Manually add Distance for an Indoor/Stationary Activity

When uploading indoor activities like indoor cycling or treadmill, no distance appears. Only HR. Would be useful to activate a field in wich we can type in the distance

  • Need to edit mine for the opposite reason: for strength training, only the heart rate matters. The distance is completely wrong, and should be zero.

  • I need to enter/edit my Roller session data.  HR alone is not adequate.  Mapmyride is better.

  • Yes it is annoying and Strava support does not seem care much about this. I have hundreds of workouts from Polar which I have migrated to Strava but most of them omit the mileage so I will also cancel my premium account in 3 months from now when is due to renewal. Simples as that

  • +1 from me.

I looked at the files from Wahoo Fitness and an actual Strava track, it would seem that someone with coding chops could figure out how to spoof the Wahoo file to add fake lat/long to get to the needed distance. Maybe someone out there wants to code a small app for the community?

  • OK, so there is a workaround for that issues, at least if your are able to export your activity to e.g. tcx file. Open the file and edit the following XML tags:

    • <TotalTimeSeconds/> ... if you need to enter or correct activity's time
    • <DistanceMeters/> ... obvious (be aware that at least in my region I have this field in meters)
    • <MaximumSpeed/>
    • <Calories> ... given as kcal

And now the most important part. If you want distance to be visible in strava, you need also to find the last <Trackpoint> and edit there <DistanceMeters> again, giving the same (maximum) value as at the file's beginning. Now remove your previous activity from Strava (if it has been already synced from e.g. Garmin Connect) and perform manual activity upload from file. Missing total distance will be visible.

    Cheers!

  • I'm posting here what I posted to another thread I've been following that is related:

    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/26316440-Edit-Distance-for-an-Activity?page=1#post_42750258

I have been following this other thread for nearly a year now, with no response whatsoever from Strava, so it is pretty clear it is just a dead issue. Strava clearly isn't interested in adding this, nor are they interested in addressing the people who have this need or concern. As I already stated a while ago, I canceled my premium subscription primarily for this reason, because it renders all stationary bike and treadmill running that I do unable to be tracked accurately. The only reason that makes any sense why Strava would prevent editing is to preserve what they feel is the accuracy of segment leaderboards. Aside from the fact that this is easily solvable (don't allow edited distances to be eligible for leaderboard rankings), and the fact that the real need here is personal tracking, not the social aspect, I was reminded again the other day while riding how absurd this concern is, and how inaccurate the leaderboards actually are.

I live in AZ where it is hot, during the summers you need to be off the bike at the latest by 9-10AM in the morning. So I typically ride early...5AM, and I ride alone. The high desert in the Phoenix area gets high gusting winds, which make even flat rides frequently challenging, as I rarely get a wind-free ride, and often times even though riding a loop, because of the swirling wind currents due to gaps between scattered mountains I'll get a headwind or crosswind the entire route. As it has finally started cooling a little in the mornings, I got out later than normal a few days ago, and I was able to hook up with a few other riders, and trade pulls for part of my ride. Was that ever an eye-opener. It has been a long time since I've ridden in a pace line and traded pulls, and here's what became immediately obvious: my segments were 3-5 mph faster while at the same time running my heart rate about 10 bpm lower and power output ~50 watts lower when I was able to trade pulls. Now everyone knows that riding with a team / pace line is faster, but I had never even considered it with respect to Strava's leaderboards and this issue of editing distances. To prevent people from accurately tracking their own personal exercise for the sake of preserving leaderboard accuracy is pretty ridiculous. Aside from the several ways you can just fabricate ride data to own those leaderboards if you wanted, even the legit data from cycling computers doesn't really lend itself to accurate leaderboards. Those leaderboards present times / speeds as those achieved by individuals only -- but it doesn't differentiate individual efforts vs. some guy getting pulled by 10 other people in a pace line -- BIG difference. Would I expect Strava to differentiate? No. But using leaderboard accuracy as a reason for not allowing people to edit their distances for their own tracking purposes is ridiculous. The leaderboards AREN'T necessarily accurate.

  • Just tried Strava after years on Endomondo. This editing issue came as a surprise to me. Not being able to edit indoor distances is a no go for me. I'll head back to Endomondo. If this issue is solved I might reconsider; segments are still a bit tempting.

  • They have lost/will lose lots of premium members due to this issue alone.

  • Spent several minutes trying to find this feature thinking "this is a basic feature, I must just not be seeing the obvious way to do this" WRONG. Dear Strava, this appears to be an issue for many, many people, for approximately a whole year. As a software guy, I cannot fathom a feature request this watched/requested just sitting around for this long. I want to echo several of the other posters in that this definitely makes me want to not sign up for a premium membership (why pay for the extra features when the basics aren't there?). At this point I'm pretty close to just keeping all my workouts in Garmin Connect, forget Strava if I can't properly track my workout distances.
For me this is the second very basic fix I've seen Strava take forever to fix, this is strike two Strava, I really like you guys, so please fix this!

  • No point in waiting for this simple function to be added, lots of other things are irritating on Strava, their maps, the way they count mileage, segment records, the fake Kom's, the premium functions are nearly useless to say the least...but yes the social aspect is a little bit cool, just because most people cycling are here otherwise it would be just one more boring workout app. For any serious records, workouts, miles, bike mileage tracking, statistics, odometers and such I still rely on Garmin Connect and Golden Cheetah. My Premium subscription will expire soon and forever.

  • Responding to Pierre Colin about our indoor training 'choice' -- either HR w/o distance stats or a manual entry including distance w/o HR stats. Like so many others, I've been frustrated by this disfunction as well. So recently I've begun to do both: Upload my HR stats from my cycling workout (sans distance) plus add a manual entry from my workout that records the distance. So my yearly totals now include my overall distance. The only category out of sync now is the number of training workouts. The number of my indoor workouts is now artificially doubled. Not my preferred solution, but Strava has left those wishing to record overall distance with no other option. I also agree that it's time for Strava to respond to customer discontent or lose more premium subscribers.

  • I'm having the same issue - with winter indoor training at the gym, there's no way to track both distance and heart rate for a work out.  Strava, this is ridiculous and an easy fix!

  • It could be a Zwift issue for why they don't add this, at least for rides.  It would be appreciated if Strava responded, other than the boiler plate, 'it's in the cue'.

  • This needs to be adressed and fixed.

I don't care about challenges, personal records or any other related issues, just give me the ability to log my indoor training with HR profile and distance.

Seriously considering dropping Strava altogether. Any news?

  • c'mon guys, it can't be that hard!! just make it so that if it senses the GPS is off, you can manually adjust the mileage!! No KOM issues or anything!!

  • This was requested in 2014 and still no edit? Here is another scenario - I just ran to the gym then ran on a treadmill. Strava (via Garmin Connect) thinks I ran 0.7 km. Garmin lets me correct the distance, why not Strava?

  • Strava claims that they don't want to impact challenges and leaderboards with manually entered distance, which doesn't seem possible as those feed off GPS.  I'm going to start adding manual entries for indoor run/ride distance to compliment the HR loaded activity, however I'm going to set the time for these at 1 second. I track distance, HR and time, so setting the manual entry at 1 second will not meaningfully impact that metric. The number of indoor activities going forward will hence forth be doubled, but I can live with that until Strava deems this worthy of being added.

  • I was also in the process of switching from Training Peaks, but if this issue has been ignored for 2 years I doubt I will.

Do people care about winning challenges that much that they would cheat on their training log? I don't see it.

  • Never had an issue with strava before. Winter + buying my first HR monitor changed that. Sounds like this won't be addressed anytime soon.
