patience.

  • While we can all complain about this, it's the fact that Nike has now launched this feature that will have kicked Strava developers into higher gear. About time too.
