Add support for ANT+ with Strava Android App

Has anyone tried using an ANT USB adaptor (such as the one Garmin sells) to receive ANT sensors on an Android phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (4.2). It seems that if I install the ANT Radio Service and the ANT USB Service (both free from the Google Play store) I might be able to get ANT to work with my phone and hopefully the Strava app.  The description for the ANT Radio Service app lists compatible apps but Strava is not listed

  • Thanks Tom: tapiriik.com and Endermundo will do the trick also, I recon

This weekend I will record a ride, en see if tapiriik throws it in the Stava pit. In that case I could deinstall the app

  • Haha, I got a mail:

Congratulations! As part of the Samsung Galaxy S5 campaign, you have been upgraded to Endomondo Premium for 12 months free of charge.

You will not be charged anything, unless you actively choose to prolong your Premium membership.

We hope you'll enjoy all the extra motivating features now available to you in the app and onendomondo.com.

    Goodby Strava!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The ANTS+ go marching one by one, no premium
The ANTS+ go marching one by one, no premium
The ANTS+ go marching one by one,
The lack of ANT support is pretty dumb....

  • LMAO!! @Robert Schultz that was awesome Robert!! LOL

And funny you talk about Strava acting like a company on their last legs, i was actually just thinking the same thing, maybe they are indeed fading away, no innovation on their app any more, just the same old app... no communication with their customers in their forum... it would explain a lot...

  • Can't hurt to post on the Strava Facebook page either:

  • It's a good idea to pay to Facebook! Might be worth mentioning Android as well seeing as Strava have supported ANT+ (via dingle!) on iOS for years. It's only us that seem to be viewed by Strava as second class citizens and not worth their effort!!

  • You'll have to post in the comments of their posts.... It won't let you post direct to the wall...

    This was my effort

Can we have Ant+ for android yet please? Seems crazy you haven't even got this on your roadmap. You've got it for Iphone but that requires a dongle. Why does it not exist for android?

You've got an entire community of Android users, who have Garmin devices they want to sync with Strava and yet you choose to ignore them.

I love your app, but hate the stubborn approach when it comes to Ant+ & Android.

  • Good news everyone, the latest update to the android Wahoo fitness app adds support for ANT+ sensors. There's an easy one button sync to strava. And unlike endomondo, it won't drain your battery and does support power meters.

  • That's ironic.

The company that pretty much pioneered bluetooth fitness accessories now supports ANT+, and the company that built their business on Garmin GPS and accessories doesn't.

  • Have a new smartphone that support ANT+ but your software doesn't.

    Please add support for ANT+

  • ANT+ is available with Map My Ride

It is funny I came to Strava from there a while ago for the features, please add ANT+ in so I can stay

  • Just downgraded to free account. Comment, "Need Ant+ support for Android."

  • I've downgraded from the premium for that reason too!

and now I've bugs with uploading from other trackers:

files from endomondo do not import properly - double the pace half the time and all the KOMs are mine. Even if i use the "race" tag, like suggested by the support (it does help with time and pace) i still get all KOMs with that double pace - remember this bug, you can get a lot of LOLs trolling your local KOM hunters

automatic sync with garmin connect does not work with runs recorded with garmin-fit app - it imports only the last lap, and you can not turn off kilometer autolap in garmin-fit app. You still can manually upload data from garmin connect, it works, but the garmin-fit app has a nasty bug itself - shows incorrect heart average on any run except the first one.

I hope that wahoo app will give me a chance to export files to strava, but i'm starting to think already, should i ever bother?

  • my mistake - it does not count for segments and KOMs, when you import from endomondo. sorry, didn't doublecheck

  • Bad decision.  Weak excuse. Good luck with your "we know better than the customer does" business model.

Oh, and going out and spending a bunch of money on BTLE when I have perfectly good ANT+ equipment, is NOT upgrading.  It's throwing money away, on a less well supported protocol.

  • Perhaps the Strava developers could get in touch with the developer of IpBike. The reviews for that app clearly show that your concerns are misplaced.

It sounds like they are claiming that the iPhone 3rd party ANT+ support is more reliable -- is there any evidence at all to back that up, or is it just spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt)?

  • @ Elle: Your comment shows the lack of interest the Strava team has towards the customers. I use Strava only for the community and nothing else!  I will NEVER upgrade to preminum, and will surely NOT downgrade to the rubbish BT accessories. In fact, I decide what to buy, and won't let Strava do that for me

  • Yes, we all know just how sorry Strava is. BTLE is an upgrade? In what alternate screwed up universe? If Strava has issues with the reliability and consistency of data collection via ANT+ that is a reflection of the incompetence of the Strava tech team and is just more of the BTLE kool-aide, what a load of arrogant BS. Upgrade???

Elle, it would be more honest if Strava were to simply withdraw all support for Android and tell the Android community to just use ipbike or some other app. BTW ipbike handles both ANT+ and BTLE, shows what can be done if you know what you are doing and don't have your head stuck where the sun don't shine. And be honest about why you are trying to force BTLE down our throats, come clean on the deal.

The progressive elitists at Strava are just making it clear that they know what is best for the sheeple, that the sheeple are just not sophisticated enough to understand what is good for them. ANT+ is bourgeois, certainly not beneficial to Strava's cronies, and stands as a capitalist individualist commodity fetish barrier to the utopia that the BTLE collective surely will bring. ANT+ exploits the masses with a false sense of freedom and choice, whereas BTLE is the true choice, the freedom of conformity to the collective.

