Create a Route and send to Strava Mobile App for navigation

Hi Strava, I'm not sure if this have previously been discussed but its a feature upgrade that personally I would find very helpful.

I've recently noticed that one of your competitors has the ability to create a route on their webpage on a PC and then send this route to the iPhone app. I can then ride the route using the map displayed with the route shown and my current position using the iPhone's GPS facility.

Quite often I plan a route before a ride but have to stop to check a map app. I know your app has the option of displaying the map and the route you have already ridden but have you considered/ is it possible for a predetermined route to be displayed?

Many thanks

    Thanks for the feedback all!

I'll be sure to pass along the questions regarding audio announcements for route navigation. I'm not sure if that a planned feature or not.

As the recent mobile release fulfilled much of this feature suggestion by bringing Strava Routes to the mobile app (except audio navigation), please now direct your comments and votes to this feature forum found here:

    Thanks!

  • I second the original post. I'm looking at Strava after using mmr for a few years. Strava appears to have more riders in my area but I wouldn't switch because of the lack of map building capability. Also, the fact that Strava's iPhone app doesn't display current speed makes the app useless during a ride (need to maintain speed during a group ride). So, I've resorted to using Cyclemeter and export/import each ride. This is quickly getting old.

  • I agree with the original post! Have been using MMR, but Strava seems to get better user feedback. However, have recently registered and cannot find anywhere to plan a ride (and elevation) in advance. Is this feature really missing? If so, that's a massive omission! Am I missing something very, very basic?

  • I am in precisely the same situation. I am new to the area I live in and am unfamiliar with the roads and would love to plan a route prior to riding, hence using MMR rather than Strava.

  • I rode 14 miles with a friend this weekend, and because i have a small pack I couldn't fit my new phone anywhere to track it.  Would love the ability to show my route in the manual entry!  Other sites give you that option.

  • Strava have confirmed to me that there is no feature to plan a route (and elevation) before hand, then follow it on your bike. That makes Strava pretty useless for me, I think. Just can't see why you wouldn't build this feature in!

  • That's a real shame as it's a feature I'm sure so many people would use. One of strava's latest challenges is to get out and ride the route less travelled or one you wouldn't normally take. For most of us fitting training or just the enjoyment of cycling around work/ family commitments and therefore a premium on time it would prevent either getting lost or stopping every once in a while to check a map! It seems such a basic feature - I've stopped using the premium service as its usefulness is questionable!

  • Seems Strava is fine if you have the right Garmin, but of limited value for Iphone users. Glad I only paid for a months premium service, won't be wasting $6 doing that again.

  • My phone died before I finished riding today, so I just came to map out the rest of my ride.  It appears I can't do it.  That's stupit. I have to map it on mmr.

  • Add me to the chorus. Inability to map a route ahead of time is a deal breaker in terms of renewing for premium service.

  • Following my original post I've been trying to find a turn by turn sat nav for cyclists where you upload a route and follow it whilst out riding, but using an iphone. I very nearly gave up and came close to buying a Garmin 800/810 which I know does this but I couldn't really justify the money. Finally found a way around it using a map routing program, Dropbox and a satnav called Navigon (costs about £20 - cheaper than a Garmin but owned by Garmin) This link is to a motorbike forum which explains it far better than I could. It's a little bit time consuming to plan the route but it works. If you have any questions I will try to help but I think most have been covered in this forum http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=874100

  • I've found Cyclemeter the most reliable for following a route on iPhone.  It won't give you turn by turn directions, but it's easy to glance down to see when the next turn is coming on the map.  I would love for Strava to have this feature, because using both apps simultaneously really kills the battery.  It would be great if you could just import a .gpx file into Strava and see the route on the map (like you can do in Cyclemeter).

  • alternative is to export gpx (email or copy to your phone) and install google 'mytracks' on Android. You can then navigate your GPX route this way and have strava track in the background. MMR was a total disaster, and I hope Strava look to this feature in the future.

  • Really, Strava doesn't have this feature.  My friends told me about this so I decided to try it out.  I'm a MMR user and like it.  Done two rides with Strava and it's nice.  So I have a charity ride tomorrow and decided to use Strava to map out the route.  After spending quite some time mapping the route I soon realized I was unable to view it on my phone.  Real bummer. I will try what Mike Heiss suggested.  Hope that works.  Thanks!

  • Hi Folks,

Our Route Builder is still in Beta so there are definitely some bugs to work out and features to build. We would like to work towards integrating Routes on our mobile app and appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Also, the best way to help us make our routes and maps better is to go back to the Route Builder and report the problem using the error reporting tool (represented by a small pin icon with an exclamation point in the bottom left corner of the Route Builder). There you can specify the exact point on the map where you see a problem and share additional information about the specific problem you found. We'll use those error reports to improve our basemap in quarterly updates.

Thanks for all of your feedback!

  • I'm an iPhone/MMR user and had heard good things about Strava so I though I would check it out.  Frankly, I'm astonished that it doesn't support upload of maps to the iPhone app.  Not buying a Garmin, so I guess I'll not be switching to Strava.  Kind of wish there was some up-front information saying "iPhone users: Don't bother."  Would save us some time.

  • Thanks for the update Ashley!  I really like the look of the Route Builder so far.  Do you have any idea when Routes on the mobile app might be available?

  • There is no current timeline for Strava Routes to be available on our mobile app, but it's something we're hoping to provide someday!

  • Just signed up, created my routes to and from work only to discover that I can't select them from my iphone. If I cannot do this I don't think I've got a reason to use the route builder.

I should be able to use it to:

     A) put all my commutes to and from work into these routes and compare then and/or

    B) have the map up with my route on it to navigate.

    Are these features coming?

  • @Elle I've a bike hammerhead due for delivery in Jan (as an early investor) - the hammerhead dev team state that it will work with Strava. Unless Strava can navigate a route on a smartphone I don't see how this is going to work without this feature?

  • @Elle, @Ashley - I'd like to be able to share my routes with my followers, so that they can be socialized when we are planning rides.  This could be web only, but it would be awesome if it were available on mobile too.  Even if we're not able to use them, it would still be nice to view them.

  • Clive - best to reach out directly to our support team so we can track down that answer - I don't know Strava's plans regarding the Hammerhead development.

We do have some sharing options for Routes currently - You can share with Strava friends, Facebook, Twitter, and via email.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Hi - I just read Elle's comment:    "There is no current timeline for Strava Routes to be available on our mobile app, but it's something we're hoping to provide someday! "

My whole reason for looking at this app is so that I can pre-plan a route and then export it to my iPhone.  It doesnt sound like they are in a hurry to implement this though.   What are the alternatives for an iPhone ? What is MMR - I thought it was a vaccine!!

  • Mik, i this particular instance.... MMR stands for Map My Ride, one of Strava's main competitors...

  • This is someting definitely missing on Strava. This keeps me away from being a premium member...

  • I find it disappointing to not have this feature. It makes it much more difficult to find new routes.

It would be great if we'd be able to see the outline of the route in the Maps section, where the route you've ridden so far is also shown. In my opinion this should not be a difficult feature to implement. Nevertheless, this would make the app so much better.

  • I am astonished that this feature is absent.  Strava == useless to me.

  • I agree - I use Strava for everything apart from following routes on my iPhone, where I have to switch to MMR. Would be great to have it all in one place. Given that the map on the Strava app on the iPhone updates your own position, it doesn't sound too hard to overlay a route onto the map.

  • Thanks for the feedback! We are currently working on bringing Strava Routes to our mobile apps, which may include a feature for this, or a feature like this for navigating a route from your mobile phone. Stay tuned!
