Private by Default does not work from iPhone App

The web based security settings under https://www.strava.com/settings/privacy  have a setting to make all activity private by default.  I have had this checked since I first started using Strava.  Imagine my surprise when someone told me how far I was running each week and when I asked how they knew that they showed my my running summary from their phone!  From what I can tell the iPhone app ignores this setting and I am supposed to click the lock icon every time I upload a run.  Is this true??  This is very misleading.

  • I agree with your comment Martin. This is a ridiculous situation.  Many users are going to use the app to record and upload activity.  Surely the lock should be closed by default in the app?  At least there should be an option to have it closed by default.

  • I have my data being sent from Fitbit to Strava, and it also ignores this setting. In fact, it seems to reset the setting, as when I go back into settings on the web, the "Private by default" checkbox is unchecked.

  • There seems to be a few issues with the Private by Default setting. I've experimented with it and found that when I make a single activity public (using the iPhone app), Strava then changes the default setting back to "Off". This pretty much defeats the entire purpose of this option as I cannot trust it.