  • Wow Elle, you're pretty much admitting that Strava is simply just too lazy to implement Ant+?  And i can't believe you actually offered us such an incredibly weak and insulting excuse:

"we also have concerns about the reliability and consistency when recording data from ANT+ accessories on Android. We feel it's complicated to support all the hardware and accessory options for a quality recording experience. "

if you expect us to believe that Ant+ is too "complicated" and unreliable for strava to implement then you guys are pretty much admitting that your developers suck and are incapable of implementing a very simple code into your program. Unreliable? if it was so unreliable then why is EVERYONE but strava using it? you can't possibly expect us loyal or once loyal customers to believe that tripe. How insulting.. Considering ALL of your competitors use ANT+, yet for some reason Strava  can't? I guess you believe that we are all so uneducated that you can spew out anything about how "complicated" it is to support and expect us to nod and believe you. A child could implement this in your code, which begs the question , what kind of low quality programmers do you have working for Strava?

And i also assume that Strava believes that the only people who want ANT+ support are already here in this forum, and that's a huge mistake, as we are merely a fraction, we are the small fraction that cares enough to actually write about our concerns in your forum.... The rest just move onto another app that has ANT+support.

The truth is, is Strava's priorities are with building their community features and refuse to be progressive with their compatibility with newer better tech.... this is a poor business decision as it cuts off many potential customers, which is odd that a business that is first and foremost in business to make money has decided to turn their back on more revenue, eventually another business will enter that will offer the same but more than Strava, picking up where strava leaves off and that'll be the beginning of the end for strava. Businesses only survive when they can progressive and  are able to foresee and accommodate their customers needs, when that is ignored, the business dies a little, by little and gives the opportunity to another business. Not a very intelligent business model for Stava...

  • Eh, this is the expected reaction really. Everyone, if you're at all invested in ANT+ hardware, just vote with your feet, as Strava just doesn't have a killer feature that raises it above the others. There are soooo many other apps out there now, some with cooler features and interfaces.

  • Elle, what a HUGE fail on Strava's part! "Upgrade to BTLE" are you kidding me?! As far as I am concerned, and others as well, that is considered a downgrade. ANT+ is proven technology. Do you know that most of your competitors have actually implemented away from BTLE because of the high demand for use of a technology that most people ALREADY HAVE. Your suggestion to upgrade just goes to show Strava must be getting kickbacks from an unknown source. Why not be transparent and just tell us annoying ANT+ crowd so we can move on our merry way to your competitors that actually VALUE their customers.
Do you even understand that awesome products, like the Wahoo Kickr implemented ANT+ so they could secure more fan base? But no! Strava was once a great app and degraded themselves to "do it my way or hit the highway." Kind of sounds like someone has their hands in a dirty pocket somewhere. Well, you spoke & you could care less. Bravo, you just demoted yourself you a failing grade. I will dissuade others from using your app. And guess what, I bet if enough of us complain, you could lose accounts like Iceman Cometh that advertise you all over. Boycott!

  • My guess is that "Elle" is probably not even a real person but more of an online customer service persona, yet another indication of how much strava truly values it's customers and their needs.

  • LOL, Somehow i don't think you or your masters really care online persona "Elle"...  in almost 3 years of this thread you've joined this conversation twice, both pretty much stating the same robotic things..., Strava fails to give android users the same respect as iOS, and they pretty much have said in your 2 obstinate reply's, you made it clear that strava is disinterested in their customers needs, and that they actually had the audacity to tell us to look elsewhere! pretty much saying you don't want our business... what business does that??? that's just madness...

If you are really sincere about being able to help, and you want to do something, why not pass these requests and concerns to a person that REALLY matters in your corporation? Maybe they need to be made aware that ANT+ is a strongly desired feature by all android users.  If you are really "Elle" and not a online persona, and you do sincerely care, how about getting this thread to someone above your director, someone who actually cares about the success of this business.

  • Elle, it sure would be nice to know what is driving this decision. Certainly the reasons offered don't give the user community any sense that our requests are being taken seriously.

Strava isn't investing in the features that I find useful (IM, ANT+ and anything other than Instagram). Seems everything is related to training, and that isn't why I'm here.I've already cancelled my premium - but since it takes time, Strava won't see any drop-off in numbers yet.

  • So, if Elle is an online persona :-), then maybe we should be talking to someone else.

A quick look at https://www.strava.com/about shows me that Aaron Forth is their Chief Product Officer. https://www.strava.com/athletes/4722
Maybe we should all start commenting on his rides :-)

  • @Elle you say that you wish there was more that you could do.  Help us to understand what you have done so far.  Have you passed on the links that people have shared?  Have you advocated strongly for this segment of your customer base?  Have you told your product managers that premium members are cancelling their subscriptions over this issue and that potential premium members are making the decision not to buy?  Frankly, it doesn't feel to me, nor from the sounds of the response to your latest repetition of the same old line to anyone else, like we have anyone at Strava who is advocating on our behalf.

Here is our problem.  We like Strava.  We want to use Strava. Your insistence on supporting only BTLE means we can't without investing more than we already have in sensors.  BTLE is actually the less reliable, more problematic protocol.  This is well known and not a point that is open to serious debate.  You have to realize that you are talking to an extremely tech savvy crowd, and trying to tell us otherwise is just going to come off as disingenuous.  And for you to (did you actually write this with a straight face?) suggest that we use workarounds, while your developers implement Instagram integration is a slap in the face.  I'll bet no one canceled their subscription to convince you to implement that.

I won't be commenting on your Chief Product Officer's rides, because that doesn't feel like the right forum, but I do think that I'll collect your responses and send them, along with a link to this thread, to Cycling News, Bike Radar and maybe a few other news sources.
