Add support for ANT+ with Strava Android App

Has anyone tried using an ANT USB adaptor (such as the one Garmin sells) to receive ANT sensors on an Android phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (4.2). It seems that if I install the ANT Radio Service and the ANT USB Service (both free from the Google Play store) I might be able to get ANT to work with my phone and hopefully the Strava app.  The description for the ANT Radio Service app lists compatible apps but Strava is not listed

  • I now use ipbike which negates attaching things to my Galaxy S5. Just a shame I have to do this. But it works with only the occasional glitch.

  • I have been on this thread for about a year now and get daily emails from this Strava thread that yet another person has posted their disgust with Strava for not implementing ant+.  This weekend I had yet another confrontation with Bluetooth Smart and trying my darnest to get my Android (yes it has the Smart technology in it's current software package AND ant+) to get connect to a device. No way, no how.  My husband has the exact same phone (since I refuse to learn how to use a different one in the event he has an issue he cannot figure out) and guess what, it worked/connected with his, just ONCE.  Even after turning off all interference, restarting devices, etc., the Smart sensor refused to connect with my phone and his after the one time. Talk about frustrating.  Why in the world would a company, especially as large as Strava, bank itself on ONE technology!?  It is absolutely infuriating, and another reason why I refuse to use Strava as my go to app.  Sure I have my data from another app linked in, but that's only for the social aspect for my friends who don't know better, otherwise I would drop Strava and it's Bluetooth Smart only technology like a rock into a deep, dark sea.  ANT+ is a proven technology and has proven itself over and over to me as steadily reliable.  Not once have I had a dropped or unfound communication, whereas Bluetooth Smart has only given me headaches (figuratively and literately).  Strava your hold out in believing the Bluetooth Smart is the ONLY technology is hurting a fan base and turning many away from you. Ant+ has proven to be more reliable, what about this do you NOT understand?! It's incredulous this stance you are making against it.  As an FYI I have convinced at least 10 others from downloading your app due to not implementing ANT+ and are now socially active with me on another app.  Get with the game and get over yourself; you are a business and businesses that only rely on one source are doomed to fail, especially when the next big thing comes out. Ugh!

  • A comparison between ANT+ and Bluetooth 4 LE:

    http://www.thisisant.com/developer/ant-plus/ant-ble-comparison#386_tab

Why would any app support Bluetooth 4 and not ANT+? It just doesn't make sense! I currently connect my HRM to both my Garmin watch and my phone (although not Strava unfortunately!). That isn't even possible with Bluetooth 4! It's a complete no-brainer for anyone who doesn't work for Strava. ANT even provide Dev's with all the SDK's and instructions on how to implement it! Crazy!!

  • Now why would Strava make their app more compatible with ANT+ and more hardware? it's only going to bring in more customers, and Strava doesn't want that, who wants more customers?? That's not what Strava is about, they don't want more business, "less is more" is obviously Strava's new credo....

    Crazy indeed...

  • Please support ANT+. Stop ignoring your customer base and besides in 2015 there's absolutely no excuse to deny this support unless Strava is been paid by some "forces" to force BLE into widespread adoption while hoping to kill off ANT+.

  • On issues like like the lack of ANT+ support and image uploads, the silence from Strava has disappointed me.

I am cancelling my premium membership tonight (8/14/2012 - 6/15/2015).

I hope Strava will start listening to their users!  :)

  • It probably wouldn't hurt to edit your ratings and reviews of the strava app on google play/amazon or itunes to reflect your displeasure with Strava's bizarre disinterest in Ant+

  • How it is a zombie thread! It's 2015 the year of the future!

But no ANT+ support yet. Why Strava?

Your direct competitors like garmin are adding social functions to bring back their customers.

Yet, you do not add ANT+ features to your app. More and more phones are adding ANT+, and Having Strava on board of ANT+ club will help

more phones equip ANT+ as a standard feature.

If you need to pay for ANT+ license, make it only available to premium members.

Please kill this zombie thread Strava! plz!

Let this thread rest in peace and be a legendary thread cyclist talk time to time.

  • Went back and gave the app a 1 rating. Then I went and cancelled my premium membership. I'm not sure Strava knows how people are using their product any more.

  • Brilliant idea from Robert Schultz! I'm heading over to Google Play store now to rate the app 1 star. If enough Android users downgrade the app ratings, maybe the megalomaniacs that run Strava will get off their high horse.

  • @Olukayode S

if you look 3 posts down, you'll see the original suggestion to lower your ratings and reviews.... I'm glad to see you liked the idea, hopefully everyone does it.

  • I downgraded my rating of the app from 5* to 1* about a year ago, solely because of this, and quite clearly said I would put it back up when they did support it. I'd like to see their average rating drop significantly, and then, just maybe, they will listen! Nothing else seems to work! Grrrr!

  • we can only hope there will be enough of us that lowers their rating to get their attention, but the fact is, they don't respond here, and considering this thread was started in 2012 and they still don't have it implemented even though its on more or less much EVERY phone out there etty much means that Strava really doesn't care about their customers needs or growing their business... really folks it's just a matter of time before another app picks up where Strava fails, and once they do, it will be too late fore strava.

It's kinda sad, so many of us are showing some real loyalty to this brand and they just could care less.... they don't deserve your hard earned money

  • I just lowered my ratings also, will be hard to beat 78.000 positive ratings.

Im currently getting familiar with ipbike, the app is very adjustable.

  • It will be hard to beat 78,000 ratings, but the good thing is, is that the latest reviews stay at the top, so anyone thinking of downloading Strava will see all the complaints, that is if everyone edits their reviews too :)

This thread is suddenly getting very popular

  • We could juggle a bit between 1 and 2 stars to stay on top of the revieuws  :-)

I got to this thread, because my current phone is supporting Ant+ now, i was very unpleasand surprised Strava is nog going with the technical developement of Android

  • I also added 1 star rating to Strava android app just for being non competitive in the sport apps market and not having ant+ support.

  • I just gave them one star. Ip bike might get wind of this and take on the positive parts of Strava. Imagine an app like Strava BUT that supports Ant+

  • The thing is, Strava is a community app and ipbike a technical one. A true shame Stava is not picking it up to beat all the apps, includng Garmin Fit.

  • And that's the main reason I've stuck around with Strava, but I firmly believe that eventually someone will discover Strava's shortcomings and laziness and fill that much needed gap with their own app or some existing company will improve their app to include similar features and of course ANT+ support... my.garmin.com is already showing some similar features thankfully but it's not quite there yet.

  • I mentioned this earlier, but I'll mention it again. Endomondo works great with ANT+ and is really easy to use as well as having a more customizable UI. If you want to sync back to Strava, just use tapiriik.com which will sync between several exercise apps with no account required.

  • I also went to my cycling group on Facebook and directed any Strava users who wanted integration to their phone to this enhancement request.

I had tried IPbike, and even though I'm a tech geek, I thought it was a bit complicated. I use Endomondo for the days I forget my Garmin.

What is truly stunning about this, is that it feels like the actions of a company that is on its last legs and just can't afford to do the innovation that will keep the customers coming back.

  • Thanks Tom: tapiriik.com and Endermundo will do the trick also, I recon

This weekend I will record a ride, en see if tapiriik throws it in the Stava pit. In that case I could deinstall the app

  • Haha, I got a mail:

Congratulations! As part of the Samsung Galaxy S5 campaign, you have been upgraded to Endomondo Premium for 12 months free of charge.

You will not be charged anything, unless you actively choose to prolong your Premium membership.

We hope you'll enjoy all the extra motivating features now available to you in the app and onendomondo.com.

    Goodby Strava!!!!!!!!!!!
